Bishop Kearney Charter Wants To Open @Hoover

Discovery Charter School seeks approval to move from its current location at Bishop Kearney's campus to the former GCSD Odyssey Academy building at 133 Hoover Dr. Classes would start next  fall.

According to the D&C website: "Discovery Charter School is an elementary charter that admits students via a lottery (non-discriminatory) and gives priority to children living in poverty. School officials have said they plan to add one new grade level each year, up to sixth grade."

Discovery Charter School has 160 students enrolled currently in kindergarten to 3rd grade at its Irondequoit campus. Their school day is from 7:30AM to 3PM with after-school programs held until 4:30PM.

"Non-discriminatory" but gives preference to low income. Why does that sound like it discriminates against children of average or high income parents?

You cannot claim to be non-discriminatory if you show favoritism in any way.

Basically it sounds like the polar opposite of Greece's "lottery", which gives preference to those of above average incomes and relatives of district employees. I agree this is great news for Greece!

I believe that is called reverse discrimination. I wonder if they take children that are behavior issues?

My understanding is that this school will be catering to Special Education kids.

And why is that your understanding, SCATS?

Related/unrelated story: Did anyone catch the story run an (I think it was wham 13) last night where the showed how a mother of two, making approx. $19,000 a year, who maximizes available benefits/entitlements, ends up with a lifestyle equivelant to an $81,000 income? It's not on the channel 13 website, but it was mind blowing! We are all doomed.

SAll kids are special; in Greeece, all thoase kids are above average. Check out the honor roll listings if you have any doubts.

So who will go to this school?

To 4:36 maybe you should attend school again and learn some grammar and punctuation. The kettle is black!

I tell you this is defacto discrimination if I ever saw it. So, the school will allow only low income kids and special education. How is it that my tax dollars should go toward that when it is discriminating against other kids? Either they allow all or they allow no one. I will not support the hand picking of kids regardless of the spectrum that they are picking from.

To 5:55PM ~~ If you live in Greece, you've been supporting it since 1993! Ever hear of Pine Brook, the preeminent school-of-choice?? ;)
