Greece Fires K-9 Cop, Sam Ross

Following completion of a police department internal investigation, the Greece Town Board fired Sam Ross, the K-9 cop. The firing came at the recommendation of Greece Police Chief, Todd Baxter. Ross is accused of providing alcohol to a minor on three different occasions.

The dog that trained with Ross will be returned to its orig. owner and a new dog & trainer will be sought.

SCATS ~~ KUDOS TO BAXTER!! This was the ONLY decision that could possibly retain the community's trust in GPD.

Scats. This might be a first. But I couldnt agree with you more

To 6:39PM ~~ I'm wondering where you were when a Greece cop caught a criminal in the act, arrested him back on Nov. 28th and I said it was a job well done for GPD ... ?

Ooops. My bad. I was on your side then too. Now if you could just give those poor firefighters a break

To 7:35PM ~~ A break from??

We still have two unsolved murders and two arsons. And 13 investigators in the department.

There is no substitute for 'trust' and 'integrity' for public officials. Mr. Baxter is doing what he said he would do - THAT should make us all proud.

To 9:28PM ~~ And an untold number of home burglaries, car break-ins, robberies, assaults & purse snatchings to add to the shoplifting at Walmart ;)

To Charlie ~~ He did this time. However, I can't understand how something so simple could take so much longer for the internal investigation to be completed than it did for the court to do their thing. They adjourned it Dec. 4th ... but then just maybe this was made "headline news" today to steal some thunder away from the march. I'm still wondering why it took so long to bring charges in that case against the one who posted the video ... ?

Attention Republicans: Baxter may be what you need to clean up the image you have created over the last few years.

When is the next local election? AH, NEXT YEAR RIGHT?

SCATS, I wouldn't be surprised if the internal investigation was on hold until after the other proceedings were completed. It is routine in a situation where multiple offices want to investigate something that only one investigates at a time, both to avoid overload on witnesses and so that each one can provide its report as a starting point for the next one. If this is what happened then it is only natural that the internal investigation is completed after the court processes.

Kudos my ass!!! Baxter only did what Auburger told him to do nothing more nothing less. Ross is a victim of Greece. Politics 101 and is the political sacrificial lamb He never had a chance. This socalled interal investigation was nothing more than a STAR CHAMBER ACTION. The result was already determined.
The off duty alleged indiscretions of Ross were irresponsible and an example of poor judgement on his part. Though these alleged activities if true called for some form of disciplinary action by Baxter. However, these yet to be proven charges in a court of law, do not rise to the situation requiring dismissal.
Baxter has an obligation to protect and serve. But he also has an obligation to stand up for his officers when politics interferes with his job. For this reason, I have lost all respect for this man as our police chief.
If any of you out there really believe this officer is being dismissed for cause, you are sadly misguided . It's simply a Public Relations move to misdirect the publics attention from the continuing problems that continue to plaque our town and PD.

To 4:32AM ~~ DREAM ON!! lol

To 5:22AM ~~ I don't think there was all that much to investigate for the court proceedings. He went to court, did his required program so that this little incident doesn't mar his record if he and now he must behave for the next 6 mo. Done.

To 9:51AM ~~ You may be right. However, IMHO firing this guy was the ONLY option. One incident could be called "a mistake." Twice could be called (by the liberal-minded) "poor judgment." But three times??? I'd say it was a pattern of recklessness on Sam's part.

I can't stand it when people refuse to take responsibility for their own actions. What Sam Ross did was wrong. Why support him? He deserved to lose his job. There are a few more at GPD that need to lose their job as well. And as for Auggie. He is a lame sitting duck. No one listens to him. If people believe that, they are smoking crack. He is sitting on his last days. Riding it out quietly.

To 11:01AM ~~ I agree that Ross needed to go and that Auberger's days are essentially done. However, he holds Baxter's purse strings ... so Baxter is still his puppet through the end of the year.

I think Officer Ross should have to reimburse the Town for the Cost of Training that dog!!! He can go work for Irondequoit PD now.

If anyone here feels bad for Mr. Ross, is there anyone who can articulate exactly what he's accused of doing to help set the record straight?

