Letter To Editor: "It is time for our elected officials to be accountable for the taxes we pay. When a “committee” of unelected people like the County of Monroe Industrial Development Agency are allowed to tell elected officials who will receive tax breaks, thereby telling the other taxpayers to pay the difference, that is disrespectful and needs to stop.
The disrespect shown to a school superintendent recently who was trying to look out for taxpayers said it all. COMIDA does not like to be questioned, and it appears they do not feel they need to answer to anyone, including taxpayers. Where are our elected officials?
Any adjustment of our taxes should have the approval of all elected officials in an open vote — not some committee."

Todd Baxter ~~The Holiday Inn arson is the one case he really wanted to solve.
He describes it as: "The largest murder case in Monroe County history."
Baxter told 13WHAM news*: "Baxter said when it comes to unfinished business, he does wish he could have provided answers to the families of the ten people killed in the 1978 Holiday Inn fire in Greece.
He hoped to meet them in person and give them answers about how the fire started and who started it. But he said the investigation will continue after he leaves the department. The two lead detectives on the case, Casey Voelkl and Pat Welch, will keep working and going through evidence.
The detectives have re-interviewed many people, but have not yet questioned Bud Phillips, the Greece-Ridge Fire Chief, who was first on the scene of that fire back in 1978 and called 911 to report it.
Baxter said in any arson investigation, it is routine to focus on people who are first on the scene of a fire.
Phillips was questioned in 1978 and Baxter said he will be interviewed again, but not until investigators go through evidence seized during a search of Phillips’ office at the fire hall back in the fall.
Chief Harold “Bud” Phillips was a Lieutenant with the Greece-Ridge Fire Department in 1978. He told investigators he was driving down West Ridge Road to his job as a security guard, when he saw the smoke. Phillips said he called in the fire and then told 13WHAM he helped people escape from the burning hotel.
Phillips told 13WHAM News during previous interviews that he had nothing to do with starting the fire and he maintains to this day that the fire was not arson.
Phillips declined to be interviewed Thursday.
“I am not alone in my feeling that this fire was not intentionally set, but rather a very unfortunate accidental fire that occurred thirty-five years ago,” Phillips said in a statement.
Chief Baxter said testing by the ATF and other members of law enforcement proved the fire was arson.
Chief Baxter called the case a homicide and said he still hopes there will be an arrest so families know who caused the fire.
“An arrest? Oh yes, that’s our grand slam. An arrest for the murder of ten people, I believe the largest murder ever in Monroe County. Absolutely. You want justice, that’s what we’re here for,” Baxter said."

SCATS ~~ Well Mr. Phillips, please name three other unbiased observers who believe as you do? I'm betting you can't.
WHEC-TV reports: "The son of a local town judge has been indicted on drug charges.
Louis Nitti was arrested in December during a traffic stop in Greece. Nitti is the son of Greece Town Judge Gino Nitti.
When they made the stop, police say they found several small bags of Ritalin pills, as well as cocaine and marijuana. A Monroe County grand jury also indicted Louis Nitti on a charge of criminal possession of a weapon. Police say he had a pair of brass knuckles.
The case was transferred to Parma Town Court because Nitti’s father is a town judge in Greece."
The majority of folks think Todd Baxter is being forced out as Greece's police chief, but few have said why they think that is the case.
I have my own list of reasons, but I want to hear yours.
WHY DOES REILICH WANT BAXTER GONE?

Senator Charles Schumer will be in Greece Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. promoting funding for the Braddock Bay Restoration Project. The plan includes building a new barrier beach near the Manitou Road location to protect local wetlands, as well as opening new boating channels to the marina.
Senator Schumer says the improvement will boost property value of homes along Lake Ontario and restore game fishing to the area. Senator Schumer is calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to fund the $9 million project, which would be carried out by the Army Corps of Engineers.

