McCann vs Helfer

Ready For Another Full Year
Of Campaigning Ahead?

13WHAM Reports:
"McCann is calling for a special meeting of the Greece Republican Committee after 33 new members were added in September. McCann claims their additions were “improper and unauthorized” and also that many “include Jerry Helfer’s immediate family, family friends, and the children and relatives of select politically-connected people.”

“They're really related to Jerry Helfer who is the Republican town leader there is also a number of people with the last name Reilich, and other people who are politically connected," McCann said in an interview Wednesday.

Assemblyman Bill Reilich, another person added to the committee, is also the Monroe County Republican Party Chairman.

"Clearly this is an attempt by a couple of political leaders in our community to try to control the Greece Republican Committee," McCann continued.

"I have to say I'm disappointed with the tact that Jeff has taken today,” Helfer responded. “I was with him as recently as last night's legislative meeting and he didn't express any concerns to me at that time."

Helfer said he believes all the rules were followed in appointing new members to the Greece Republican Committee because the Monroe County Committee’s bylaws supersede the town committee’s. He also said that the addition of new members is meant to bulk-up the committee entering a key election year where nine town-wide seats are up for grabs.

That committee’s membership stood at 97 before the 33 additions. A simple vote of the members in that committee this spring will likely determine the Republican Party’s nominee for the supervisor’s race next year. Both McCann and Helfer could be vying for that vote which could begin to explain this clash a full 51 weeks before the next election.

"Running for supervisor is something I'm thinking about definitely,” McCann acknowledged. “But to me this is a bigger picture this sends a message to the community about how the Republican Party operates."

"It is something I'm seriously considering,” Helfer said of a supervisor’s run. “I've been meeting with Greece residents talking to family members and friends, political leaders, to take a look at this as a possibility. I have a great love for Greece I served on the Town Board for twelve years, but I feel we can do an even better job.”

McCann's Letter To Helfer

Greece Republican Committee Rules

SCATS ~~ Mr. Helfer, you did NOTHING for your ward when you were on the Greece Town Board!! So doing ANYTHING would immediately make your performance "better."

Mr. McCann, so you don't like the taste of what the Auberger regime has been dishing out?? Imagine that!!

Really Jeff.....someone should do the same kind of "connections" list of people hired by the town during the Auberger years....at one time didnt Robach's wife and all his children work for the town? Boo Hoo!

SCATS said...

To 12:50AM ~~ As far as I'm aware, Robach's wife still works for the Town. She got that job shortly after Robach had a little run in with someone's fist, if I recall correctly.

That was the day Joe"Came out of the closet" and had to wear sunglasses for over a month, even at night!!

To 6:03AM ~~ Yup! I had to laugh when I saw that Robach's calling his campaign to collect coats for seniors "Closet To Closet" this winter. I'd think he'd want us to forget about it lol

QUESTION: Every time the topic of candidates for Greece Supervisor comes up, I see remarks about how Auberger can't run again. WHY NOT?? On the Town's website, I see terms limits posted for Town Ward/Board members. I see NOTHING about any such limits for Supervisor. Can someone explain this and maybe provide a link or tell us what document this lil nugget is contained within? THANK YOU!!

I happen to think a primary would be a good thing for our town. I would love to hear what candidates think of giving tax breaks for retail outlets like those given for restruants at the mall or how they feel about supplying the 'total compensation' cost for a position under their control rather what is happening now by talking about just salary.

I can't remember the date but this provision was stipulated the year Auburger convinced the board that the supervisor position needed to be a four year term instead of the traditional two that had been in place for years. This happened at the same time term limits were placed on board members and there happened to be two Democrats on the board coincidentally .

Thanks to the person who emailed the link to me regarding the Supervisor's term limits. You can see it here:

Just when we thought it was safe to turn on the TV after the presidential crap, next year we will be subjected to more political nonsense. Actually in this case Iam looking forward to it. It will no doubt shape up as entertainment.

The wheeling and dealing will now begin. McCann will be bought off by getting a county job as will Morris.Antelli is the only one who will force a primary unless he is given special considerations He is the only one of the three with the money to run a primary.

To 1:53PM ~~ I'm already enjoying it! Too funny to watch the "insiders" b*tch about the exact same things we don't like about how our local electeds run things and treat us ;)

This is so funny... I can't get the smile off of my face.
Jeff - you made your bed and now you have to sleep in it. HA HA HA!!!

These guys have been on the public employee dole for their entire careers... Jeff especially is scared spitless because he could never make it working in the REAL world and he's run out of political options. He's not fighting for the people, he's fighting to stay in the ivory tower as a public employee.

This is exactly why getting into politics is so dangerous... when you lie down with dogs, you're bound to get fleas.
Poor Jeff... If he played his cards right, he could have gone quietly to a job at the Water Authority. LMFAO!!!!

Fat chance MccCann gets a county job now. Morris already has a county job. Antelli's a legislator which is as far as he goes. Plus he's been wasting his old man's money for years and probably doesn't have much left. McCann is dead to the GOP. Political parties don't reward those who break ranks and attack the political organization. Just ask the Lightfoot guy and Jose Cruz who challenged Dave Gantt. Gantt went after them and everyone who backed them. There's lots of people at town hall who used to support Auberger for fear of losing their jobs. I wonder if McCann is threatening them to force them to take sides with him in the upcoming political feud. I agree with those who say Jeff will switch back to being a democrat. Question is does Morelle take the damaged goods back into the family...

