Playing Sports With Failing Grades

Dear SCATS,

Just thought I would let you know that at least at Olympia HS, kids that play sports are allowed to have failing grades and still play.

I had a nice conversation with one of these athletes who now regrets not listening to his parents. He told me that kids are allowed to play with two "F's" and if you have a third, you can't play for two weeks.

He will have to go to MCC before he can go on to another college. He was offered several scholarships but his grades were in the toilet. I asked him if the coach was insisting on the team getting their school work done and getting good grades. The nice young man said no.

This is so sad considering a policy was passed twenty years ago to stop this same crap. You can't have kids with failing grades continue to play sports or other extra curricular activities. It is a privilege not a right. And it sends the wrong message to the kids and our community. In the real world, if you fail you get fired. Plain and simple!

SCATS ~~ I thought Gale O'Toole was all over this policy ... guess the hockey mom and men on the board got their way! The Greece Central Sports District will ruin young lives to let their athletes play, because it's ALL about winning! Academics are an after-thought here.

I forgot to add the young man ran track at Olympia. What is wrong with the coaches in our High Schools? Where are the Principals? This is just shameful. 99.9999% of all kids playing High School sports will NEVER make money off the sport they excelled in in High School or even college for that matter if they can even get to college with grades that are in the toilet.

Shame on the coaches and the leadership at our high schools!

It is too bad when playing in sports is more important that an education. It is very telling that we do not place education as the main reason for attending a school and the one activity that pays off long term. No wonder our schools are not known for either education or sports.

To 10:51AM ~~ Part of the problem is our administration fears going against the sports booster parents. They worry that budgets would get voted down if they were to make academics top dog. In other words, they allow the district to be bullied.

A true lack of leadership

My son is a Athena and he told me teachers can't give a grade below a 55 even if the kid has a 0 so this kid can't even cut it getting a healthy grade on his report card with getting help of a 55? What are we sending out in this world? Let's keep on spoon feeding students - get those graduation rates up there!

It has been like that for at least 2 years now. The first 2 quarters a student can't get below a 55 even if hey turn no work in and have a zero. I believe it was part of her new plan to meet graduation rates. If they have a 55 at the minimum it is easier to give hem a 90 the last 2 quarters to make sure they graduate and make her rates go up. She took a page out of the city school book, works there may as well try it here. So when more kids graduate like they did last year with this great scheme it will make her look like a genius. It is all a big scam, u push the kids through even if they didn't earn it.

So, why is it that we can't hold accountable these administrators? I don't see any of them getting fired over low performing schools. The decline of these schools have happened on their watch and they are not held responsible. If I were the BOE I would not renew her contract. She has done nothing positive for the district other than come in and make changes that have created havoc. In regards to students playing sports and having failing grades, it is the mindset that we cannot "take away the only thing that they have going for them" because they are failing, rather we will nurture that part of them and not worry about academics. Last I checked, schools are about education and not sports, or parties, or field trips to amusement parks, talent shows, or any other bull crap that get students out of the classroom without any educational value. I can't not believe the amount of classroom instruction that has been lost due to frivolous activities Let also add to the climate: saggy pants, headphones, caps, cell phones, credit recovery, Bullying Prevention, RTI, PBIS, Appr, Avid (latest fad or buzz program)and what ever other acronym and we have the biggest acronym of them all.........GCSD! Here is a suggestion people, how about plain ole education, the old fashion.

Is it some sort of state requirement that we push graduation rates up? After all, in a perfect world, graduation rates should probably only be in the 85% range (i.e. you'd have to be better than one standard deviation below the mean to be considered successful).

If we want 100% graduation rates, then we might as well hand out diplomas when we hand out birth certificates. Otherwise, graduation has to mean accomplishment of a standard, and judgment against a standard will always mean some risk of failure, else the standard was really no standard at all.

Even Army basic training only has an 86% completion rate, and that’s counting all of the recycles and preconditioning kids (recruits who have to take basic training twice, or have to take a weight-loss and strength training program before they start basic) with the rest in the 86% if they eventually complete basic.

10:09 - well said

Lower standards and more spending seems to be the mindset of the monopoly known as public education.

To 10:09PM ~~ You sound a lot like me! I've said many of the same things for years now. I've also said that due to financial constraints, we can NO LONGER BE ALL THINGS TO ALL STUDENTS. Something's gotta give!

My son goes to olympia and plays sports and the coach does implement the failing grade policy. If they carried an F they had to bring in a signed sheet from the teacher every Friday until it was better. Our hockey Coach sat kids!!!

To 1:31PM ~~ Perhaps different coaches do things differently. Do YOU think a student should be permitted to fail a subject & still play?

I would go further and say that they should not be failing any class, should have a minimum of a C average, a limited amount of referrals (3) and be of outstanding moral character. But here is where there would be a problem, there would be no one eligible to play a sport if they had to follow my criteria. I think that would solve some budget issues, nothing to fund!!!!!!

To 5:30PM ~~ Please consider running for BOE. You have my vote!

Thanks scats! We do tend to agree on many things.

Yup, that's why your postings appear!

To 3:03PM ~~ Huh??

Anonymous said...

9:27 said that s/he "agrees with you on many things." I commented "that's why your postings appear." That's not the case with many who sometimes disagree with you.

SCATS said...

To 4:56PM ~~ How would you know that "many" don't agree with me & their comments don't get posted?? You don't/can't, so that's just talking crapple.

Anonymous said...

Not true Scats. I have spoken personally to "many" (defined as 4-5) Greece residents who have told me that, during the past year or so, have tried to have you post comments in which they strongly disagreed with your position on something only to find that their comments never got posted. Deny it all you want, but you ARE guilty of doing that! (Hmmm, I wonder if THIS comment will suffer the same fate?)

SCATS said...

To 8:24AM ~~ First of all, given the volume of readers, I don't consider 4-5 as "many" but a few.

Secondly, lots of comments do not get posted for breaking rules like NAME-CALLING & SWEARING ... the two top offenses.

Third and fourth would be repeatedly posting the same/similar comment to the thread and bullying/threatening.

Other issues include posting such poorly constructed coments, they are barely understandable or turning the topic to discussing SCATS/who I am/my personality/character (just as YOU have) instead of discussing the thread.

Some people do NOT comprehend English well enough to understand that name-calling means things like "The guy who wrote that other comment must be a moron." Or that "The cops could show up at your door" is threatening.

Since you haven't seen their comments, you really aren't in a position to judge their posts. But feel free to believe whatever you like.

LET'S GET BACK TO THE TOPIC AT HAND.

Hi, Scats. 4:56 here. I would be happy to provide you with 2-3 very specific examples of topics that never got posted, however, then they STILL wouldn't get posted, would they? (g)

To 2:47PM ~~ I'm usually quite open to suggested topics, so I can't imagine WHAT you could be talking about. Unless you want it spun a particular direction ...

See the current BLOG for another example of how I do post topics requested by readers: http://greeceschool2006.blogspot.com/2013/06/tell-us-your-pet-peeves-about-greece.html
