GCSD & Coaches Sued Over Hockey Fight

The victim's parents allege district officials “allowed and encouraged acts of violence and harassment by older members of the Greece Thunder hockey team (specifically Tyler Grimshaw) directed at younger, weaker, smaller, less skilled and/or less favored members of the team.”

The lawsuit alleges:
  • team coach Daniel Webb, asst. coach Erik Geller, and other school officials ignored a pattern of prior violent acts by Grimshaw, including his “rifling” hockey pucks at his team mates.
  • Grimshaw and the boy had an altercation in the locker room. Later, on the ice, Grimshaw allegedly slammed the boy into the rink’s boards. The boy left the ice and threw up.
  • Webb told the boy he did not have a concussion and “must have had a pre-existing illness.” However, a pediatrician diagnosed the boy with a concussion the following day.
  • negligence, infliction of emotional distress, violations of the boy’s civil rights and seeks $2 million plus punitive damages and legal fees.

The evidence against the District is overwhelming and incredibly well-documented. The District has no defense for a consistent pattern of supervisory neglect and the encouragement of a thug environment.
I hope this case finally brings down the thug culture of "winning" athletics at any cost in GCSD. It is time that the District is run by responsible leaders and not by the narcissistic power mentality of various "name-brand" sports parents and their A__ Kissing and very incompetent administrators.
If Greece has the money to pay Steve Walts for a lifetime of health care as a reward for destroying the academic performance of our district then surely Greece can find a way to pay for a vicious and ever-escalating assault on young students at the hands of thugs turned loose by their coaches in a systematic and long-term process of preying on smaller, weaker, and vulnerable kids.

To 8:54PM ~~ But now they want to do it on artificial turf under lights & in a stadium atmosphere, besides. Nothing is too good for our district's heroes (thuggers).

It will be interesting to see how much of the documentary evidence evaporates before discovery. Yes, the pattern of behavior is well-documented, but the school district is the custodian of most of those documents. Most of it consists of prior complaints by students and parents who have subsequently left.

6'2 250 I don't think the kid is even 6'2 right now let alone when he was in high school and his senior year football roster has him as 6'0 220 I think that height and weight is a little far fetched nonetheless

SCATS said...

To 10:09AM ~~ Your point ...?

If he is "only" 6 ft and 200 lbs, does it make him a better match to pound a 130 lb teammate into the boards??

When our board failed to take appropriate measures (like removing him) to ensure the district's kids safety, following previous acts of unprofessionalism involving the coach, they left the taxpayers hanging out to dry. If anyone thinks his history will not be called into question during this proceeding, your fooling yourself. They let us down then, in spite of the Supt.'s recommendation, and now we'll be footing yet another preventable bill. I hope every one of the BOE members who voted "yes" to keeping this guy employed is willing to step up and explain themselves. This team, and the disciplinary issues (or lack there of), were widely known back then. Once again we see where attempts to quitely sweep dirt under a carpet only go to bite the taxpayers in the a$$.

I thought hockey was a physical sport all players assume the risk of an injury when they step on to the ice, if your not physically strong enough or big enough then you should not be partaking in a varsity sport that posses so much possibility to get hurt.

SCATS said...

To 1:10PM ~~ There is a huge difference between a premeditated assault on a teammate and an accidental injury during play. Grimshaw wasn't an angel before this happened, and we've all come to see that.

Also, the ADULTS IN CHARGE OF SUPERVISING FAILED TO DO THEIR JOBS! That's another ongoing issue with Greece sports. Reminds me of the locker room sexual assault on the kid in wrestling several years ago.

Achromovitch wanted the coach responsible removed for his negligence while at a tourney. The BOE prez Ms. Julia wanted him reinstated because of her hockey friends. So she got what he wanted regardless of the what the super thought was right. Why do you think she loves miss BABS she doesn't give her any grief she lets the board call all the shots, right or wrong. Julia likes a coach we keep him even though he is a liability, great move , we don't like a coach because snowflake doesn't get enough playing time she orders a witch hunt to try and remove him. It s simply stated a huge over abuse of power on her part. She should be the one getting sued, since she is the reason that the coach was even still employed.

It was good of 1:10 PM to break away from their NRA handbook and the re-loading of their 30-round magazine for their AR-15 to do a post. Of course there are 8 grammatical/ spelling errors in one run-on sentence. So we know quite about the writer before we even try to fathom what thought process (lack thereof) he/she is trying to convey to us.
Perhaps the writer never drives a car because surely there are bigger and heavier cars on the road that could hit them and cause massive injuries. And road-rage drivers are out there also.
Grimshaw was a ice-rage player whose behavior was winked at by the district for a very very long time. Now it is time to pay for the immense damages that he was allowed to inflict on others.