To 9:15PM ~~ I'm smiling with you LOL

Is there any better place to start than to ask any and all their thoughts on the recent appointment to the water authority job? Is this the republican party you want to represent?

All these assumptions that Jeff McCann will switch to a Democrat. He may just do that but doesn't mean the Greece Democrats will have him. They have their own list of qualified Supervisor candidates including former County Legislator Dick Beebe, former candidate for town board Rita Garretson, former Supervisor candidate Dan Maloney and former County Legislative candidate Jo Meleca-Voigt.

Their leader Dave Garretson posts here a lot. Mr. Garretson, if Jeff McCann were to switch parties and want to run as a Democrat for Greece Supervisor, would you and your party consider him to be your candidate?

Let's clear this speculation up right now.

To 7:37AM ~~ While I get your point, I don't see that the other three named people have a better chance than McCann would, should it come to that. I also know that reality doesn't necessarily translate into the Greece Dems doing what they need to do (back NcCann in such a scenario) to win an election either. Greece is such a messed up town politically.

Anonymous said...

Garretson is not going to back McCann as he is running his wife for that spot. Silly people.

I see a Helfer that is the spokesman for the Sheriffs Office, are these guys related? I have also been told there is a Helfer that is a Lieutenant in the GPD, also related maybe?

Greece GOP drama update!

The squeeze is on over at town hall. McCann sent letters to Greece employees telling them to sign a petition to kick the people off the Greece republican committee who don't support him for Stupidvisor.

Helfer sent out an email claiming McCann is lying to the committee and that all committee members are valid. He says McCann never called him about these people and instead went right to the news media.

We'll keep you posted on all the gossip news that's fit to post!

SCATS said...

To 9:11AM ~~ If the Greece Dems want to LOSE the election, his wife will be their candidate. I suspect Donald Duck could run against her & win, sad to say.

To 11:08AM ~~ I believe they are related ... brothers, if I'm not mistaken.

To 11:39AM ~~ Did McCann threaten them with job loss? Or is that threat just implied, the way Auggie does it? Isn't that an inappropriate communication to Town Employees, threat or not? Or are ALL Town employees screened to be certain they are registered Republican rubber-stamping bobbleheads before they get hired?

7:37 Surely you jest!! Qualified candidates??? HoHo All loosers not one qualified to run for Animal Control Officer let alone town supervisor Beebe couldn't hold on to his seat on the county leg last year. Previous administrative experience, Mayor of Homer New York population 1200 and that's on Saturday night when they hold their weekly square dance. Maloney? Only the Greece Democrats would be stupid enough to run a UNION leader in the town of Greece.

What is being over looked in this fight are current town employee patronage jobs. Under McCann most all would be continued in their present positions. The same would not be true with Helfer.

Helfer would no doubt bring in "His" people to fill key positions. All Auberger appointees would be replaced as the new faction of the Greece GOP would appoint their supporters. Patronage jobs is the name of the game in this town as well as the county as we all have witnessed recently and in the past. This poliical philosophy will never change in this county.

Current town job holders know this and that is why Jeff is looking to them for support. Survival is a powerful instinct . McCann is smart to take advantage of this fact. There is a lot more at stake than who the next supervisor will be. The year 2013, could be both interesting and entertaining for sure in the town of Greece.

To 9:34AM ~~ You make a great point! Self-preservation trumps most everything else.

Dave Garretson said...

Hello, Dave Garretson here.

To those who feel the Greece Democrats can do a better job, I agree. We've won a few contests, and been "close but no cigar" on some others. The Republicans enjoy built-in advantages stemming from their decades-long domination of Greece. Their starting line is halfway down the track. Today Democrats are the underdogs, but eventually we will win.

We are currently reviewing our candidate line-up for 2013. I won't discuss our potential choices here, but I'll offer this. If you know who might be a good candidate for local office, I'm listening. Call me -- my number is in the book.

Next fall, when our slate is making their case to the voters, maybe you will lend your voice to support them, display their signs on your lawn, or even donate your time and/or money to their cause.

It's true, we won't have perfect candidates. Guess what, the Republicans won't be perfect either. If you want change, you'll need to vote for it, even if it isn't exactly what you envisioned. Pick a side.

Anonymous said...

Well Dave, I interpret your email as Jeff McCann is an option since you did not rule him out.

Interesting that you'd possibly consider a party flip-flopper over one of your own loyal democrat party members.

If you run McCann you and the Greece Democrats will show the people of Greece that you're no better than the republicans you accuse of being closed, clubby and corrupt.

Anonymous said...

Pick a side." Aren't we already divided enough?

Anonymous said...

McCann cannot keep current employees in their jobs when he switches sides and runs as a democrat. Do you honestly think Joe Morelle and Dave Garretson will allow republican employees at town hall keep their jobs? Joe and Dave will want to stock Greece Town Hall with their our democrat political workers. Joe and Dave arent gonna give Jeff access to their campaign cash and campaign workers and not expect something in return. Think people!
