Playing Ambulance Driver Causes Fatal Crash

WHERE'S THE TICKET/S FOR SPEEDING,
RUNNING THE LIGHT?

"We know for sure there was no malicious intent, no road rage, no alcohol involvement, nothing to that effect.  It simply appears that a father was trying to rush his sick daughter to the hospital." ~~ Deputy Chief Jason Helfer*, GPD & colleague of Felicia Gilchrist Amiger

"Her father came from Gates to pick her up and was driving south on Long Pond when his car collided with an eastbound car at the intersection."

"She was a great, fun-loving person, very friendly, very jovial. At first it crosses your mind when you're at the scene but you're focused on getting the job done at hand and hours afterward you start thinking about this could happen to any of us. I'm glad to see that she did have her family around her which is important. The family seems pretty close. It's unfortunate the last 12 or 13 years what she had to deal with just coming out of the academy. She really loved doing the job." ~~ Deputy Chief Helfer, Greece Police Dept.

*Quietly named as one of two Deputy Chiefs by Greece Town Board 5/20/14

SCATS ~~
  • If this was such an emergency, why wasn't an ambulance called, instead of having daddy drive from Gates to Greece and then head to Unity? Cops should know better, shouldn't they?
  • Was she trying to avoid receiving a +/- $1000 ambulance bill with a +/- $100 copay?
  • Do I understand correctly that I can "put on my Super Hero cape," pretend to be an ambulance driver and race my kid to the hospital in Greece and won't get ticketed for speeding, running a light & causing another car to collide with me as long as there is no "malicious intent?"
  • Can I also do that if I just need to get home really fast because I gotta pee or feel ill? Or will it only work if my passenger or me are pals with the cops?
  • How did Helfer determine "intent" and "alcohol involvement" when the investigation was only just begun at the time of that statement?
  • Is it possible Helfer is just TOO CLOSE to this case to use good judgment?
  • What happened to the "Command Structure" Baxter built to ensure GPD's corrupted past couldn't repeat itself?
  • Why are we back to having Deputy Chiefs, instead of the three Captains?
  • Has corruption returned to the Greece Police Dept.?

"Although this is a tragic event that someone lost her life it smacks of Nick Joseph . Gpd needs to do a self check now!" ~~ A Facebook friend

Christ ,you are a heartless person. The guy just lost his daughter and your outraged because he was not ticketed
What it Gods name is wrong with you.Sure he was wrong but don't you think he just suffered the ultimate penalty knowing he just caused the death if his daughter. You should be ashamed your self for those callous unfeeling remarks just to take your usual shot at the cops. Unbelievable!

SCATS said...

To 3:38PM ~~ How do you know he caused her death?? Because YOU are a cop, right? The media says that hasn't been determined ;)

But for the grace of God he didn't kill the person driving the OTHER CAR!

PS ~~ Since when does QUESTIONING what happened (I asked LOTS OF QUESTIONS) equate to "taking shots at the cops"??

Anonymous said...

Wow you at stretching now. I find it funny you believe the police should tell every single aspect of every case to the public. As far as alcohol involvement it's pretty simple. If the don't smell alcohol and there is no indication of alcohol then it's not involved. Blood test will ultimately show it. How do you know the car was speeding? Believe it or not not everyone gets a ticket at an accident, in fact I bet most don't. Helfer was the spokesman not the person investigating. How does Deputy Chiefs mean corruption couldn't 3 captains be just as corrupt. You love to complain about the cops. This looks NOTHING like Nick Joseph to me. Shaking my head!!!!!

SCATS said...

To 3:54PM ~~ The car was speeding because it ENTERED AN INTERSECTION WHEN THE LIGHT WAS RED.

Please tell me what is the legally allowed speed for crashing a red light when another car has the right-of-way? Oh wait, there isn't one!

REMINDER: Comments that attempt to make the BLOG or its author/s the topic, instead of staying on topic probably won't get posted. It's not about us.

Also, some of you should be ashamed of your vulgar remarks, resorting to name-calling because you can't compose an intelligent, logical sentence to make your point.

Who the hell is DC Helfer?
Did he come from MCSO on a Lateral?