Don't blame Julia entirely for this one. Others played a larger role. ACHROMOVITCH Originally made the right decision by suspending Webb. He would
later meet with over 100 parents on Sunday who demanded that he rescind the order. He stood his ground and was joined by Roger Boily who stated at the
meeting that he agreed with the decision and the order stood or did it? These people don't give up. This would lead to a meeting in Steve's office the afternoon of the following Tuesday which happened to be board meeting night. In attendance was Steve, Boily and Mike Sofia, from Rotary and a hockey supporter. The subject, rescind the suspension until after the State
championship series. Steve, to his credit, refused citing his contract which states that discipline of employees was his at his discretion.

At the meeting that night, a motion was made to set aside his decision and reinstate the coach. The board voted 9-0 to reinstate the coach. Of course this included Roger "the dodger" who was reminded by Rotary as to who was instrumental in getting him elected to the board. So, he abandoned his friend Steve and reversed himself from two days earlier and helped throw Steve "under the bus".

A while back there was some talk on this site about board micromanagement. The action taken that night by that gutless board went on to be that. By taking the
action they did, they literally TORE UP Steve's contract.

A former area Superintendant told me that that he and others, would have resigned at once. Unfortunately for us, Steve needed the money more than his embarrassing rebuke by the board at the expense of his creditability and reputation.

To 11:54AM ~~ I always said the BOE effectively neutered Achromovitch by reinstating Webb. But they did a second time several months later. He was ready to start the shutdown of West Ridge kindergarten due to lack of enrollment. Clearly, WR was on the path to implosion as the numbers per grade level shrunk, so this was a wise decision. Once again, our power hungry BOE intervened and held a lengthy "meeting" at WR where they sat there & took it while parents, students AND teachers literally wept and wailed into the microphone at them. It was one of THE MOST DISGUSTING EPISODES OF PURE DYSFUNCTION I've witnessed in my lengthy history with GCSD!!

To 12:13 AM. Evaporate? You must be a GCSD Administrator, who is suffering from wishful thinking. There is this thing called the Internet where documents reside for all of eternity. All you have to do is click "print" and the docuemnts magically appear. My understanding is that their attorney already has a mountain of supporting documents from numerous witnesses, such as parents who reported similar incidents to various GCSD employees. When you blatantly and continuously ignore the legitimate concerns of parents and students, it tends to upset people.

Julias aggregation over not having Steve do everything the board wanted was exactly why she started her campaign to drive him out. They should have let him eliminate WR kindergarten and fire the worthless coach. Now thanks to Julia we are stuck with a lying lame duck super that does whatever Julia wants. Both times it came back to bite Julia, Westridge basically closed and Webb wound up getting canned only after he let a student get injured followed by a nice fat lawsuit. BABS beware when you let Julia call the shots it usually does not end pretty. No worries though I am sure Julia will butter her up by giving her an excellent evaluation this month and giving her yet another big fat raise long with another extension of her contract. We can only hope that she does not get voted in as President again this year or the backscratching and favors will continue between these two woman at the expense of us taxpayers and parents.

To 1:55PM ~~ While I am arguing about whether others have complained, I will say I have witnessed myself how things "evaporate" from the internet, especially from GCSD's or the Town's websites. Look through the archives on this BLOG. This examples of links that no longer function, pictures that no longer exist, documents that can no longer be located, etc. are numerous. Just a week ago, maybe less, the pics of Babs that plastered GCSD's website suddenly evaporated!

SCATS said...

To 2:13PM ~~ It's too bad the BOE doesn't order a new background check plus drug & alcohol testing before contracts get renewed.

To 1:10 PM. Yes hockey is a physical sport with inherent risk, but that is not relevant to this discussion. Grimshaw has always had a habit of beating on much smaller players on and (in this case) off the ice. The coaches knew this, and "Green Lighted" his behavior. Late hits, dirty hits, rifling pucks at unsuspecting players, and assaults in the locker room were his modus operandi. That is NOT good hockey, it is simply cheap and dirty. If you really don't understand that, then I'm not sure what would help you get it.

SCATS said...

What I don't get is why he would go after his OWN TEAMMATES!?

Anonymous said...

Looking at this kids stats it looks like he did much more then just getting penalties. Must not have been that cheap of a player because it also looks as though he's never been suspended from a game.

Anonymous said...

You people give way to much credit to Julia. You really think she has the smarts and ability to control what the Superintendent does or does not. Personally,
I know better. For further proof of what BABS is like to work for, ask any of the growing list of administrators who have recently left for other employment,
what she is like if things don't go her way. Do you really think she would let Julia do her job?
Get real!!!

SCATS said...

To 6:31PM ~~ Do you REALLY believe that kids get suspended every time they deserve to be?? Interested in buying a bridge? I can make you a sweet deal!

To 6:59PM ~~ I've heard all about Babs' tantrums. Not a pretty sight, or sound ;)

Although this Grimshaw kid may not be an angel I did recently hear that The poor little picked on boy got into it with captains earlier in the season after he was caught smoking weed in the jv locker room. Looks as though this "bullied" kid is not all he claims he is either and may not be the perfect angel his parents portray him as.

