Recent Grad Lands ASL Job; Boasts On Facebook

Posted to Facebook on Wednesday by my "former" Facebook friend, Donald Petroske-Enedy ~~

"After much time, work and fingerprinting, I am now officially an employee of the Greece Central School district and will work at Olympia's, "primary American Sign Language Educator" for the rest of the school year."

I privately messaged him asking if he was a certified teacher. His response was to "unfriend" me, so I guess the answer is an emphatic "NO!"

Apparently, Donald was hired to replace Sharon Duffy, Olympia's former ASL teacher who resigned in March after using inappropriate language.

Hopefully he's able to sign "as" rather than "at" when it's appropriate in a sentence.

Only filling in until the end of the year means it it probably a long term sub position. Therefore does not need to be a certified teacher. However who ever is hired to fill the spot permanently will need to be.

To 8:14AM ~~ I'll cut him some slack on that since it's been LESS THAN 1 YEAR SINCE HE GRADUATED FROM OLYMPIA HS.

To 10:09AM ~~ Where did "only filling in until the end of the year" come from?? If THAT is the case, what qualifies a 19 yr. old who graduated less than 1 year ago to teach HIS PEERS?? Not to mention, he is supposed to be attending RIT/NTID for his own studies. Did the BOE & Babs approve this move???

For the rest of the school year to me says filling the position to the end of the year. And I have no idea who he is what he know, therefor I have no idea wheather he's qualified or not.

To 12:09PM ~~ Well, I do know quite a bit about him. He is NOT qualified to be a longterm sub under current rules. As I stated earlier, he hasn't been out of high school for even 1 full year as yet.

Donald is more qualified then anyone else the school can put in there right now. I am happy to have him. If we can't have Duffy then Donald is the next best thing. I am proud if him for stepping up and filling in until the end of the year.

Funny how u never post any positive comments, only your own extremely negative, judgemental, and completely asinine gibberish. Its very, very sad. U have the whole "check your bullying and name calling at the door" disclaimer, yet it appears to me that, that is exactly what your whole blog is about. How does anything u discuss and judge help our community in anyway? Its all negative and anytime someone tries to post a comment tht u dont agree with, u deny it. Must be nice to be able to act as judge and juror, yet hide behind a ridiculous, one sided blog. Im confused, and frankly, I just dont get it??

I must be blind? I dont see the "boasting" at all.

He is way more qualified then what olympia has given our children so far! I will take Donald anyway! He cares about our children and our school! And this is coming from a parent of a student in his class!

To 1PM & 2:02PM ~~ That is a very SAD state of affairs for our district, wouldn't you agree? Will we be hiring 16 yr. olds to "teach" elementary students next? Why not?? I'm sure most of them know their colors, numbers, how to tie shoes ...

To 1:42PM ~~ Is YOURS a "positive comment"??? LOL What is "asinine" to me is when someone criticizes another person and can't even correctly spell "judgemental" (sic) when JUDGING that person!

To 1:46PM ~~ Posting such stuff to Social Media so your hundreds of "friends" can see is nothing BUT boasting.

Other comments have been rejected for various reasons including inappropriate language (why am I NOT surprised!?).

I appreciate your concerns about the district's hiring practices, Babs and the BOE aren't following their own rules. But it seems like you are attacking the kid who is more likely the district's victim, not the villain.

To 6:05PM ~~ This "hire" is ridiculous when you consider that we have one of, if not the largest, deaf/hard-of-hearing populations in the US! NTID is just 10 miles down 390 ... but this was the BEST we could do for the students??

As for Donald, how mature is that for him to unfriend and block someone who privately asked if he had a teaching certification after he posted getting hired? It's a fair and relevant question.

What will he do under pressure on the job? This could get REALLY interesting.

Great point. Rochester is the Deaf capital. This is their language. I'd like to know what they think about the whole situation, including the complaint against the teacher that started it all.

My question is simply..."what special accommodations are being made to socially promote those students who have not received proper education, nor been given the skills necessary to receive the language credit required for graduation?"

While many demean the common core requirements and the botched implementation, I see them as safeguards to protect students, colleges, and businesses from accepting "graduates" who are poorly prepared!

To 7:43PM ~~ I agree with you on that!

I wonder how the Teacher's Union feels about this unlicensed individual taking a job away from one of their own?