This is an obvious Blue Wall being thrown up to protect a family member of the Brotherhood.

Failure to issue appropriate citations at wrecks is common with GPD, after all unless it's a Town Vehicle involved why bother doing the job you are paid to do? When it is a Town Vehicle, or politician's kid LET THE COVERUP BEGIN.

Greece, NY- Unsafe at any time!

SCATS said...

To 4:44PM ~~ Different Helfer, same family. The MCSO is JOHN. The GPD cop is Jason.

I agree about the Blue Wall.

I'm sure emotions are running high on this thread SCATs. Good questions though. I hope we get some answers soon. Beware that thin blue line.

It didn't take very long at all did it? Neighborhood Watch groups will be no on more shortly as well.

SO, even using GCSD accepted methods of time & distance math problems, we can project GVA, Monroe, Rural Metro, or Barnard could have arrived at the female patient's residence, and had her under evaluation before the father arrived from Gates.

We can also project from known facts that the female patient would probably be alive today had any of the ambulances been summoned.
Since we know she was a City employee such ambulance service would probably have been covered by her health care system.

ABSOLUTE BRILLIANCE!
Congratulations Dad, and thanks ever so for causing a wreck!
You deserve NO SYMPATHY!

To 5PM ~~ I don't like your tone about the father. It is sad that he lost his daughter, preventable (likely) but sad.

To 5PM ~~ Dewey Corridor Group is close to 6 feet under.

Hi SCATS,

You asked "Has corruption returned to the Greece Police Dept.? "

In all honesty, I don't think it ever left. May get worse again with Phelan Jr. Time will tell.

As far as the father is concerned. I have empathy for him, he lost a child; but no sympathy. His actions MAY have caused the death of his daughter, maybe the postmortem will tell.

He is very lucky he didn't seriously injure or kill the driver of the other vehicle. GPD might have had to take action then, instead of releasing a statement in reference to "malicious intent", etc...

Keep asking the tough questions!

Thanks again SCATS.

I'm sorry scats but your comments have more often than not become a referendum on this site when it comes to certain topics of particular concern to you, namely cops unions and teachers. You just can't stand the heat especially when you can't come up with a rebuttal .you yourself stray from the topic by answering comments that stray from the topic then conveniently cut off debate when you get cornered as you just did. As Jack Nicholson said YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!

SCATS said...

To 6:10PM ~~ As you may have read previously, I've always said that those who remain at GPD but stayed silent during the Rahn/Joseph/Pignato meltdown are a cause for concern that corruption might be an ongoing issue. The culture that supported it before is likely still there in their behavior, attitude & handling of duty.

Thank you for the kudos :)

To 6:24PM ~~ Huh?

While it's a tragedy, and no one knows what was going through the dads head when he chose to transport her to the hospital himself, it was an accident. Accidents happen, but this was preventable for so many reasons. Scats raises valid questions. I'm wondering how the driver of the other car is going to make out from this. Not their fault at all, but since the dad wasn't ticketed and he was clearly at fault, it might take those insurance companies weeks to straighten this out. Meanwhile, What if he (or she) doesn't have rental car coverage? Who's gonna pay for that while the cars being fixed, if it even can be fixed. It's terrible this happened, it's not right how GPD handled it, and the poor person who legally entered the intersection now has a whole lotta crap to deal with.
Just my comments on it, not looking to start drama.

Where do you get your information from? The Dewey Corridor Group is very much alive and kicking and no where near six feet under. There is a new President and new leadership.

SCATS said...

To 8:17PM ~~ Straight from the horse's FB page. WHEN was your last meeting? The one in March with Baxter was cancelled, never rescheduled as promised. Where was the annual meeting with the GCSD Supt & Finance folks about the budget? Oh, you didn't have one. Providing "fruit bags" to cops is an appropriate activity to keep y'all busy.

SCATS said...

To 7:32PM ~~ Exactly! The insurance company hassle isn't going to be any fun, especially when you are 100% sure you had the right of way.

Anonymous said...

