GCSD Drags Feet On Bus Safety

Strange quotes from today's D&C:

"The driver has been temporarily assigned to another route amid district concern with inappropriate student social media commentary about her," school district spokeswoman Laurel Heiden said in an email Friday. "The (bus) attendant has also been temporarily removed."

SCATS ~~ So then, this was NOT related to ANY disciplinary action, like the district might have us believe? AMAZING!!!

"The video shows the man never interacting with students nor any students acting in a way that raises questions about his presence on the bus, Chatterton said."

SCATS ~~ So then, it is up to the students to provide surveillance for their own safety while on a Greece bus?? UNREAL!!!

"Unquestionably odd, the incident is being reviewed to see whether it's so worrisome that more stringent policies are needed or so isolated that it simply boils down to the driver's mistake when the man boarded."

SCATS ~~ So then, by tagging it as "unquestionably odd" and possibly "isolated", we've diverted attention AWAY FROM THE DUTIES OF THE DRIVER & MONITOR, and placed it on the behavior of the perp, who later showed he is just another nutcase with a violent temper !

HOW CAN ANYONE QUESTION WHETHER OR NOT THIS INCIDENT WAS "WORRISOME" WHEN WE KNOW WHAT HE DID TO A TODDLER & HIS WOMAN AFTER HIS RIDE TO ARCADIA?

IT IS WORRISOME !!

IT IS ODD!!

IT IS A BULLET DODGED ...

this time!!!

I just read a story on a local news website. A student on that bus talked with the bus driver the next day (I think it was the next day) about the incident and the conversation was recorded on a students cell phone. The driver seemed to think she knew who this guy was, a student who took the bus previously, and blamed it on the hoodie.

To 4:08PM ~~ SOLUTION: Ask him to pull off the hoodie! WTH is our BOE & Supt? Why no emergency meetings to get policy straight on this issue and to ensure safety protocol is followed by all? Oh that's right, they are too busy getting the sports boosters primed for Tuesday's vote.

This was posted on a different thread, but is worthwhile to repost here:

I am so sick of these "Bus drivers" who post that we should walk in their shoes" I AM A SCHOOL BUS DRIVER" when those kids board our bus they are in YOUR custody legally, it is part of your JOB to look out for them, when it is dark out and you pull up to a stop the kids can only get on one at a time and come up the stairs if I am suspicious I TURN THE FRONT DOME LIGHT ON if one is hiding their face I say STOP Show your face , and if they don't seem familiar or HAVE A BEARD! you call in with their ID # (which every student has memorized) I know it can be an inconvenience but once your kids on that run learn that that's how you run your bus , by the 2nd month they know how to board the bus , its not about getting your run done early or making it for your layover its about doing your JOB and making sure your kids are safe and someone doesn't get on that shouldn't be there. The last thing in the world you should do is take a possibly dangerous stranger onto school property!!!!!!!!!! you arrange 911 to meet you somewhere or security at the school if there is doubt about identity Does someone have to Die in the GCSD system before they pull they heads out of their butts and start having consequences for students who are violent and abusive and disrespectful and for employees who can barely walk to their bus and who don't do what they should be doing once thy are on it! it is like 2012 all over again she said " I tried to ignore it " and the public made her rich. instead of the district saying she didn't do her job properly they just kept quiet.

To 2:54PM ~~ We seldom post such drivel. It's fascinating that nearly every time we have a MAJOR SCANDAL, someone pipes up with "focus on the positive" then tells us about some sports-related activity we should promote. We're waiting for the day when Greece Central has SOMETHING other than sports to be proud of ... graduation rates, test scores, student GPA's and related are NEVER in the media for being where they ought to be. It's a HUGE problem. Sports just dilutes it.

I absolutely 100% agree. The hoodie/it was dark excuse is ridiculous.
My kids don't take the bus, I drive them. From what I've seen, the bus drivers and monitors spend a lot of time socializing with each other. I'm not trying to generalize, and I'm sure there are some who do take their job seriously, but this young adult getting past not only the driver but the monitor as well? Unacceptable.

7:18 said ''their ID # (which every student has memorized)''

In what world do you live?? I'll bet my yearly salary that 50% of the kids have no clue what there ID# is and couldn't produce an ID card if their life depended on it. So this is not as simple a solution as you are thinking it is. and, yes, I am also a school bus driver.

To 1:30PM ~~ In our efforts to prepare these kids for the REAL WORLD (which DO claims they are doing!), making them learn the ID number, OR show the ID to the driver (preferred) is THEIR CHOICE ... IF THEY WANT TO RIDE the damn bus! Let the BOE make it a policy.

Facts here are:

1.) Driver was wrong... No excuse!
2.) Monitor was wrong... No excuse!
3.) Attempt by DO to make it look otherwise is wrong... No excuse!
4.) There are plenty of solutions posted here... Any attempt by DO to do otherwise than adopt is wrong... No excuse!
5.) SO SOLUTION IS ALL STAFF AND STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR ISSUED ID AT ALL TIMES ON SCHOOL PROPERTY. NO EXCUSES!!!

To 4:51PM ~~ Kudos!! Great post!

And yes Anonymous, everyone else does it wrong except you! I guess that you think you are perfect, well guess what...your not! Unfortunately mistakes are made, we are only human. Must be that you have never experienced being assaulted by a parent, verbally and sometimes physically abused by a student, because you run a perfect bus. Here is a solution - no more hoodies allowed on school property, no cell phones allowed on school property and ALL students have to wear their school ID's while on school property. No school ID, No bus ride! And don't be throwing all the drivers under the "bus" because of one incident.

To 5:25PM ~~ There are "mistakes" ... and then there are potentially catastrophic lapses in good judgment! Letting this suspicious character onto the bus was the later.

I agree with your ideas about needed rules. Too bad our overpaid Security Director didn't think of them.

SCATS..that is the problem, the security director doesn't think. It must be the rule suggestions are at a level that he can not reach. But then again the district is placing people in positions they should not be in because all they are doing is creating turmoil. People in positions of authority should not be making remarks about employees such as "If they don't like it here they can leave". Well your right they can leave and go to other districts, who would be more then happy to hire them. One particular department would be devastated if say 80 or so employees just up and left. We are all suppose to be working as a team, not servants working for baby hitler.