1:00- Unknown Supporter, Please explain what "the next best thing" to a highly inappropriate, unprofessional, disgraced teacher who played perverted games in a classroom setting looks like?

FYI- Donald is apparently the ex-student who organized the "Bring Back Duffy" campaign. Anyone else find this curious? Wonder if he will emulate her teaching style? After all she is his role model.

To 9:27PM ~~ GTA has been silent for years. I'm not sure that the subs are unionized anyway ... are they??

To 9:34PM ~~ Great question!

To 9:59PM ~~ I am fully aware of that. He is also director for their upcoming production. I wondered about his style, too. Time will tell ... or maybe the camera will ;)

Yes, some subs are unionized. Isaid this at the outset of the Duffy situation that a replacement for her would be very difficult to find . Looks like I was right scats because at the time you disagreed.
Did it ever occur to some of you that this guy is the "best they could do" because of the lack of qualified teachers in that particular pool who wanted to work in GCSD?
In any case, it's unfortunate that it came to this development.

Anonymous said...

Scats, Really? He had the nerve to unfriend you? I wouldn't take it too hard though . Look at it this way and maybe you can take comfort in the fact that his actions were actually a condition of his employment. Hey, anything is possible . yes?

Here is a list of the unions. The sub teacher union is GUSTO

http://www.greece.k12.ny.us/district.cfm?subpage=2022

Maybe the State education department should be notified about this teachers "resignation" and the slipshod process for finding a replacement.
None of the present parents will bother as they seem pleased with a kid taking over the class.

9:59 Good point. He will need some mentoring since he has never taught before. He will get it from his adored mentor. So she really is not THAT retired.

To 5:41AM ~~ There is NO promise by either GCSD or NYSED to provide an ADEQUATE sub for ANT class abandoned by the teacher during the school year, regardless the situation! I have a friend who subs in the city. The friend is CERTIFIED TO TEACH K-6, but OFTEN accepts middle & HS assignments including foreign language class, art class, even phys. ed. For personal reasons, he prefers to NOT teach technology, shop, special eed. and other such classes. The FACT that GCSD is hiring a recent STUDENT to teach tells me this kid HAS CONNECTIONS, period.

To 6:11AM ~~ BS!! I have friends who are teachers. If GCSD is THAT paranoid, you should probably STOP READING HERE, too ;)

To 6:16AM ~~ I had forgotten about GUSTO. TY for the reminder. Which union covers LONGTERM subs, since GUSTO is for the per diems?

As for NYSED, I checked their website and literally, ANYONE can be hired to sub as long as it is for less than 40 days. I think GCSD waited until now knowing that hiring someone who could sign ANYTHING would win approval AND that they'd just give him the 40 days ;)

To 7:24AM ~~ I hope he's not THAT desperate for guidance!!

If your teacher" friends" are tenured, ain't a damn thing that supervision can do to them for being your "friend"
Personally I question their intelligence for having a so called "friend" they do not know. Who wants that kind of friend. One with no Identity , no substance and no heart.
Just kidding! The district officials have nothing to be paranoid about when it comes to you and your blog site. Oh, we know you exist but are not concerned about this blog and it's relevance in the court of public opinion.

SCATS said...

To 2:06PM ~~ Oh, I'm FULLY aware of that! In fact, GCSD doesn't give-a-damn about anyone's opinion ... until the crapple hits the NATIONAL NEWS.

Actually, I know some of them personally :) I've even talked at length to Donald!! If only he knew ... lol

Anonymous said...

Maybe he does. could be why he dumped you.

SCATS said...

To 4:38PM ~~ I can assure you that is NOT the case. I'm VERY confident that he has no idea about who I am, or when we last chatted ;)

The FACT is that he dumped me when I privately messaged him upon seeing his posting about getting hired. Funny thing is, if he was required to dump me as 6:11AM suggested, then why did he post first THEN dump me? Another funny thing is that Donnie ASKED to be my "friend" on FB lol

Yes - subs don't need to be certified and neither do "language interpreters." That's what he is listed as - see board docs.

SCATS said...

To 5:46PM ~~ At the time this thread was created, Board Docs showing him hired wasn't yet posted. Thanks for the Monday morning (or Tuesday evening) quarterbacking lol
