Greece Govt Employees Top Pay Charts

THE PROBLEM: From  April 1, 2013, to March 31, 2014 the Town of Greece's 298 general employees had an average pay of $45,868, while the town's 98 police had an average pay of $97,716.

A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE:  The Empire Center's top 10 list of highest-paid government employees in the region includes Greece's Deputy Police Chief  Richard C. Downs at $151,703.

THE EXCUSE: "This is what I inherited." ~~ Bill Reilich, Greece Supervisor

THE IMPACT: Sky high assessments that frequently do NOT reflect current real estate sales prices.

Now I understand:

My attempt to have my property tax assessment lowered was rejeceted.

Now I get it. The D and C today (Friday) published data showing Greece has the highest paid public workers in the area.
Of particlual note was the pay of the Greece police. Their average annual pay is just under $98,000.
At least when I get pulled over for speeding I know I will be ticketed but a serious professional.

So why was my attempt to have my assessment reduced rejected?? DUH!   7/25/2014 4:27 AM

The only way you are going to get a tax break in this town is to abolish our local police department in favor of the sheriffs department
It's time to reconsider consolidation of public safety services county wide. Greece is an example of out of control costs for these services that result in inefficient use of tax dollars towns can no longer afford.
If the department was abolished, that would result in 30% or 3o cents on the dollar reduction in your town tax bill. Thirty percent represents the tax burden to support our own department in our yearly town tax bills. In Greece, we pay an additional 30% in our county tax bill to support the sheriffs road patrol and the jail. Think about that for a minute. Sixty cents on the dollar for public safety services if you live in Greece or one of other towns with their own departments.if that isn't enough to grab your attention, consider this FACT. The 30 % in your county bill actually subsidizes police services in towns without their own force. Pittsford, Mendon, Perinton, and Henrietta to name a few are the beneficiaries of your generous contribution with out as much as a thank you so much in return.
As a Greece resident, what you receive in return for the tax incumberance is the use if the jail as the sheriffs do not and will not patrol Greece or respond for calls for service in this town
THIS FACT is not new. It's been going on ever since the State allowed the Al Skinner run sheriffs department to add a road patrol to the constitutionally prescribed duties of a NYS sheriff which is primarily to operate a jail and process and summons servers.
Until we demand change thru the use of the ballot and vote, this rip off will continue. The other choice is to just pay your taxes and shut up and be quite.

Your assessment probably wasn't lowered because you failed to study up and learn how to build a case.

Frankly, I've listened to at least 50 people make cases before the review board since 95, and half of them are fortunate the Board can't raise assessments.

To be fair lets not take a few words from a quote to give a false impression. Here is the entire quote" "This is what I inherited," said Bill Reilich, who took office as Greece's supervisor in January. "Since I came in, I have been working very hard to cut costs and find savings, and we are in the midst of negotiations with five of our six bargaining units now, trying to get these things under control."

Reilich said he could not comment on specifics of the negotiations, but that generally the town is seeking concessions on health care contributions and is taking a hard look at starting salaries.

To 2:35PM ~~ Just think about the ADDED savings we'd get if we CONSOLIDATED OUR FIRE DEPTS. TOO!!

To 4:04PM ~~ Things changed this year. They played HARD BALL with everyone. Unless you fought via a Formal Review or went to court, you probably didn't get any reduction in the proposed increase.

To 4:05PM ~~ An excuse is STILL an excuse no matter how many extra words you attach to it. Bottom line: He's playing victim to the legacy his predecessor built. Poor, poor Bill :(

Everyone loved Todd at there event but did they know he was being compensated at $100.00 per hour? That stopped on Jan. 1, 2014.
"One of the first things I did as supervisor was make a change for all the department heads — about 20 of them — so they couldn't keep accumulating comp time and then cashing it out for a big check in September," he said. "Now, they can accumulate only five days of comp time and have to take it as time off. That eliminates those $10,000 fall bonuses."

4:18 Not poor Bill but if you really had knowledge you would know these are all civil service and union jobs. Contracts, benefits and salaries in cement. The 20 M+P jobs that are not union or civil service he reduced the pay with comp time restrictions. You really have to get out of the basement more Rita!

What is Reilich's salary??????? He too is double dipping.

If the Supervisor was so concerned with cutting cost, then why did he, the Deputy Supervisor, his Chief of Staff, and his Secretary all need brand new take home vehicles? Oh and by the way when his came him (decked out with emergency lights and sirens) he "didn't like it" so the Puppet Police Chief has it while he ordered another vehicle. I'm starting to think we may have been better off with Auggie.

SCATS said...

To 4:39PM ~~ Oh, boy do I "really have knowledge!" Let's see, just as 5:16PM & 6:51PM suggest, there are OTHER factors you overlooked.

I'd say we could cut our highway dept. by at least 1/3. Whenever they are out doing "work" it appears that 3-4 men watch while 1-2 actually move, hold tools or operate machinery. Too many supervisors, not enough Indians.

