With A Little Bit Of Power ...

Comes Great Arrogance

Guess whose son got a summer job with the district? That's right, Julia's. Never even saw a posting for summer positions and yet the Board Presidents kid has a summer job. First her younger son gets private tutoring so he can pass the social studies exam ( who knows if he actually passed the exam, what teacher would fail him after he was tutored by one of the Superintendent's favorite boy toys) and now the older one is working a summer job at district office. Watch out DO employees Julia has another mole aside from her personal friend, the Board clerk. Oh the things she'll be able to hold over people now. Please, please, please let there be a new Board President come July.   5/28/2013 11:47 PM

SCATS ~~ If anyone wants to know what NOT TO DO, look to our "leaders" in Greece! This goes beyond bad form ... way beyond.

I don't understand why this would surprise anyone. We've all known that for far too long the special interests among the BOE, and those who support this group, are THE major deciding factors when voting on issues. Unfortunately education of our district as a whole never seems to be one of the special interests. The mere fact that an embattled BOE member, who knows this information is going to surface, would allow this to go on with a family member speaks volumes about her brazenness and/or her being totally out of touch with public opinion.

BTW, isn't this the same kid that was acting and portraying himself in a totally inappropriate manner online a while back? Of all applicants, why would he be the hire?

The SAME kid who got that ridiculous Rotary award for calling 911 because of an unsubstantiated post on social media.

I heard he was a fine young man, and quite deserving of the job.

Did the boe approve his hiring? I searched several months of boe minutes and can't find it.

Fact, Julia paid for that private tutoring. Given the past history of former board members,a summer job for a board member’s son pales in comparison when Walts placed the son of one of our former larger board members at Pine Brook as per his request. It would be wise to remember that board members "volunteer" their time, which is considerable, to serve on the board without
compensation with not so much as a thank you from you arm chair quarter backs who delight in taking out your personal frustrations on them. The implication that Julia used her influence as board president has no FACTUAL FOUNDATION.

To 5:57PM ~~ SHOW US.

I'm sure you can't back up anything you stated, past or present.

5:57. Please ..you really believe that Julia paid for that private tutoring , then you are kidding yourself. Why don't you ask the head of instructional technology or whatever his new title is if he received money to tutor the snowflake. The answer is going to be a big fat resounding NO. I am pretty sure he wasn't getting paid by her to tutor him on work time. It was a favor, I don't necessarily have a problem with him doing the favor however my problem is the same favor is not offered to every other parent of a student that is struggling. Certain present board members are given special treatment all the time and use their positions to manipulate people in the buildings, coaches, administration, etc. The sense of entitlement with certain members of this particular board are the worst I have seen. So if your waiting for us to thank them you are going to be waiting a very long time. Maybe the kid will turn out to be a hard worker, I don't fault the boy for taking the job, I take issue with the abuse of power and entitlement that wreaks in the air with certain members of the board that they feel it is ok to pull strings. The community does not owe you anything you volunteered willingly to take this position.

To 7:16PM ~~ Your last sentence states it VERY well! From what I'm told, the WOMEN on this BOE are quite demanding about getting their perks.

Anonymous said...

Any news on the BB gun brought to Athena today? Will the kid be roaming the halls next week?

Anonymous said...

Does the concept of "conflict of interest" resonate here? How about "nepotism" or how about "payback" or how about any other word to describe that from every angle this situation stinks! But the true problem lies in that Julia thinks that it is OK to use her connection to get what she wants. I guess it is "who you know" rather than "what you know"!

SCATS said...

To 9:19PM ~~ WHO you know always trumps what you know in Greece. Just like they want to know WHO you are instead of WHAT they can do for you when you call with a problem.

Wow, how did Julia's son get a summer job? I didn't see any summer positions and I am trying to get a family member a job. Funny how that works...

Anonymous said...

Let me get this straight. A paid job, given to a student that has many opportunities afforded to him already based on who he is, a job that was not posted to afford others the opportunity of even applying? If that is true this is again highlights the haves and have nots of the GCSD. I do believe that we have children of poverty ( not just money) in our community that would WANT this job and be successful if only they had the same opportunities as this young man. Shameful that this may be the case.

Anonymous said...

GCSD = NEPOTISM It's just that simple.

Anonymous said...

the fact that Julia would even allow him to apply speaks volumes about her character. As far as her thinking it through, if she had thought about it for one second, she would have known what the repercussions for her and her son would be. What her son's "friends" must be saying about him. Why did Julia's husband allow this?

"Friends" are popping up all over D.O. The superintendent's secretary and the newest female board member are BFF's.

To the person who continues to write-in ranting about how this BLOG is handled ~~ I'm DONE posting your complaints about me, the BLOG, yada, yada, yada. Take it to your own BLOG.

To 3:43PM ~~ Town Hall is worse!

To 5:20PM ~~ The bigger issue than being BFF's is that just about everyone on the BOE has some sort of GTA connection now. BEWARE GREECE TAXPAYERS!

I miss Keith Imon. What was his relationship to Walts again?

Anonymous said...