SCATS said...

To 8:46PM ~~ I love how people try to turn it around on the victim and make it his fault. I bet what you "heard" originated with someone who is already in trouble. That's how kids handle this crapple.

The FACT REMAINS: Grimshaw beat up his own teammate. It's called ASSAULT. It's a CRIME. It's time he answer to the charges.

If you are upset about something the victim did, why didn't you call the cops & report it? Oh yeah, I almost forgot. It was something you "heard" ... ;)

BABS does do what Julia wants because she doesn't want to suffer the same fate as the former super. If she keeps Julia happy she gets to keep her job. If she doesn't she will suffer the same fate. They both enjoy the sick twisted power games they play with each other. Too bad everyone else has to suffer the wrath.

1043: It's no secret among those close to the fray that Julia developed a well
deserved dislike for Achromovitch . To understand this you have to go back to
when she was part of the Boily engineered conspiracy to hire this bum in the
first place. She was outspoken about her support for him initially. Her change
in attitude came about after she inherited the job as board president. She quickly found out what he was really all about during her meetings with him
as board president. She would quickly learn three things about Steve. He was
lazy and never prepared. He was an accomplished liar. Last of all and his
biggest hang up, having to be somewhat accountable to a female. Unless they were
in supine position, they were a nuisance. However by that time the majority of
the board had made the same conclusion and had no confidence in his ability to
do what was necessary to improve our flailing educational system and embarked on
a mission to try to embarrass him into resigning. Didn't work.
Julia now became the equivalent of that "woman scorned syndrome". She had egg
on her face for initially singing his praises only to be proven wrong by the
resulting facts and in her own mind had made a huge mistake and as they say "revenge is dish best served cold" and the vendetta began. In the end she would
win because the majority of the board voted to not renew his contract even
though a Roger led faction lobbied on his behalf to keep him on.
Some could make the case that her ability to deal with Steve carried over to BDW. I don't think so. Two different people. Steve was a mark and dumb. While
Deane-Williams is cool and calculating and used to having her way with
subordinates and school boards. In my opinion, Julia is no match for her and way
out of her league and is being played like a fine fiddle by a person with the
ability to enter the minds of those around her order to get her way. Julia is a
pawn in this game, trust me.

To SCATS and 1:55, I’m the original “evaporate” commenter. I live in a world where most documents, especially the sensitive ones, never get posted on the internet.

They exist in file cabinets, in desk drawers, and when in digital form they are on hard drives or in shared folders on servers. All of these can be, and routinely are, scrubbed.

Internet debaters need to remember that there is reality beyond the internet.

SCATS, to your question “What I don't get is why he would go after his OWN TEAMMATES!?”, the answer is because he could. If he went after the opposing players in a game he would draw penalties and his coach would bench him as discipline because penalties harm the team. But if he goes after “marked” weaker players in practice, on the team bus, and in the locker room then his coach approves because driving the weaker players away makes the team stronger.

Bullies don’t pick tough targets and fair fights to prove how tough they are, they pick soft targets with cover from higher or backup from their posse to prove that they can get away with it unchallenged. Bullying is not machismo.

SCATS said...

To 1:33AM ~~ I didn't intend to suggest that most or all documents end up online. But of those that do, evaporation is easy enough.

To 1:53AM ~~ I know about the bully mindset. I just couldn't think WHY a teammate would do it to one of his own. I hadn't thought about how it keeps the team stronger by driving away the weaker players. That idea is so repugnant, especially pertaining to HS sports! Webb should have been neutered long before he was.

Anonymous said...

To 1:33 AM: First off...why are you up so late?

Anyway, my understanding is that there is a line of parents and students/former students who have offered up supporting documentation that was previously forwarded to the GCSD, and is now in their attorney's hands.

You are correct that documents evaporate in some/many cases. Some GCSD administrators have tried to remove the need to delete or shred documents by just not writing anything down. In many cases they don't make any record of legitimate complaints, hoping that the problem just goes away. This is the modus operandi of many GCSD administrators.

Any functional organization requires its leadership to create paper-trails pertaining to both positive and negative events. The first sign of corruption or inteptitude in an organization is its failure to put things down in clear concise statements.

The difference here is that too many people have been hurt by their inaction and ineptitude...and these are people who do put things down in writing.

SCATS said...

To 11:17AM ~~ Some people work very late.

As for GCSD, you only need to look in the BOE meeting room to see the widespread dysfunction you referenced. Neither the BOE, (or their officers) nor the Supt. respond in writing to anyone!

Lower down the chain, I know of a case in dealing with a dysfunctional teacher this year where the parent was ordered by the principal "to stop emailing the teacher" about the ongoing problems. I wonder why??

This is nothing new for Greece! It's been going on for years.

I bet we can find some NYS employee making half of Tomasso's salary that could do a better job.

Think of that the next time you go to report an incident to one of them.
