Police Have Holiday Inn Fire Suspect

Phelan would not identify the suspect in the case. “There’s identified investigative steps that have to be finished and that’s what they’re working on right now. And we hope to be able to do that relatively soon.”

Bud Phillips has REFUSED to be interviewed by police.

May 2011: “As the chief of the Ridge Road Fire District, I’m supportive of opening the investigation again. It’s been opened a couple times. I support them looking at it again, and as I did in 1978, I, as well as the department, will fully cooperate with them.” ~~ Bud Phillips

SCATS ~~ I guess "cooperation" has an expiration date!

Greece Police Honor License Plate Record Requests

According to today's D&C, records generated by Greece PD's use of license plate scanners can be obtained by the owner of the plate.

"Attorney Christopher Thomas of Nixon Peabody LLP told Justice John J. Ark on Tuesday morning that other law enforcement agencies — including the Greece Police Department — have readily handed over such information to people who asked for records on their own plates."

SCATS ~~ Everyone should make this request!

SCATS ~~ VERY INTERESTING!! Is Craigslist now an "official" school district publication?? The shown location appears to be from the old Barnard School!

Former Greece Cop Ponders Plea Deal

The case against former Greece Police officer, John Casey, who is accused of possessing child pornography, was adjourned in federal court.

Casey's attorney said he's considering a plea, but wants another 60 days to review the case with his client or the case will go to a federal grand jury.

Casey did not appear in court Friday. He lives in Iowa where he is under probation supervision.

Federal investigators during a two-year undercover federal investigation, they found several images of child pornography on computers traced to John Casey.

Casey was a former Greece police officer. He resigned in May. He was also previously employed with the Rochester Police Department.

On Friday, the judge approved Casey's travel request to visit family for the holidays. This case is scheduled to return to federal court January 27.

BOE Budget Goals Create Angst

1/3 of Greece BOE Votes Against
2% Tax Cap As A Budget Goal

O'Toole & VanOrman : "Because we've been so responsible in the past ..."
SCATS ~~ If the stated reason for the opposition isn't enough of a head-scratcher consider this: After protesting and voting against the suggested addition to the budget goals list of "Meeting the 2% tax cap"Julia found herself backed into a corner of her own creation. When the amended goal list was approved on a vote of 6 to 3, she mused over how this left her with the uncomfortable decision of potentially having to vote against the entire list of goals, because she opposed the tax cap goal. Thankfully BOE Prez. Sean McCabe rescued her by giving her a much needed potty break immediately following the vote. What relief!!

It is anticipated that the BOE will go into Exec. Session at 5:30PM to discuss the employment history of particular persons & collective negotiations pursuant to Article 14 of the Civil Service Law.

Holiday Inn Fire Remembrance Planned

A "Remembrance" for the
38th Anniversary of the arson
TEN (10) MURDERS is scheduled for 2PM on:

*****SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2014 ****

Location & details to be announced soon.

The purpose: To remember the 10 VICTIMS who were murdered at about 2 AM on Sunday, November 26, 1978. They were murdered while they innocently slept in their beds while guests at the Holiday Inn on Ridge Rd.

(The ruins from the fire were torn down shortly after. The Red Lobster restaurant is there now.)

CRITICAL to this is to show caring and support for the victims' families. Too many have been all but tortured by what law enforcement has and has NOT done from the time of the fire, and is still NOT DOING to this moment.

We need to show all branches of state AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT that they need to DO MORE TO END THIS.

HELP IS NEEDED!! If you can help, please contact me with your name & email address which I will forward to the organizers (I won't post it), until a committee is in place.

Meanwhile, progress continues toward getting PROPER legal actions.

SCATS ~~ Hold your breath about how this has been tagged as murder. Since it was deemed to be an ARSON, it was a crime, and it was intentional. Therefore, those who perished were in fact murdered. Besides, I'm just the messenger at this time.

GPD Charge Woman In Scheme To Defraud

13WHAM reports: "Vicki Umbrino, 46, was arrested on November 12 and charged with scheme to defraud in the 1st degree: a felony.

Police said she solicited money from victims promising "Around the Town" coupon books in return for a donation.

It is a legitimate school-related fundraiser, but police said many people never received the coupon books.

Umbrino profited from the scheme.

Umbrino was released with an appearance ticket."

SCATS ~~ I'll bet she "did it for the kids!"