I saw some new Town vehicles recently, too. It looks like times are VERY good in Greece NY where the cop cars alone come in THREE editions.

You never give up! Wrong! Reilich is driving a 2010, a four year old vehicle.
Trim 1/3 of highway? Lets see if you say that when the snow is flying.
Remember this budget is Augies, Reilich has not done his first budget yet. Won't happen until Jan. 2015.

Deputy Chief Downs is worth every penny he's paid. Paying tremendous attention to minority female police recruits is just a limited snap shot of why he was able to transform Chief Phelan's opinion from that of the Chief openly criticizing his lack of character and maturity, to pinning stars on his collar. A miraculous transformation; it just goes to show that no matter your reputation, there is always hope for the future. Kudos to the Chief for his blue ribbon panel of stars and bars!!

Bill is still pulling in a salary as head of Monroe Republicans.

SCATS said...

To 9:19PM ~~ OMG!!! A 4 year old vehicle!!! How shameful!!!! BTW, it wasn't SCATS who brought up his new wheels ;)

Reilich took the reins January 1, 2014. Why does he have to wait until January 1, 2015 to make changes that carry an impact? I don't think he does.

Blaming Auggie seems to be the soup du jour ... the interesting thing is that Billie had nothing bad to say about Auggie when he was still in office, despite the fact Billie was head of the GOP at that time! Now he's blaming him??? lol

To 9:59PM ~~ YUP!! He sure is.

Even Rita should be "Leary" of all this police insider info!

A deputy friend of mine told me the cops in the other town departments are LTAO with regard to the three different FLAVORS the GPD cop cars come in. The standard joke is called GPD' flavor of the month combination. Their PDs are following the new county theme of one color cars all either black or dark blue In Greece we have the white crown Vic's, the grey caprices and the new black and white caprice taxi cab color scheme.

SCATS said...

To 4:15PM ~~ I find it confusing, not to mention ridiculous.

Then they wonder why Greece is a laughingstock ...

Anonymous said...

4:15 Can't anything here be acurate? The white crown vic's are phasing out because they don't make them anymore. The grey cars of which there are only 4 or 5 left were a failed experiment. That color was discountinued in 2015 so there was no way to stick with grey.
The black and white are the new colors, get over it. The white is not paint but a decal just like every other towns marking. All the new cars are all black. Oh and they are not caprices as was stated they are interceptors and explorers. And yes Ford has a habit of keeping black as a color choice going back to Henry Ford.

SCATS said...

To 6:23PM ~~ You ask "Can't anything here be acurate?"

Apparently not!

First, you misspelled accurate.

Then you tell us the grey color "was discountinued (sic) in 2015" ... Please don't tell me that the 2015 models weren't avail. in the early spring of 2014. I'm just not buying it.

BTW, if you seek to become more influential, spelling & grammar go a LONG way in helping people think you MIGHT know what you're talking about.

Anonymous said...

Well Scats as you can tell by my lack of spelling skills I am a male, or maybe my typing is not up to par. I assume since you are proficient at spelling you are a female Rita, you don’t mind if I call you Rita? Scats seems so impersonal and Rita seems like that should be your name.

SCATS said...

To 9:48PM ~~ Like your spelling, your assumptions are flawed. It seems to me that a BLOG that is rooted in the topic of EDUCATION should make some effort to spell correctly, punctuate properly and adhere to basic rules of grammar. Wouldn't you agree, Howie?

The plot thickens.
Stupervisor Bill is saving taxpayers tons of money. He has kicked AARP and some other geezer group out of the Eastman Room for their monthly dog & pony shows.

Bill says the dog & pony shows are beneath the dignity the Eastman Room should have, and that the room should only be used for Town Board Meetings. Oddly this is in direct opposition to what taxpayers were told when Town Palace was constructed.

Maybe Bill is just afraid some geezer will croak in there and the group will stuff the corpse in the cloak room, and it will cost the Town to remove the cadaver.

Meanwhile DPW is running Prentis Loaders and dump trucks up and down Latta Rd on SATURDAY. Looks like DPW is grabbing some overtime pay to get ready for the 2015 cutbacks.

Way to go Mr Stupidvisor!

SCATS said...

To 12:32AM ~~ MAYBE he will give AARP what Auggie promised them when they were removed from West Ridge School years ago, planted in the Eastman Room and told "someday you can have space in a Senior Center that we're going to build." When the Senior Center opened, Auggie's group told them: "SURE you can have space in there. How much do you want to rent??"

Anonymous said...

AARP is a multi million dollar organization, they should stop sucking off the Greece tax payers all while they charge the members a annual dues. Only Greece and Webster give them space, for free they should not complain. No other town or the city does that!

SCATS said...

To 8:47PM ~~ FYI, the local AARP groups get nothing in the way of support from the national group. Dues to the local groups are nominal.
