GPD Investigating "Serious Incident" @Athena

The D&C reports: Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan "acknowledged that an investigation was underway, and confirmed that the allegations involve three Athena students, all younger than 16, who were accused of prompting a special needs student to pull down his pants, grab his crotch and drink urine from a toilet. The students are accused of recording the activity and posting it on Snapchat."

The district later issued a statement, which reads:
"Today, the Greece Central School District was made aware of allegations about a serious incident at Athena High School that involved juvenile students and was reportedly captured on video. According to Director of Security Steve Chatterton, an internal investigation was started immediately and Greece Police were called in to determine whether a crime had been committed. The investigation is ongoing.

"Superintendent Barbara Deane-Williams said the allegations are very disturbing. Appropriate discipline will be administered once all of the facts are obtained and the police have completed their investigation."

From a Facebook friend:
Vic Simonetti SimondaGrump .Yet another story of abuse to a developmentally disabled child in a Greece school. This district is more interested in sports than it is in children especially those that are in Special Education classes. They spend money on everything except learning. Greece residents your district is becoming yet another failure to it's students just like the City. Juveniles or not , strict punishment for those responsible is called for but we know that won't happen due to unmitigated circumstances that most likely will be blamed on the victim . I knew this district was in trouble but this is the icing on the cake. Failure to educate by the board should be punishable by law..If one were to incorporate the city and Greece school boards ,we still couldn't come up with 1 accountable school board. Again the students pay the price for their incompetence.

I heard a rumor that the boys involved in this incident are the same kids involved in the bus monitor fiasco. Can anyone verify that? Just curious.
I feel so bad for the poor kid this happened to, and I sympathize with his parents, knowing they will get NO support from the superintendent.

No need to worry. Steve Chatterton is taking care of this. LOL

To 9:47AM ~~ That wouldn't be a big surprise to me.

It seems very odd that the cops "are investigating" still. I thought bullying, coercion and assault were all covered under laws & district policies.

To 10:39AM ~~ Yup. Isn't it great how he has kept all of the REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS out of our schools? As I said before, we never had a problem with them in the first place! It's the sex offenders we haven't caught yet (like the TA @Olympia) that worry me.

There is absolutely no need for community concern about this incident. My staff is looking into computer programs that will prevent disabled students from drinking from toilets. The Sports Disterict may soon spend a ton of tax $ to install automatic flushers, or we may get another computer program to teach proper toilet use.

Failing to teach proper toilet use is a parental failure, not a District failure. Vote yes on my Babsie Bowl and get your heads out of the District's toilet bowls. Don't you people spend sufficient time looking into your own bowls between flu and drinking?

Who among us has not hurled into the porcelain godess? It's only a little pee, and my Science Department Head assures me there isn't a single drop of water on Earth somebody didn't pee already.
Vote yes on Babsie Bowl and make the pee problem go away.

BD-W this week
The media love me.
I am the greatest!

2 of the 3 students involved were in the bus monitor video also.

Regardless of what they media says Bullying is NOT a crime. The others you listed are crimes but I am betting only Harassment fits the bill. But again the age of kids also make applying the laws difficult at times. This will probably end up in family court and nothing will come of it. NY wants to raise the age of someone being criminally responsible to 18 from 16, I guess the liberal want these kids uncontrolled and unpunished for two more years ! The state needs a complete overhaul of the juvenile justice system. These kids are awful and learned nothing from bus incident which also falls back on parents! My child is no angel but he would never do this especially twice.

To 2:35PM ~~ Certainly looks like they learned their lessons spending a couple of months at the Alcott Rd. facility!

To 2:39PM ~~ I said: "I thought bullying, coercion and assault were all covered under laws & district policies." Do you selectively read all of the time??

This incident proves that GCSD policies are ineffective, that programs to rehabilitate offenders FAIL, and that pouring money into such efforts victimizes taxpayers who want to believe (naively) that doing SOMETHING within a system where the employees are ill-equipped to handle such situations will help improve things. It doesn't.

Chatterton can only do what the administration will let him do. If you don't believe that, ask a couple of retired Greece Police officers who left that job for that reason. While your at it , ask a couple of former Sheriff deputies who quit for the same reason One of them was a former Jail deputy that during his entire career, he never was assaulted by an inmate. As he put it, I had to come here to get assaulted by an INMATE who broke my arm the first week on the job.
I've said this a million times before, until this district grows a set of gonads in the form of male teachers and administrators, this motherly approach by the those in charge will, plague this district forever
The latest percentages, 97% female the balance go figure ratio o f male to female teachers and administrators . No way to run a rail road let alone our current urban suburban school district

To 3:32PM ~~ While I get what you're saying, you must also recall that Chatterton CAN INFLUENCE how things are done by suggesting approaches based upon a law enforcement perspective & background. Isn't his considerable experience in that arena supposed to be WHY he was hired in the first place?

Steve Chatterton says that "GPD had to be called to see if a crime had been committed"??? Yeah really that sounds like crap from a former ranking police officer who should have known immediately if the allegations rose to the level of a crime!!! Why was he hired if he can't tell the difference between a violation, misdemeanor, or FELONY? Unless as previously posted by another observant SCAT's blogger, his position was created to subvert investigations, hide the truth of what's happening in our schools, and clean up the stink on our School Board, like his unsuccessful predecessor, rather that make our children safe?! Maybe that's why Nelms resigned?