Manza Case Going To Grand Jury

13WHAM reports:

Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said a grand jury will investigate whether police were justified in shooting 34 year old Thomas Manza in his home on Stone Road in Greece Sunday morning.

Doorley said the grand jury will also decide what charges Manza should face for allegedly pointing a loaded shotgun at officers when they entered his bedroom.

Manza's attorney questions why police entered the house. Matt Parrinello said there didn't appear to be any emergency and he said legally police should not have entered Manza's home.

But police tell 13WHAM News they went inside to check on Manza's welfare after trying for an hour to knock on his door and get his attention outside where his dogs were running loose.

Parrinello said right now Manza's family is most concerned about his condition. He was shot once in the stomach and is now in a medically-induced coma.

Parrinello told 13WHAM News, "Mr. Manza is in a coma so we don't have his version of things, we only have the police version."

However, Parrinello added, "That's going to be a big issue in this case - why were they inside his house?"

Parrinello said he thinks a separate agency should investigate the shooting. Doorley said her office is doing its own investigation and she is confident Greece Police did everything they were supposed to do when this shooting happened.

Manza legally owned two long guns, according to Parrinello. He used them for target shooting.

Owning those guns would be an issue if Manza was diagnosed with a mental illness. That would make it illegal under the SAFE Act for him to own guns.

But Parrinello said it's unclear whether there was an official diagnosis or not. Manza's family members told 13 WHAM News he did have mental health issues And was treated for them.

Police said Manza will be charged with menacing a police officer, which is a felony. Parrinello said that won't happen until Manza's condition improves and he is able to speak.

The sergeant who shot Manza, Jared Rene, is on administrative leave. Police Chief Pat Phelan said that is routine in cases like this.

Reilich Raises "Fees" ... Not "Taxes" ...

Tax rate to remain at $6.34 per $1,000 of assessed value

Lighting & drainage fees to rise

EVERYONE WILL PAY for retention pond upkeep

Lighting fees to increase by $.05 per $1,000 ($4.78 for a $100,000 home) so Greece can buy the streetlights from RG&E

The $56.6 million 2015 budget breakdown: about one- third of town spending goes for the Police Dept, about one- third for the Highway Dept. and the rest to courts, general govt, development & human services, the library and retiree benefits.

SCATS ~~ Reilich has been hanging out with Maggie a little too much. Raising "fees," not "taxes" is her claim to fame!

What GPD Knew

According to 13WHAM

Greece Police said they had the right to enter a house before an officer shot the resident.

Thomas Manza, 34, was shot inside a home on Stone Road on Sunday.

Police said animal control was called to the house after a report of loose dogs in the area.

Officers said they entered the house to check on the welfare of the resident; heard water running and noticed the stove was on.

Greece Police Chief Patrick Phalen said they found Manza lying naked on the ground with a shotgun beside him.

Phalen said they thought Manza was dead until he pointed a gun at the officers.

Officer Jared Rene fired his weapon, striking Manza.

Police said they responded at 10:58 a.m. and shots were fired at 11:56 a.m.

Chief Phalen said Officer Rene is on paid administrative leave while they investigate.

Phalen said they were called to this house in May for a similar issue.

Manza is in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Phalen said Manza will be charged with menacing in the first degree.

SCATS ~~ So they KNEW who lived there! I've also read that Manza has a history of some MINOR past offenses and of some mental health issues. It seems that GPD would know about that BEFORE entering his home.

Son Shot By Greece Police

13WHAM has spoken with a man who said his son was shot by Greece Police on Stone Road Sunday.

Anthony Manza said his 34-year-old son Thomas Manza was shot.

Police said animal control was called to a home on Stone Road after a report of loose dogs in the area. Police officers also responded and entered the home, which their officers said was open, to do a welfare check.

According to Greece Police, the officer said he saw a man with a gun. He fired his weapon, shooting the suspect.

They said the man was injured but is alive.

Anthony Manza said his son is critically injured. Police haven't released the suspect's name, but Mr. Manza said he wants answers.

"My boy's up there fighting for his life right now," Manza said. "He's in critical condition. He's got a hole in his chest...his whole chest is wide open, and I don't know if he's even going to make it.

"I want answers, and they're not giving me answers. They wouldn't even let me in to see my son at the hospital."

13WHAM reached out to Greece Police for comment about our interview with Mr. Manza, but have not heard back from them.