Who can I contact to find out if Julia's son really did get hired?

Anonymous said...

Folks, get real. This is how internships and summer jobs work. It was how they worked when we were kids, and it is still how they work today. These aren’t “real” jobs, and they’re not subject to the adult standards everyone is howling about here (like being advertised and openly competed).

Think back to your own childhood. Set aside the unregistered small businesses you may have run (lawnmowing, etc) since those aren’t jobs, they’re proprietorships. Focus on the jobs: filing papers at the doctor’s office, cutting wood at a construction site, answering phones for your accountant, etc. How did you get those jobs? It was your family connections.

That’s how it is, always has been, and ever will be.

SCATS said...

To 1:58AM ~~ You're the one who needs to "get real." Your comparison between working for a taxpayer-funded, public school district that is subject to many laws governing hiring, firing & managing its employees to private sector jobs obtained via "family connections" is a pineapples to pomegranates comparison! But then, you knew that ;)

So much for GCSD being an Equal Opportunity entity.

Keith Johnson (ahem) got his job by being "really good friends" with Steve Walts......

Anonymous said...

That's nice, but 3:16 asked about Keith IMON!!

Anonymous said...

Ha! Walts was really "into" Keiths (ahem)......And now for all of the ADs and PE teachers.....hired by the former head of PE.....no favoritism there, huh?! What a joke.

Well,

Anyone who thinks something improper was done can try to bring it up to the BOE at a meeting. But don’t be surprised if the rules governing real jobs don’t apply in this situation.

The fact that this is tax money (if indeed there is money involved at all – some summer positions are unpaid) doesn’t bring as many extra rules into play as you might think. Judges, legislators, and other public officials of all sorts have their temporary “training workforce” brought in by connections and paid minimum wage or less. Just think of Bill Clinton and his interns…

It would be a separate matter entirely if the kid is being paid district money without a corresponding properly budgeted line item. But I doubt that is the case here. Some small amount of money was probably allocated to be spent at the superintendent’s discretion, and this is what her discretion looks like.

But then, SCATS, you knew that.

SCATS said...

To 4:44AM ~~ No, I disagree totally. Show me any ad for summer interns in GCSD. I bet you can't.

You are in dreamland if you believe they created a line item in the budget for Van Orman progeny using the Supt's "discretionary funds." There are NO temporary summer jobs posted for GCSD aside from one reporting to the AWOL Director of Transportation. Any seasonal positions such as mowing lawns for B&G should be posted & made available TO ALL INTERESTED APPLICANTS, not just the children of the BOE Prez.

But then YOU knew that.

SCATS said...

Let me add to my previous comment:
Show me any EXISTING (or recently posted past) ad for summer interns in GCSD. I bet you can't.

We don't want DO wasting time making up an ad now ;)

Anonymous said...

Hi. 4:54 here. So, no one knows who I can contact to find out if Julia's son really DID get hired?

SCATS said...

To 8:06AM ~~ I would think this was a total no-brainer, but I digress. I'm thinkin' you should call ... (drum roll, please!) ... JULIA!!

Anonymous said...

No call needed...he did and so did another admins kid. Must be nice!

Anonymous said...

SCATS, you’re missing my point. There are no ads, and there are no rules requiring ads for this kind of thing. These aren’t real jobs, so big-boy rules don’t apply. I think I have been consistent in saying that.

Anyone who thinks otherwise should dust off their rulebook and go to a BOE meeting and ask the BOE why person X was hired for position Y in violation of rule Z. Nobody will do so, because no specific violation will be found.

People have a general sense that this is wrong (nepotism etc), but nobody can articulate a specific violation (who did what, when, in violation of what standard) in sufficient detail to compel compliance.

SCATS said...

To 2:19AM ~~ Obviously, you have NO clue about how our BOE operates & their "rules." If you did, then you'd know they DO NOT respond to questions asked by the public at their meetings ... unless it's one of their cronies/insiders asking the question ... then maybe ...

As for "no ads for this kind of thing" ... please explain in detail exactly what this "thing" is called. Then we can look up the rules. For now, the rest of us call it employment, hiring, job opportunities, etc.

Anonymous said...

Hmm… blog monster ate my previous attempt at posting this. New York State Labor Law §§ 650-665 Section 651(5) defines an “employee”, and includes 15 carve-outs (groups to whom the rules don’t apply). Trainees and interns are carved out.

SCATS said...

To 2:32AM ~~ There are no BLOG monsters, just a SPAM buckert that didn't like those special symbols. As for the "carve outs" ... I don't think for one single second that Julia is capable of coming up with that type of "excuse" to cover her or her son's derriere. I'm calling BS.

Anonymous said...

Well, sure, Julia might not know about this, but Babs probably did. Anyone who has passing familiarity with the general processes and paperwork involved in hiring quickly gets a gut feel for what hiring has to be done by the book, and what kinds of exceptions exist. The details can be looked up later as needed.

SCATS said...

To 11:29AM ~~ Oh puh-leeze!! As if this district ever worries about following any laws/rules/policies! It's a large part of GCSD's dysfunction!