GCSD Policy #6121
SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF DISTRICT PERSONNEL
The Board of Education affirms its commitment to non-discrimination and recognizes its responsibility to provide for all District employees and students an environment that is free of sexual harassment and intimidation. Sexual harassment is a violation of law and stands in direct opposition to District policy. Therefore, the Board prohibits and condemns all forms of sexual harassment by employees, school volunteers, students, and non-employees such as contractors and vendors which occur on school grounds and at all school-sponsored events, programs and activities including those that take place at locations off school premises. Generally, sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.
The Board acknowledges that in determining whether sexual harassment has occurred the totality of the circumstances should be evaluated. The Board recognizes that sexual harassment can originate from a person of either sex against a person of the opposite or same sex, and from co-workers as well as supervisors, and from a third party such as a school visitor, volunteer, or vendor, or any other individual associated with the School District. Sexual harassment may occur from student-to-student, from staff-to student, from student-to-staff, as well as staff-to-staff.
The Executive Director of Human Resources will insure that employees receive professional development on the prevention of sexual harassment.
Employee acts determined to be in violation of this policy will be subject to a review for disciplinary action per Education/Civil Service Law and the collective bargaining agreements.
The Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources is the official receiver of formal complaints for sexual harassment and is responsible for the coordination of reports.
The Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources shall be responsible to review this policy every three years.

They Want Her Re-Instated
SCATS ~~ The BOE might be able to undo a firing. I don't believe they have the power to undo a resignation. However, if Julia likes the idea, she will throw the laws, rules, etc. out-the-window, as usual ;)

A bit off topic here but hope someone can point me in the right direction... How does one get an appointment with the superintendent? I've called and left several messages, never receive a call back. My next step is going to the media, but I'd really like to talk with her privately before I do that. 3/10/2014 2:26 PM
SCATS ~~ Actually, I was wondering how the parent was able to actually talk to Babs regarding the ASL teacher, too! I know in the past, people are ALWAYS referred to some lower level peon. I know Babs' attitude is that her staffers get paid to do the dirty work. She must have realized Greece Central's legal culpability and decided it best to deal with the parent upfront, despite it being out of character for Babs. If anyone knows the secret to getting Bab's personal attention, please share it!

According to a Facebook friend, Greece Schools today told students that cell phones are no longer permitted in the classroom.
Is this their "unofficial" response to catching ASL teacher Sharon Duffy with her professional panties down?
When did the school board vote on this policy change?
Why are teachers so afraid someone will show the world how they behave behind closed doors?

Good Deed Award Should Be Given
To Mary Jo Norgaard's Daughter
"On February 27, Greece Central School District officials became aware of a social media post that included an image of Greece ASL teacher Sharon Duffy allegedly using inappropriate and offensive language during instructional time. Immediate action was taken to address the situation. Late today, the teacher submitted her resignation."
"As educators, we are advocates for students, their safety and achievement and can expect to be held to high standards of conduct at all times. We thank those who brought this troubling matter to our attention." ~~ Supt. Barbara Deane-Williams (Babs)
SCATS ~~ So Babs, if you REALLY mean what you say, then the PTA should be certain to include this brave kid in their next round of awards, right??

News 10NBC just reported that Sharon Duffy has resigned her job as an ASL teacher with the Greece Central School District.
GTA's Statement: "Greece teachers embrace high standards of professionalism inside and outside of the classroom. Unfortunately, a teacher who dedicated years of exceptional service to the school district, its students and the community made an error in judgment and has resigned her position. The Greece Teachers Association was aware of the issue, and worked collaboratively with the teacher and administration to resolve this swiftly and fairly. Teachers in Greece are caring and dedicated professionals, and this isolated incident is not going to distract them from what is most important – their work in the classroom helping all students to achieve at high levels."
News10NBC has learned the Greece Central School District is investigating one of its teachers after officials became aware of a social media post that included an image of a teacher allegedly using inappropriate language during instructional time.
School district officials tell News10NBC the teacher was placed in an alternate, non-teaching assignment pending the outcome of the investigation. We are told she will not have contact with students.
Brett Davidsen is working on this story and will have an update tonight on News10NBC at 5 and 6.
