"You're A Hypocrite" ...

"No, You're A Hypocrite!"

Susan Galloway & Bill Reilich Exchange Words At Town Board Meeting

For full disclosure, the author of this article, Susan Galloway, was one of the litigants against the Town of Greece in the SCOTUS case, Town of Greece vs Galloway and Stephens.

On Sept. 16, 2014, at the Greece Town Board meeting citizens spoke out about the new written prayer policy. Some of the criticisms of the policy were lack of transparency, the infuence outside organization on authoring legislation and policies, the lack of notification that the policy was being voted on at the town board meeting and lack of community involvement in creating the prayer policy.

After the citizen, Susan Galloway, addresses the Town Board during the public forum part of the meeting, the Greece Supervisor, Bill Relich, makes the comments, " The hypocrisy, we won the lawsuit. We are allowing Atheists to come and pray because they want us to be tolerant, but their not tolerant of Christians, their not tolerant of others, the hypocrisy".

Here is some back ground on the issues addressed in this video. On August 18, 2014, at the Greece Town Board meeting, the board passed a written prayer policy, which had no citizen input and was almost word for word from an outside organization, Alliance Defending Freedom. This organization is a fundamental Christian Organization that's website states, "We must continue the fight for religious liberty, so that the life-changing message of Jesus Christ can be proclaimed and transform our culture. Each win for the Body of Christ is a loss for the opposition. It’s that black and white." The written prayer policy adopted by the town of Greece, NY is almost word for word the ADF's model prayer policy minus a couple of lines. ADF represented the Town of Greece in the SCOTUS case Town of Greece vs Galloway and Stephens. They have also filed lawsuits on behalf of plaintiffs national and internationally against equal marriage for gays and lesbians, and women's reproductive freedom including abortion and birth control, and separation of church and state, Also, for school prayer, public education funds going to private schools and religious schools, and the ability to discriminate against LGBTQ people. This is only a sampling of lawsuits they have filed.

In the SCOTUS lawsuit, Town of Greece vs Galloway and Stephens, the litigants argued that the town of Greece violated the establishment clause of the constitution and aligned itself with Christianity with regard to their opening town board meetings with overwhelmingly Christian sectarian prayers for over 10 years. During those 10 years, only 3 token non-Christians ever gave the prayers , which coincidentally occurred at the time the lawsuit against the town was being filed. This new prayer policy will effectively make two of the three token prayer givers ineligible, despite the town holding up these tokens as examples of how open and inclusive they are during the lawsuit. The town of Greece did win the lawsuit in a 5 to 4 decision. Which Supervisor Relich states during his comments after Susan Galloway spoke.

Yes, I know they didn't say those exact words to each other, but it is how it sounds.

For a seasoned politician Reilich remarks were ill conceived. He does not seem to have much savvy. How did he get this far in Politics

She is a hypocrite. But he allowed her to push all of his buttons and really see him sweat. Not a very pretty sight. Almost as bad as I don't recall.

To 9:16PM ~~ I don't see her as a hypocrite at all. But what I have observed is that NOTHING is more cowardly than our Town Board's behavior of passing the policy they passed with exclusionary wording after winning the court case, or of Reilich waiting until she left the podium to try to put her down and attempting to keep her from responding. Auggie used to do that too. I'm glad she out-shouted him. I can't wait for the next election.

Her 15 minutes of fame have come and gone. She serves no purpose at Board Meetings. She is a hypocrite. And yes so are our elected officials. But so is SHE! She did lose and her case and can't seem to accept that.

SCATS said...

To 9:27PM ~~ What you aren't getting is that the wording of the Town's policy changed what was supposed to be the outcome of that case. In fact, I'd say they've created the potential for having ANOTHER case based upon the policy's exclusionary verbiage.