To 5:35PM ~~ What do you expect from someone who sat by & watched Rahn destroy GPD?? Chatterton was there!

Predictably, the Greece School District's efforts to keep employees & students off social media in the wake of the latest scandal has failed!

In the last 24 hrs. we've experienced near record numbers of visits to both the BLOG & Facebook posts concerning the sexual abuse at Athena HS. The last time we saw this much traffic in such a condensed period of time was when Karen Klein had her 5 minutes of fame ... now extended to 6 minutes thanks to the animals at Athena HS.

Investigate? That's laughable. Phelan promoted an incompetent investigator to head the division only because his father Boy Wonder's father was head of Brighton PD. It's so dare I use this word, incestuous.

T Anonymous @ 2:39 pm on 3/12, You hit the nail on the head !!. I am a parent of one that had his share of young and dumb decisions and troubles. Love him to death, but always held him accountable for his actions. We didn't make excuses for his behavior, we did and continue to do things the old fashioned way. People need to hold kids accountable, don't say its okay or oh, well, kids will be kids. Parents need to evaluate the actions, some are minor and some show underlying issues. Sure they will do dumb things, but when it gets to this point, thats not a dumb mistake what these boys did, it was downright cruel and inhumane. Big difference between treating another human being like that and having too much testosterone raging thru the body and not having the frontal lobe connected full yet. BIG DIFFERENCE !!. Unfortunately people call for harsh criminal charges, but yet we have idiots out there who feel the age should be raised and many should go to family court instead where their hands are slapped and its a joke. What should be done ? Who knows. I'm not a perfect parent by any means and never encountered something like this with my kids. Lack of empathy and conscience for sure. The real sad part is that possibly 2 of the boys who did this didn't learn from the first time. Those boys need help. Anger issues ? maybe they are belittled at home and feel to do the same to others to make themselves feel/look better ? Only a professional can figure that out, but get them rewired before they get older because in a few years those boys will be unleashed into society and workplace. While some parents who feel this is not a big deal, well they will regret that laid back position when their son gets killed or his a** kicked really bad or ends up in prison on felony charges and gets a taste of what they did when young but by someone much more dangerous as a cellmate. Some families are blessed with perfect kids, some have those who test the system but it all works out if he/she has parents who drill in their heads that its not acceptable and holds them accountable for actions. For those who blow off the rules of society, well, those kids give job security to corrections officers. Id rather punish my kid now and kick them in the a** and have them say i hate you, than taking a visit to see them at Five Points Corrections or Attica in a few years.

MUST BE THESE TYPES ARE INCOMPETENT AS THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES HURT AS SECURITY GUARDS. DOESN'T HAPPEN TO NON PD GUARDS OR IN OTHER DISTRICTS!!!

I WONDER IF IT WAS A 12 YEAR OLD 6TH GRADE GIRL THAT BROKE HIS ARM???

OR WAS IT FICTION AND A BRIBED PD DOCTOR WHO HELPED HIM MILK A LONG TERM VACATION - LIKE SO MANY OTHER BROTHERS?

To 5:41PM ~~ District employees write to this BLOG claiming they suffer ABUSE while at work in GCSD buildings. Makes me question WTH is in charge?? Doesn't seem to be the adults!!

Bad or no parenting is a problem with a lot of kids nowadays. When I was young if I screwed up my neighbor smacked me dragged me home then my mom let me have it. She was a little woman but we all feared her. Now people want to call the cops when anyone even yells at their kids. Spare the rod Spoil the child. Never when I was young did you see ANY child swearing at their parent or telling them to shut up. On a side note these kids should get in trouble just for being so dumb! Didn't social media get them caught last time and then they post this. Obviously they are not the smartest kids in the world!

On a different note, does anyone know or heard anything more about the female teacher/whatever she is, that was having relationships with male students @ Olympia? Or has that all been forgotten due to all the Athena crap? I saw it on the news for a min, then nothing more.

To 3:03PM ~~ I almost didn't post your comment since it sounds like a personal beef between you and the previous poster. TAKE IT UP ELSEWHERE.

To 3:28PM ~~ The teacher's aide no longer works for GCSD. She resigned and was charged with rape and a criminal sex act. Last we heard, she was out on bail. I think it's in the hands of the courts at this point.

@SCATS thats the part ive heard about the Olympia TA. I know she had to go back to court, kinda strange that chan 10 i think it was just ended it at that. I found it to be very serious. I know youre no lawyer or anything like that, but i really hope this women pays for what shes done. Any ideas on what kind of punishment she might get. Ive also read comments on social media and the double standard is insane. I hope she gets the same kind of punishment that any male would. thoughts??

To 6:26PM ~~ In reality, most cases that end up with arrests in Greece-related news also "end" as far as media coverage around here. A wonderful example is the case of Manza who was shot by GPD while sleeping in his home. Since our jails are overflowing with criminals, many of whom are much more dangerous than this TA, I suspect she might plea bargain her way down to minimal time in jail, if any. I don't mean to minimize her crime but compared to many violent offenders, her crime probably doesn't cause the justice system to consider her to be as much of a risk to the larger community as many already housed behind bars.

Have you tried calling Ch 10 and asking them for an update? Maybe they would have something more to share ... ? Then again, maybe her next court date isn't for several weeks or months.