Police said the officer was not hurt, but no other details have been released.

SCATS ~~ My instincts are telling me we've got another scandal on our hands.

Officer-Involved Shooting In Home

 Anonymous said...

There was just (Sunday around noon) an officer-involved shooting in the town of Greece on Stone Rd. Scats, any info on that? (Sorry, to change the subject, wasn't sure how to start a new thread)      11/09/2014 12:23 PM

UPDATED ~~ According to the D&C ...

Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan said an officer, while inside 1677 Stone Road, shot a man who allegedly pointed a gun at police.

The shooting occurred Sunday morning after Greece police and animal control officers were called to Stone Road, near Stone Ridge Drive, for a report of dogs running loose in the area, just before 11 a.m.

Phelan said officers located the dogs, two pit bulls, and officers went to the home where they believed their owner lived and found an "unusual circumstance." Phelan said the house was open, water was running and a stove was on.

A man inside the home pointed a gun at one of of the officers and the officer shot the man, who was not identified by police, he said.

The man was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital. He is alive, but the extent of his injuries were not immediately known, Phelan said. Greece police are working to identify the man, noting that it was unclear if the injured man was a resident or the dog owner.

"All we know is that he was inside the house," Phelan said, adding that it remained unclear if anyone else was inside the home, a rental property.

Phelan said the officer was not physically hurt in the incident. The pit bulls were taken into custody.

A portion of Stone Road was closed to traffic for much of Sunday and is expected to remain closed into the night as police investigate, Phelan said.
SCATS ~~ Since when does Animal Control work Sundays ... ?

Number Of Scammed Grows In Greece School Fundraiser

According to 13WHAM News: "More victims have come forward in a coupon book scam.

The victims thought they were buying the "Around the Town" books for a fundraiser at Paddy Hill Elementary School in Greece.

"She's just so adorable, adorable, and that's what sold me on it," said Paul Schramm when asked about the young student who was with her parent selling the books back in September.

Schramm did not realize he was not going to receive the book until police showed up at his home this month. "I had no idea, I expected the books to come but it slipped my mind that they were not here yet."

According to Greece Central School District, Paddy Hill Elementary School did sell the coupon books for a fundraiser.

They sent us the following statement, "It is unfortunate that a school fund-raiser was used fraudulently. We rely on community support to make school fund-raisers successful and are thankful for the generosity of Greece residents. Anyone with questions about the validity of a fund-raising request should call the school's main office."

Greece police say this scam is related to a one we reported last month when people were receiving calls about a coupon book fundraiser selling "Around the Town" coupon books, benefiting the Holmes Road School in Greece.

Police say they do not believe either scam is still going on. Their investigation continues."

SCATS ~~ Please remember, Greece cop Sgt. Jared Renee recently told media that it is illegal to sell items door-to-door in Greece without a solicitor's permit and that this group of sellers does not have a permit. So, just ask those kiddies to show you their peddler's permits!

Greece School Decline Noticed

Letter To Editor (D&C)

Many older people in Greece must be very disappointed to learn that their once very good school system has deteriorated into mediocrity, and is now listed as 38th out of 67 school districts in Monroe and surrounding counties. What in the world has happened? I had expected to see some reaction from Greece citizens or the school district itself in the media, but I have not.
It is easy to speculate about reasons. Could it be students, parents, teachers, administration, government with its emphasis on the Common Core programs, or some combination of these? It would be informative and interesting to learn how the officials responsible for the Greece school district view this situation.

Vote Wisely ...

While walking down the street one day a Corrupt Senator was tragically hit by a car and died.
His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.
"Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you."
"No problem, just let me in," says the Senator..
"Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from the higher ups. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity."
"Really?, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven," says the Senator.
"I'm sorry, but we have our rules."
And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.
The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.
Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.

They played a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and the finest champagne.
Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who is having a good time dancing and telling jokes.
They are all having such a good time that before the Senator realizes it, it is time to go.
Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises...
The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens in heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him, "Now it's time to visit heaven.."
So, 24 hours passed with the Senator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.
"Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity."
The Senator reflects for a minute, then he answers: "Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell."
So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell..
Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above.
The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulders.
"I don't understand," stammers the Senator. "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?"
The devil smiles at him and says,

"Yesterday we were campaigning ...

Today, you voted..."