All you experts amaze me. Now let me teach you something. With an accident as serious as the outcome of this one, no tickets are ever issued until the reconstruction/investigation is complete. You are all jumping the gun, barely 12 hours has past. As a result you might all have a big egg on your face. You had better put the bread in now for toast!

SCATS said...

To 8:51PM ~~ Don't go prematurely scrambling my eggs when the new Deputy Chief proclaimed EARLY IN THE DAY that: "We know for sure there was no malicious intent, no road rage, no alcohol involvement, nothing to that effect."

In case you didn't pick up on that, HE KNOWS FOR SURE ;)

Anonymous said...

Why would it be hard for the Insurence company to figure out? A ticket has no bearing for Insurence company, there is still a Police accident report that will be submitted that says vehicle A ran red light and hit vehicle B who had right of way. Also NY is a no fault state. If the other driver doesn't have retal coverage, once again a ticket won't change that. The other drive would have a case to go after the father to recoup deductibles, and other non covered costs. Bottom line if you have a serious injury or illness, call an AMBULANCE.

SCATS said...

To 8:54PM ~~ Ask an insurance investigator. There will be a battle between the insurance companies. Without any tickets, his won't wanna pay. Issuing tickets makes it more clearcut, less hassle.

Anonymous said...

I'm the 7:32 commenter. And I know from past experience that the other driver will indeed have to wait weeks if not months for the insurance companies to hash it out, regardless of how it happened. That's what ins companies do, they figure stuff like this out, but not as simple as just reading the police report. Much more to it. And when there's a fatality, it takes forever. The deceased was a passenger in a car, so the ins issue relates to her as well. As for not having rental car coverage, I didn't say that had ANYTHING to do with a traffic ticket. All I'm saying is that while it's tragic accident, the innocent driver will have a lot of crap to deal with. Of course an ambulance should've been called in the first place. That wasn't my point.
I speak from the experience of being an innocent victim of a fatal accident caused by a speeding driver who ran a stop sign. 4 years later, I'm still paying a price.
Not looking to debate anything, just commenting and adding my two cents from the experience I had.

SCATS said...

To 10:15PM ~~ Please don't let the others deter you from posting. Some people on here speak from a position of complete ignorance.

I'm sorry you have to go through so much. Hopefully, you weren't injured, or have healed physically if you were. Was that accident in Greece?

Anonymous said...

People can sue for anything. Even though we assume the dad ran the light his car was T-boned by the law abiding car. Still the law abiding car slammed into the renegade car. The law abiding "car" may have caused the damage that killed the girl. Even though the driver of the law abiding car was not doing anything wrong ,the family of the deceased will probably go after the law abiding car and his or her insurance company for damages. Just wait. This could happen anytime within 3 years after the accident.

SCATS said...

To 7:31AM ~~ Well said. It can & likely will get very messy.

"I do feel terribly for the poor guy who was trying to get his daughter to the hospital. Often times, people don't use their head when faced which a life or death situation (I think I read she had major heart problems), and probably her dad wasn't thinking straight. Still, his isn't the only life affected by this accident."

TY for sharing your personal experience with me. I hope you all recover totally very soon!

To 5:57PM ~~ What heat?? We are in the process of converting it and potentially linking to Twitter to expand our reach even further :)

really, such interesting timing ;) or maybe a convenient way to end an uncomfortable and awkward Facebook thread ;)

SCATS said...

To 7:26PM ~~ Sorry to disappoint you but the ENTIRE ARCHIVES of FB posts is available in a data download we can add to our new page soon. In fact, yesterday's discussion which continued into the wee hours of the night, and even for a bit today, exceeded 110 comments :) We think it's a new record.

The timing for expanding couldn't be better given the routine requests we receive to be part of our FB group. By adding Twitter, we can do things that just aren't possible now.

We might even revamp this BLOG soon. Stay tuned.

SCATS; I couldn't help but notice your use of "WE" in your last comments. I found it most enlightening as I always suspect that the operation of this site was more than a one person operation. A sort of Tag Team approach to blogging.