One glaring fact that is being over looked in this case is the fact that Ross was another one of Auburger's hires. Others of course are two of our three jailbirds, Joseph, Pignato, as well as Ball. Did I miss anyone?
My point is that the voters of this town not Auburger are ultimately responsible for the mess he created as supervisor. Simply put, no Auburger no problem.
To further prove my case, the Greece Republican and Conservative Party share in the scandals that have rocked the foundations of Greece running incompetents to run this town.
First they gave us Riley, Riley gave us Boiley who during his short stint presided over a corrupt building department, hired the infamous Chuck Schwab as assessor and Merritt Rahn as Commissioner of Public Safety and after he disposed of Phelan, made Rahn Chief. A blue print for what we are now living through and everything that led to the wheels falling off Greece.and the resulting fallout.
My hope is that the Feds have picked up on this pattern and Jackie boy and others could be headed to Club Fed to reflect on the havoc and destruction of the reputation of our once great town that used to be led by the likes of locals like Gordon Howe, Vince Tofany and George Badgerow.
Those were the days when Greece was the center of
Monroe County instead of the door mat we now have become.

To 1:54PM ~~ From WHEC-TV: "31-year-old Sam Ross is charged with unlawfully dealing with a child.

Ross is accused of giving alcohol to an 18-year-old on at least three different occasions. News10NBC has learned they met through social media and that it was *not* through Facebook. In the court paperwork, News10NBC learned that the two did have a "personal relationship."

That first sentence is the official charge against him. The rest is HOW/what specifically he did.

To 2:11PM ~~ Let's NOT forget that Ross works with Brian Ball and has for years at the Union Hill FD. Maybe Ball will give him FT employmment as an EMT once again?

And who was it that promoted Officer Ross to the position of K-9 handler??????

It certainly wasn't Auberger.

Anonymous said...

To 9:51AM, completely agree with you 100% on that. Baxter is just using Ross as an example to show the community how the "new GPD" operates. I also heard this kid lied to Ross about his age and had a fake ID showing he was old enough to drink, he was also arrested for possessing the fake ID which is a Felony in this state. Don't be so quick to judge Ross on the situation without knowing some of the facts! I think the only true victim in this case is Hunter.

Ball was hired under Riley by phelan. Ross is no longer with union hill and hasn't been active in over a decade

SCATS said...

To 3:33PM ~~ Was it actually a "promotion?" Yes, it was Todd.

To 3:58PM ~~ No matter how you spin it, the idea that a 30 yr old cop is "involved" with an 18 yr old male he hooked up with on social media is all kinds of creepy.

To 4:07PM ~~ Sam Ross is currently listed as a volunteer EMS with Union Hill. I'm sure Ball would help him out if he needs it. They watch each other's backs ;)

The union will probably grieve the firing and it'll get overturned by a labor arbitrator since the arbitrators rarely uphold a firing. Unfortunately, he'll probably be back on the job in no time. . .

SCATS said...

To 8:24AM ~~ That didn't work for Ball, though he did get a settlement. Ross could probably collect too.

What's this bug you have on Baxter?. It could have been .....
(you know, Joe from within!).

I believe Ball waived his right to an Article 75 civil service hearing and took the money instead. Ross has the same option if he chooses to fight the action of the town board and ask for a hearing . In fact, the board had no authority to fire Ross unless he waived his rights as Ball and Rahn did. A nuetral arbitrator will hear the charges and render a decision. If he find Ross guilty of the charges, he has the authority to recommend what kind of punishment hr believes is appropriate. That could range any where between dismissal and temporary suspension or reprimand However, the town is not obligated to. Accept the recommended actions and dismiss for cause because he was found guilty of the charges.
Ross no doubt knew this and more than likely decided not to appeal the action taken by the board.

To 1:24PM ~~ I have "no bug against" anyone. I just call 'em like I see 'em. In fact, I've given Greece cops/Baxter kudos twice recently - once for firing Ross. Baxter's ability to perform independently of politics is limited by the reality that Auberger holds the $$. It's as simple as that.

To 2:29PM ~~ You know Joe, your "signature" is your inability to hit "spell checker" first.
