What Happens On Spring Break In Jamaica ...

... Does NOT Stay In Jamaica!

Especially not when it involves drinking, theft and the infamous progeny of a certain Greece school board member and breaking the law.

Will the Greece Rotary rescind their "Outstanding Youth" award??

So is this why the board pres. missed the meeting?

Awe shucks I missed the story. What happened?

To 4:16PM ~~ I missed the meeting too. I was told Julia wasn't there, but not told why.

To 4:42PM ~~ Ask an Athena HS senior. Apparently it's the talk of the town ;)

What person in their right mind would take teenage boys to Jamaica and then let them drink. She must have forgotten how her son loves to brag about things. My son told me the kids all knew about this on Monday at school and they weren't even back yet. Great example she sets for our school district. Can't wait to listen to her at the next board meeting saying how wonderful everything is and how great all the students are.

To 9:08PM ~~ Were ALL of the kids boys? Anyone know which parents volunteered to go along?

Not sure what laws were broke? Everything I see says Jamaica has no drinking age and an age of 18 to purchase. So if they followed local laws no big deal.

To 11:33AM ~~ The legal issue revolves around the alleged theft of and distribution to others of a number wristbands that sell for $250 each. The wearer gets unlimited drinks with such a purchase ;)

A search of the internet reveals several pics of the boys at the resort. Some are even wearing the contraband. BOLD!

Assuming some of you are parents, whatever happened to that tried and true denial defense. KIDS WILL BE KIDS AFTER ALL. Not so?

SCATS said...

To 9:20AM ~~ Kids will be kids?? That's your BEST defense of this ridiculous and shameful escapade??

In THIS household, the KIDS have NOT, will NOT and do NOT go on spring break trips to Caribbean Islands with a large group of other teens, not even if it was a school sponsored trip, which this was NOT! It's a recipe for disaster, as we can ALL see from this episode.

Being a RESPONSIBLE PARENT means saying "NO!" at times ... this would have been one in this home.

Regardless that, had I lost my mind and actually allowed a son to go on such a venture and then learned he stole a bunch of $250 wrist bands so he & his pals could drink like fish in a foreign country, he would be grounded to his room until he turned 30, upon returning home. WHY DO PARENTS FUND TRIPS LIKE THIS FOR TEENS???? It's crazy! It's ASKING FOR TROUBLE!!

It's the 5 year anniversary of the disappearance of Brittanee Drexel. Her name and Natalee Holloway SHOULD COME TO MIND BEFOREPARENTS SAY "YES" TO SUCH TRIPS.

It wasn't a kids trip, he went with his family and was allowed to bring some of his under 18 friends. Although he is 18 and allowed to drink in Jamaica the friends were not hence the need to steal wristbands for the others to drink. It wasn't like the boys just decided to take a trip there was parental supervision which in this case was not much of a help.

It's not nor never was MY defense. However as you well know, others, refusing to accept the fact that Johnny or Jane did anything wrong and if they did it's for that reason and no other, have used this tactic. It's certainly not our fault as parents that Jane and Johnny are out of control. To them it's perfectly logical and a total cop out regarding their parental responibilities and denial of their failure as a resonsible parent and adult.

To 12:50PM ~~ I'm told there were 2 sets of parents on this trip to accompany more than a dozen teens. I'm also told they were NOT his parents.

In either case, here's the BOTTOM LINE: This young man has been in trouble previously. His antics are fairly well known in GCSD. Ditto some of his pals. Mommy-dearest has used her "status" to deal with the wake of his exploits (not to mention his failures) in Greece Central. Given that history, how did he earn such an opportunity as this?? WHERE'S DAD??? Merely because the boy will graduate in June, he gets a trip to paradise island where all you can drink for $250 is OK at 18??

In this home (mine), the ONLY trip to the Caribbean will be the one with mom & dad going. The kiddies get to stay home with other family, doing chores. They will get their week at the beach when we stay in the cabin during the summer, just as always.

IMHO it's really TOO BAD this student didn't have to do jail time instead of coughing up $$ to pay a fine (Thanks again to the parents, right?). God help the frat boys on whatever campus he lands on in Sept. He's sure to bring them down and make the headlines doing it.