Running a red light ticket may be appropriate. But speeding ticket would not be. The speed limit is for the whole area it doesn't change to zero when there is a red light. They are completely different and unrelated. Also I think not ticketing was showing great discretion. I have been involved in several accidents not being my fault. I was issued a check almost immediately once I faced insurance company the police report which shows whose at fault. No tickets were issued. Also NYS is a no fault state so both insurance company's pay a portion regardless. Worse case your insurance company will pay for repairs then go after other ins co.

Thanks Scats for keeping my accident story private.

I just read an update on the accident on one of the news websites, and the family says they were told she died of natural causes. The story states once again that the dad ran a red light and hit another car. Then goes on to say he wasn't ticketed. Again, I feel terrible for this guy I really do! He lost his child, which I personally think would be the most horrible thing ever to have to deal with...I just can't even imagine! But it doesn't change the fact that he was at fault in causing the accident and regardless of his terrible loss, he should've been ticketed. I wonder if the GPD knew him or his daughterersonally. Like I said, in our case the other persons ins company tried every way they could to find ME at fault, and even brought up the point that the guy who hit me wasn't ticketed! Hard to give a ticket to a dead person.

My thoughts go out tithe family of the woman who died the other night, and my thoughts are also with the other driver and the bs they will no doubt deal with from insurance.

Not looking for debate, just commenting.

Scats just Curious. I posted a rather lengthy comment about traffic citations yesterday and have yet to see it posted. Was there a problem or did you not receive it or you haven't had time to post it. Just wondering.

SCATS said...

To 6:02AM ~~ Actually, SCATS has been on both for quite awhile, though Twitter more for getting info than sharing it.

PS ~~ Your "red flag" looks a lot like a pair of wornout boxers.

To 7:04AM ~~ There has ALWAYS been a "we" on SCATS. There are multiple contributors ... "sources" if you will ... plus those who provide artwork or sometimes help with technical stuff.

SCATS said...

To 10:04AM ~~ My reference to a speeding ticket and saying the limit is '0' going through a red light was sarcastic. Having said that, every report I have seen or heard states he was RUSHING to get her to the ER. I'll bet he WAS speeding in his "rush" as well.

To 10:08AM ~~ Yes, Helfer knew Gilchrist, the daughter.

SCATS said...

I just skimmed through today's news from several websites. From today's D&C story, it says: "Her dad was trying to rush her to the hospital when the crash occurred," Helfer said." Then later it says: "What caused the crash remained under investigation, he said."

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that this is the lasat we are ever going to hear about this. It's predictable. Daddy is exhonerated from causing her death. It's Friday. No charges or tickets issued, done deal.

Again I'm going to ask: If YOU were driving that car do you think you would have NOT been ticketed?

Usually, tickets for speeding & crashing the light are to be expected. Since there are some injuries, additional charges running the gamut from wreckless driving to wreckless endangerment could also be lodged.

To 11:39AM ~~ Who said anything about "family"?? As for being "Christian-like" I don't believe any of us have EVER discussed our personal religious beliefs.

BTW, I think true Christians know it's supposed to be capitalized lol

Lastly, let's stop with the discussion about SCATS and stick with the latest scandals, snipers, corruption, etc. that makes Greece NY Greece NY. We typically do not post comments that are personal to SCATS ;)

Does Reilich "own" the Chamber? How did he get rid of her? Who's the new grand puba at the C of C?

Hey, the Penguin promised changes and returning Greece to its former greatness.. Lmao Same old politics as usual, Helfer is a Favorite Son oif county big wigs? His meteoric rise to the top was of epic proportions,
One thing the doesn't square though, he was very tight with Baxter, so close he looked like his shadow, Go figure. But after all this is Greece, AWIDE OPEN TOWN.

SCATS said...

How much is Deputy Chief Rick Pignato and Deputy Chief Jason Helper costing us? I guess the million dollar plus investigation that said we should do backgrounds on chiefs did not mean anything, LOL

SCATS said...

To 10:02PM ~~ I don't know since our Town Board and PD are both back to telling us nothing. What I also recall about our million dollar investigation is that Baxter designed a Command Structure based upon 3 Captains to prevent the Rahn corruption from ever happening again ... or so he claimed. That design is history just weeks after Baxter getting run out of Dodge City.
