Students Openly Ignore 'Code of Conduct'

Now that the weather is trending towards somewhat warmer temperatures, students walking to school or leaving the premises are taking their time. Without the cover of heavy coats, violations of the Greece Central School District's Dress Code are easy to spot. So are other infractions of the District's 33 page long 'Code of Conduct,' especially at the secondary schools.

Among recent observed infractions (even among students departing Odyssey School where District Offices are located) are the failure to:

"Insure that all underwear is completely covered at all times," the wearing of hats, coats & hoodies IN the buildings; wearing clothing adorned with chains or spikes; and  "possession of a skateboard on school property."

Why have such a ridiculously long, specific policy if no one bothers to enforce it?

GCSD needs to include Half a Million on the new budget for a Code Enforcement Squad. After all, teachers can't be expected to enforce it, they're "working" to contract.

Maybe Sweet Tyler can be brought back to run the Code Enforcers. Just think what he could do out there with his hockey stick.

Were you aware that high school students are allowed to swear whenever they want to and that the staff has pretty much turned the other cheek to it because the students have claimed it is their "1st amendment right" to freedom of speech? Ha!

On the topic of Odyssey...what happened with US News. The school wnet from #75 in the nation and #12 in the state to being unranked...

To 2:57PM ~~ It doesn't surprise me since I've heard 3-5th grade students exerting their 1st Amendment rights unhampered too.

To 3:19PM ~~ Because someone asked about that on FB, I looked at the report & found it has nothing to do with the changes made in the past year. It says: "We analyzed 21,035 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. This is the total number of public high schools that had 12th-grade enrollment and sufficient data from the 2010-2011 school year to analyze. (Nebraska was the only state that did not report enough data and therefore was not evaluated for any part of the rankings.)"

Obviously, the slide began well in advance of OA actually moving to a new location.

You can only doctor the test scores for so long before getting caught..

To 8:12PM ~~ I heard the order went out that NO ONE was to fail any Odyssey student related to report cards. I've always said the disconnect between Honor Roll lists & State Watch lists is that report cards are totally subjective.

I still cannot fathom how Odyssey went from 75th in the nation to not in the top 1000. Did they not submit some paperwork?

The Code of Conduct has too many rules, some of which are not worth the time to have as a rule, and are not enforced from the clothing, such as spaghetti straps, to the underwear showing because their pants are so far down they have to hold them up or walk funny, to the shoes or should I say slippers and maybe soccer flip flops since regular flip flops also aren't allowed. Oh, did I forget to mention the new Bullying Policy that teacher, staff & students had to take & has done NOTHING to change any of the bullying in the school...what a waste of time & money that is/was. They need to scrap it all & go back to the way everything used to be handled. Let us not forget that some of the kids know for certain that some kids swear daily & bring knives & drugs to school, have told the teachers & security knows of this too BUT because they have no solid proof they cannot check the kid so meanwhile when that kid gets mad & stabs someone then it's ok to bust the kid even tho someone else could now be DEAD or get another kid hooked on drugs because it wasn't ok to search them when they're a known druggie. All this stuff is so obsurd & yet the innocent kids have to walk around in this environment & be good & honest & not fall into the bad ways of the ones that are there. What about the pressure & the threats? If it's put on them for too long & too hard & all these adults know of this stuff, another kids going to be a victim & then that kid will be the one that gets in trouble for it. Something needs to be done!!!

To 9:09AM ~~ Oddly, I've gotten a large number of parent complaints this year NOW THAT WE HAVE AN ANTI-BULLYING POLICY! It's obvious that what has been DOES NOT WORK!! It's even more obvious that mainstreaming Special Ed kids sets many of them up to become easy targets/victims.

I'm concerned in reading your comments. Are you telling me that there have been one or more stabbings in Greece schools this year? Please explain.

To 8:57AM ~~ Odyssey wasn't in the top 100 every year anyway. Some years they made it, some years they weren't even close. It's all part of the hype that doesn't stand up to the light of day about a school where the REAL difference was in the fact they had a hand chosen student body accomplished through a secret lottery.

There's a good reason that colleges only use the ACT scores or the SAT scores for admittance. The student gpa are always fudged.

To 12:26PM ~~ Actually, that's probably not the case in reality. But what I know for sure is that local colleges are VERY aware of the games GCSD plays with the numbers. While touring one of the better institutions locally, parents were told to not worry because to ensure the students were on a level playing field, ALL incoming freshmen had their GPAs recomputed on the same scale to be fair.

I understand Odyssey is not in the top 100 each year, but to go from 75 to somewhere over one THOUSAND? Something is not right...

Babs your "Code of Conduct" policy is a joke!!! Do you even know what "Enforce" means??? It has been made VERY plain that neither you or your teachers know how to enforce anything!! Even the teachers at Brookside can't enforce the policy. We could not believe our eyes when we personally witnessed a STUDENT COMING OUT of Brookside Elementary and boarding the bus with their pants hanging past their butt cheeks and their boxers showing!!! We are sick and tired of this type of behavior being unchecked in ALL of the schools. We find it demeaning for the student, offensive and disrespectful to us, and sexually harassing especially for we female employees. Do something NOW about it before you find GCSD on Fox news!!!!!!!!!!!