I am impressed that she figured out that the policy they "wrote" was lifted from this other organization. Does our town board subscribe to an online site to get their codes and policies? Is it like that lawyer from the OJ case that says we can just do our wills and start a corporation from their template documents? I can just see the ad now.....is your community being bombarded by free thinkers that don't want to listen to your prayers? Just come to our website and we will help you write a policy that basically excludes any non-established church reps from giving your invocations. Maybe they go to these sites for the verbiage of all our codes . Did anyone get the name of the organization that provided the wording (minus 2 sentences) of the policy that the board passed without any Greece community input?

It should be pointed out that the crowd of residents that was at the meeting applauded when Galloway's hypocrisyvwas pointed out. Also, Linda Stephens was there STILL demanding that the town do away with prayer at meetings. The lawsuit affirmed allowing it. But she still refuses to accept the SCOTUS decision. Whatever.

Is this where she says they got the policy idea? It looks like this organization must pray for Greece every day.

To 7:54AM ~~ Crowd?? Seriously? How many were in that "crowd"? Did ALL of them applaud? I'm SURE not all did.

To 9:15AM ~~ That appears to be the case. Notice they amended their form mid-May lol

To 7:29AM ~~ You make some EXCELLENT points! Why are we PAYING these folks to be on our Town Board, to be Supervisor and Town Attorney if they use FORMS FROM THE INTERNET??

Next thing, we're going to find out - Reilich is the grand puba behind Auggie's "Pray In Jesus Name" group lol

Have we ever seen Auggie and Reilich in the same room at the same time? Hmmmmm. I can't say that I have. Which one is the super hero and which is the mild mannered secret identity?

I am so sick and tired of Stephens and Garroway and their hidden agendas. They need to get on with their life. And Scats you should stop allowing them to rant. Yes, all is not right in the Town of Greece. But you and I know that both had hidden agendas. As do all of the politicians in the town of Greece. Why can't anyone not have a hidden agenda?????? And want to do good for the sake of doing good?

SCATS said...

To 12"14PM ~~ Exactly WHAT is their hidden agenda??

PS: SCATS has no hidden agenda at all :)

TY 4:44PM That would be hysterical ... if it weren't soooo pathetic!!

SHAME ON YOU MR. REILICH.

Anonymous said...

Great research! If you were so good at it you would realize that the reason the verbiage is taken from "that group" is because they defended the town in its supreme court case. Seems like you would want to use their verbiage so they are comfortable with it as you go forward.

SCATS said...

To 5:09PM ~~ Yes, I know it's the group that defended the Town, but I do NOT understand why we wouldn't write our own policy for this just as we do for EVERYTHING else. Why employ a lawyer if we don't use his services? Why would we want their verbiage instead of what fits our community?

Most lawyers use a boiler plate or at least start from there on most of their work.

SCATS said...

To 6:07PM ~~ Relying on an outside group to do our bidding for us makes me wonder what the Town of Greece's true agenda is ... ? It's clear that being transparent & open with ALL of its residents is NOT on their agenda. It wasn't under Auggie & I think it may even be worse under Relic.

What form of government do we have? Most would answer a Democracy! WRONG! We have a republic which is a representative form of government. We elect people to represent us and vote on our behalf. They do not have to run all the decisions by us. If we want to make those decisions run for office. No, its easier to sit here and take shots. Other than Big Rita no one else has gone through all the work it takes to run for office much less get elected. Much easier to sit at a key board. If everyone here is so in tuned with what the majority of the residents want why don't you have 10,000 people behind you and you could sit in the big boy chairs!

SCATS said...

To 7:45PM ~~ Actually, there are LAWS requiring them to BE OPEN !! Obviously, they don't care about the laws except when it favors them.

As for taking shots, that what we pay them for. Otherwise, they MIGHT have to write the policy themselves ;)

Greece is a perfect example of why representative democracy does not work. The town board and Supervisor never have any discussions on issues, proposals or legislation at least when there is a public record so no one knows how they really think. It is hard to believe that 5 people can always think the same way because there have never been an item on the agenda that was not passed unanimously.

SCATS said...