To 1:34PM ~~ There is a big difference between expecting an 18 yr. old who is about to graduate to know "right from wrong" and expecting a CHILD in elementary school (for example) to know "right from wrong." It used to be that the schools helped to instill common values in children which supported the parents work at home. NOW, the schools claim it's not their job, period. So much for the "it takes a whole village to educate one child" mindset that was popular amongst teachers a few years ago! They EXPECT perfectly behaved 5 yr. olds and it ain't ever going to happen, not even their own children can achieve that.

Also, in this case, the 18 yr. old has repeatedly been in trouble of various sorts, bailed out by mommy's title via her volunteer position on the BOE. He doesn't face his consequences, so he doesn't learn. It's CLEARLY a failure of parenting in this case!

I better NOT hear her admonishing anyone about "Where are the parents?" ever again ;)

His parents were on the trip, it wasn't a coincidence that she missed the board meeting. Just ask, you will hear that they indeed in Jamaica with the kiddos, turning a blind eye apparently.

To 1:16AM ~~ I knew there was more than one version of the details circulating around, so that's why I didn't post the story upfront. It seems to me that in her position on the BOE that she would be better at tending to her own brood, given how religious she is and all. But maybe that would require time away from Babs and her partying ways ... the apple might not be falling too far from the tree ;)

Okay, I guess I'm not going to find out who this BOE member is. I get it, names aren't going to be given out here. That's cool. I'm new to Greece .... and ready to leave Greece as a matter of fact ... because I've had issues already with the way a certain situation was handled. But I do have another question - if I want to let's just say *discuss* my dissatisfaction with the superintendents office, who do I go to? I'm thinking the BOE but it sounds like I won't get anywhere with them either.

To 12:47PM ~~ It's Greece where "discovering the promise" means you will be stone-walled at EVERY turn! Consider this: an anonymous BLOG that's getting bigger & stronger after EIGHT YEARS!? WHY?? Because it is a place that helps to do what the media used to do. In fact, it is fairly obvious to those who want to see that the media OFTEN gets stories from reading this website!

Going to the BOE is useless. Going to the media might work. The district detests bad press. If you want to leave an indelible mark, send it to me and I can post it if it follows certain rules and you will allow me to edit so I won't get sued. The email here is: cannedclams@aol.com

Be sure to say something specific about the topic in your subject line or it might not get opened.

Scats, I appreciate your input I really do! I'm just hesitant to tell you our story because I'd have to include a lot of personal info about my family to explain the whole insane situation. And as much as I want to go to the media, for the same reason I'm hesitant to do so. My child still has to go to school here and I don't want him treated badly or made fun of because I brought this out in the open.

We were lied to (shocker!) by the people in the business of educating our children. And the really sad part is, at this point I can't even figure out WHO is lying! It's been a frustrating school year that's for sure. As a parent, nothing hurts more than seeing your child suffer. The last thing I want to do is cause any more heartache for my kid.

To 8:39PM ~~ Are you trying to say that the PROFESSIONALS of Greece Central would TARGET YOUR KID!? Tell me it ain't so!!!

Actually, I do NOT blame you one single bit! These wackos on the public buck (and union kool-aid) can be downright EVIL, especially if it involves hushing up a malcontent parent. Been there & seen it up close and personal a number of times.

BEST OF LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!

My best advice: If there is ANY WAY POSSIBLE, LEAVE GREECE!

To the person whose panties are in a major twist about this BLOG today (weeks AFTER the fact) ~~ I'm NOT going to post your drivel DESPITE the fact you've attempted (but failed) to make it appear that several people were posting similar views. BUSTED!! :)

What does the rotary have to do with this?..NOTHING this is none of your concern you should take this post down honestly, it was just a simple vacation.

SCATS said...

To 10:21AM ~~ YOU are the ONLY PERSON to mention "ROTARY" on this page, so please tell us what it has to do with it :)

And, yes, it is ALL of our concern when the head of the BOE dares to sit in judgment of the other parents of the Greece Central School District and THEN has to hide what her tots do!

I've had lots of "simple vacations" but NONE EVER ENDED WITH LEGAL TROUBLE!
