Dog Census Needed In Greece

A recent article in the D&C discussed the upcoming Dog Census planned in Henrietta. It described the process and the previous outcomes to having done prior counts. It strikes me that it's an idea whose time has come for the Town of Greece though I'm not completely onboard with the described methodology. A good tweek and it would provide a sensible tool.

We've previously and frequently reported on numerous residents hoping to get approval for zoning variances to keep 4, 5, 6 or even 7 dogs or more. Typically, these requests come AFTER someone (a neighbor) complains about the noise, the odor, etc. to the Town of Greece. If all of those animals were properly licensed, vaccinated and tended to under existing laws, then the Town would know at licensing time that someone already had three other beasts residing at the address. However, it doesn't seem to work that way.

In fact, I have one neighbor who "hides" the fact he has two dogs. He waits until dark, then lets them out his front door to go poop on the neighbor's lawn.  I'm pretty sure that neither one is licensed. I have another neighbor who "hides" his 4th dog, likely because others frequently complain about the noise the other three make. Animal control was told the details by several people, but 4 dogs remain. I doubt that #4 is licensed.

Greece is a big town with lots of pet lovers. For everyone's sake, it's time to get a handle on how many dogs really live in this suburb. I bet the coffers will swell as unlicensed pets are "discovered" by a census.

Animal Control Officers can't even enforce the laws that exist now including the one that clearly states your dog is supposed to be registered with the town. How about that one Pete Braggins? Why do so many people get to slide by that one?????

To 2:34PM ~~ I agree 100%! But then I think a bonafide census would help show how little enforcement Animal Control has actually done. Braggins is beyond wishy-washy. When I asked him how much barking is to be tolerated he couldn't respond. He told me that dog owners are "given latitude" ...

Let's have a cat census while were at it. I'm fed up with my neighbors stinking rotten cat pooping in my yard and her not cleaning it up.

To 6:22PM ~~ You want me to stand up & be counted?? lol

Actually, I agree! But the laws aren't written that way :(

To be honest, I'd rather have a neighbor with dogs compared to the white city trash that just moved in down the street on Churchill Drive. All night biker parties with fireworks on weekends. I've had it. Just listed the house after living here for 15 years
I can honestly say that this neighborhood is not going to the dogs, but something much worse. Animals of the worst kind. I'm told this is going on all over Greece. WE ARE OUT OF HERE!

So it's not just me that's noticed there are too many dogs in the area and a lot of nuisance barking etc. Every house around ours has at least one dog. And they don't seem to care if it barks constantly either or at ungodly hours. Don't mind dogs but seriously put it in the house if it's not going to stop barking. We used to be able to sit in our yard when it was nice out, we can't now because there is always barking coming from somewhere. Course I suspect everyone has a dog because of the riff raff that's moving into the area and they afraid of being robbed. Can't win really. Not happy and don't plan to stay here much longer.

Wow SCATS, you must really hate dogs? Either that or you're running out of other things to complain about. Did any of you cry babies think of knocking on the doors of your neighbors doors and speeking to them about the barking? Its really very sad thats this is the best topic you can come up with.

To 11:55PM ~~ I guess you haven't been reading this BLOG for long ... the topic of animal hoarders, especially dogs, has been brought up a number of times by way of Zoning Board hearings on people who want to keep more animals than allowed under the regulations.

Actually, I love all kinds of animals. As with children, those "in-charge" need to be RESPONSIBLE!

Please tell me, how can someone who owns FOUR DOGS let them outside and not hear the barking for over an hour at a time? IMHO, it's abusive to those animals to allow that behavior. And it's negligence imposed upon the neighborhood.

I do not go to homes of people I do not know well. I might get attacked by the dogs, shot by their owner or set myself up for some ongoing harassment as a result. Sadly, these are the times we live in.

As for the topic, it is very relevant to many folks! It's a quality of life issue - barking, odor, etc. I recently read where empty-nesters are getting dogs to fill their homes & time. Too often they are choosing "rescue animals" ... the catch phrase for abused dogs with a host of bad behaviors.

There are currently NINE dogs contiguous to our property. These are average-sized lots, not farms. When the windows are open, you can almost always hear several dogs barking ... it's ruining an otherwise peaceful neighborhood.

BTW, the Zoning Board meeting on Tuesday will be hearing again from the woman who wants to keep SEVEN DOGS in her home! I hope the Zoning folks say a very loud & clear "NO!" It IS the law.

Once again, knock on the door. 9 times out of 10 people will understand and do their best.

To 11:26PM ~~ No thanks! I have certain neighbors (fewer and fewer as time goes by) that I could do that without an issue. Most of the "younger" families that are moving in have attitudes that can be downright scary at times. They live life as if they are the only people around. People who disrespect everyone about them in so many ways are best treated with a very wary eye.

"Younger" familes live life as if theyre the only people around? Sounds to me like youre the one with so many problems with everyone, maybe youre living your life like youre the only one that counts. Ive seen it over and over on this blog.

To 8:26AM ~~ Yup. I don't have much use for people who FLAGRANTLY IGNORE/BREAK the laws, rules & regulations that are intended to keep us "civil" with one another. Just so you know, owning FOUR DOGS is in violation of the zoning rules. So is the hot tub this same neighbor installed without a permit or inspection. Oddly, the ONLY ONE in the family that seems to use it is the teen son. He has groups of guys over to skinny dip at 2:30AM creating lots of noise as they take turns streaking around their backyard. At other times, he has females over for sex in the hot tub. How do I know all of this? IT IS HEARD (and seen ... ugh!) QUITE EASILY FROM OUR BEDROOM WINDOW! And this isn't the only neighbor who doesn't know how to be neighborly.