To 2:21AM ~~ Of course, the other aspect is that in Greece, so many politians swap parties without swapping philosophies! Then when a Dem tries to run, they try to mock them. Beyond juvenile behavior ... but hey, the standards here are very low. We re-elected a guy who had just proven his nearly total lack of morals ... but then defend "him" when it comes to praying before a public meeting where no such prayer as is offered at 1 Vince Tofany Blvd. should be tolerated.

Anonymous said...

Morals don't exist in this town. John Auberger did away with them don't you recall?

I like Greece. I am happy to live here. I enjoy the convenience of being able to get to any store in 5 minutes. When my Mom was sick and needed her medicine for her sacroiliac I was in and out of the drug store in no time. Saved Mom from a bad night. When Dad had his thoracic nerve act up, heck I got him to the hospital right away. And it was snowing like the dickens but the road was clear thanks to those boys in the big red trucks. So next time you want to tear down Greece remember my Mom and Dad before you say anything.

SCATS said...

To 8:29PM ~~ Do you think others haven't enjoyed the "conveniences" brought by having a COMMUNITY HOSPITAL in town? As for drugstores, there's enough with drive-throughs you never have to get out of your car.

Sadly, these things won't impact your home value or your taxes the way the failing schools and rampant crime do.

Anonymous said...

The roads were clear. Seriously. That sounds like a line for an ad campaign. Heaven help us. It's not that time again. It's way too soon. Crime is down too, right? But since we can't access Crime Reports anymore we have know way of knowing.

Scats I was struck by you comment " I can't wait untill the next election". Is it possible you know something that we don't in this regard? Which NEXT. were you refrencing?
The one next year or the one 3 yrs from now? Actually, its really is of no consequence as in either case, barring resignations, the four present board members will run and be elected next year and the same will apply 3yrs from now
with one exception. The supervisor contest will be added.
History indicates that GOP will be in Control of Greece for the the foreseeable future . I t also tells us that the local Dems will trot out their usual brand of last minute virtually unknown challengers and will be continually led by a local organization run by by proven born losers. So what's to wait for that makes you appear overly optimistic that people in this town will ever consider making much needed changes
If the issues and scandals of 09 didn't give cause to pause, this prayer issue will fail as a ." Game Changer" in this one horse town.

Andy Conlon may not be able to run again as he may have exhausted his term limits. That could be why Rita is sniffing around.

Anonymous said...

3:32PM I voted for Jimmy Carter as a young Democrat. If we think Rita has anything to offer God help us! Sorry, Moon and Stars help us or as my Atheist friends say..............chirp.
I still support Obama if that tells you anything about me and I will vote for most Democrats but never, never Rita. She never smiles and she seems mad all the time. I want to vote for someone with ideas. Anyone can shoot at the incumbents and complain with a sour puss on. Give me hope, optimism and leadership.
Anyways Scats keep up the good work you must be doing something right Rochester turning and smugtown are gone and you survive.

SCATS said...

To 3:32PM ~~ Andy Conlon = empty suit.

To 8:59PM ~~ I'd vote for almost ANYONE I thought might tell us what's going on! Your argument against voting for Rita lost me at your comment about a "sourpuss." You simply aren't believable. Sorry.

Thanks for the kudos though. I had no idea Smugtown was history. SCATS has outlived at least 6 other BLOGs. If only we made $$ doing it! lol

Anonymous said...

Conlon has another 2 terms left before his term limits kick in.

SCATS said...

To 11:56AM ~~ Two? Or is it three more?

"there are four members of the Town Board who are elected for two year terms with term limits of5 consecutive 2 year terms.

Anonymous said...

Does that mean if a board member serves for 4 "2yr terms" and takes off a term or 2, that board member could still serve for 5 more consecutive terms? That could be the case since they put in "consecutive". The president of the US has a term limit that has nothing to do with consecutive. Does that mean our last supervisor could return? Is consecutive in the wording of that office.

SCATS said...

To 11:51AM ~~ That's a REALLY good question! Why is it that Greece lacks policies, rules & regs that are STRAIGHTFORWARD? Everything seems to have some sort of escape clause. To me, that makes having the policy worthless.
