Greece Schools & Town Cancel Scandals

Due to the oncoming Frankenstorm called "Sandy," Greece Town & School District officials have put a morataorium on scandals for the rest of this week. They realize that Sandy will grab the headlines, no matter how hard they try. It is expected that "business as usual" will return to Greece by Monday Nov. 5th ... and so will the scandals.

A Parent's Plea For Advice ...

Anonymous said...

this might be a loaded question, but I am actually looking for some advice.
I have a soon to be 6th grader and they sent a letter asking which school we would select, if available.

Is there any difference?
I can't relocate and private school is not an option.
Really looking for some help from the community.    10/26/2012 9:08 PM

SCATS ~~ My choice would be Odyssey if only because I think that school's principal keeps somewhat more order in the building which results in less uproar, fewer fights, etc. By all means AVOID OLYMPIA!

Other input is welcomed, but PLEASE keep it helpful, folks.

Dear Babs ... Olympia Provides Sub-Par To Deplorable Education

Anonymous said...

Dear superintendent,

As i sit here contemplating what my educational career has come to, i am reminded that i chose this career because i thought that i could make a difference in the lives of children. I also thought that this profession was respected and admired, but i have quickly learned that it is neither. Teachers today are nothing more than a punching bag for right-wing beaurocrats who, to further their agenda, would sell out their own mothers for a quick buck. The left-wing democrats are no different pushing down our throats regulation and testing to justify thier own messed up school reform efforts, not realizing that any reform takes a minumum 3-5 years to show any results. When you have messed up a child's educational life, @ 13 yrs, you are messing with almost half of their learning. Mess that up and you have lost those children. BW, i recall when you were promoting the school consolidation efforts that that you specifically stated "we are doing this for the children and we teachers must work through this process for the sake of our children". Chris Sloan also sstated that we are " flying this plane as we build it". You are messing with the lives of children. There will never be another 7th or 8th grade for most if not all these kids and the education they are getting is sub-par at the most and deplorable at the least. When you were thinking this through i know you did not have the best interest of the students in mind, all you saw were dollar signs in closing down schools. Teachers and students a stressed beyond the normal stresses of schools. All the teachers are teaching in multiple rooms, sometimes with other teachers in the classroom trying to maintain and fulfill their professional responsibility. Planning time for most teachers is nothing more than an escape from what has become "hell" in the classroom. Teachers are asked more and more to give up things so as to meet the demands that regulation has placed on us and also the conditions you have placed us in. Why is it that i must work in these conditions but yet expect that my results be better than ever before? Did you not think that something would falter with these consolidations? What is happening is that the morale of the teachers and students is terrible. I am a prime example of what has become of your experiment. I hate going to school not because i hate the kids, but because i hate the conditions i work in. The kids hate coming to school because they hate the conditions also. I see their anguish in their eyes. Ironically the opening day speaker spoke of building relationship. How can you build relationships when you have no rooms to build those relationship? This is what i see happening with you. You will probably get another contract only becuase those idiots on the board have no clue about the situation at the schools. You will probably be lauded for saving the district money, and you will probably take the credit for any student success, if there really is one. You will then go on to bigger and better things on a national level and probably write a book on school consolidation pimping your own successful consolidation process, all the while the students that you hurt will be struggling to make sense of what became of their "free and equal education" under the law. Did you forget that students are entitled to a free and equatable education. And that any variation of that is denying a student their basic civil rights. Why is it that a child in the olympia school is getting a less that equitable education than the students at athena and arcadia? I hope you are aware that you have opened yourself and the district up for litigation should a parent ever decide that your actions and the actions of the board constitute a civil right violation. Maybe even a class action suit brought on by many parents. Your only hope is that these parents lay dormant enough so that you can accomplish your goal.

Sincerely a very bitter, sad and depressed olympia teacher    10/23/2012 9:39 AM

Greece Cop Hurt Following Candy Heist

A Greece Police officer and a suspect are both in the hospital. Investigators say it all started with a man stealing candy from a gas station.

News10NBC was there when the officer and suspect were put on stretchers and taken to the hospital.

Police say the man stole some candy Tuesday morning from the Hess gas station on West Ridge Road. The officer was responding and spotted a man who matched the description on nearby Fetzner Road. When he stopped him and started questioning him, police say the man started fighting with the officer in the street.

Captain Brian Uhrmacher said, “An officer doesn't know from one day to the next what he's going to be dealing with and the unfortunate part of this whole thing is this individual chose to engage an officer in a physical confrontation over some candy that was stolen.”

The officer and suspect have some cuts from the scuffle. The suspect also complained of chest pain. Both men are expected to be okay.

Farmer's Grant Promises Improved Student Outcomes

The Greece Central School District submitted a grant application to America's Farmers Grow Rural Education Fund sponsored by the Monsanto Corporation to help farmers positively impact their communities by supporting local school districts in building their science and math programs.

Greece Central School District was selected as a $10,000 winner to enhance math and science education and only one of 6 winners in New York State.

The resources from this grant are going toward purchasing the most advanced graphing calculators in the world. The Texas Instruments Nspire hand-held calculators and the Nspire Navigator wireless system will ensure improving student outcomes through investigation of real-world problems and mathematical modeling.

The District has received funding for enough handheld calculators and the training required to integrate this instructional technology effectively into the classroom for more than 200 students at Olympia High School.

Students will use the calculators as a real-time response system that allows teachers to quickly assess their work and adjust instruction. This advanced system will allow students to make connections and model real world problems using algebraic equations.

SCATS ~~ Wowie!! If I'd known all it took was a little more $$ to buy calculators to get ensured and improved results, I might have supported more funding for technology! Can't wait to see the skyrocketing outcomes at Olympia! They might even rise up out of the basement in the county rankings! Oh wait ... it doesn't say how many years it will take before the "magic" happens ... nevermind ...

Greece Cop Bought Teen Drinks

WHEC -TV reports: "The court paper outlining the charges against Greece Police Officer Sam Ross is filed at Irondequoit Town Court. The "accusatory instrument" (as it's called) says Officer Ross gave alcohol to the teenager at at least three locations in the month of August.

Ross is facing the misdemeanor charge of "unlawfully dealing with a child."

According to the paper work, Officer Ross gave the teen "two drinks containing Diet Coke and Crown Royal Whiskey... while at an undetermined location in Irondequoit Bay."

(***Note: the teenager's name is redacted on the court document***)

Five days later, the paper work says Ross gave the teen "two drinks containing Citron Vodka" at Tilt Night Club on Central Avenue in Rochester.

Two days after that, the court document says Ross gave the teen "two drinks containing grape Vodka" while at "Shumway Marina."

The same document says Officer Ross had a "personal relationship" with the teenager.

Officer Ross is suspended with pay while the Greece Police Department conducts an internal investigation. He has been a police officer for seven years and has run the Greece Police's K9 unit for the last year.

Ross is scheduled to appear in Irondequoit Town Court October 23rd."

This addition is expected to significantly reduce police costs for prisoner watch overtime pay.

Wife Swap Star Pleads Not Guilty
to Prostitution Charge

YNN obtained court paperwork here that shows her side of the story back on August 27th. In her statement to State Police that night, Guastaferro said she did agree that for $500 to $70, she would have sex with Rochester attorney James Doyle.

And on that night, indeed according to police, she was found half-naked in a car with Doyle at the Pembroke Thruway Service Area. She allegedly had some drugs on her person. She's also accused of giving troopers a false name, though she later admitted that it was fake.

Guastaferro's attorney, Dan Killelea, tells YNN simply, Alicia doesn't remember any of this conversation with police. The attorney did not want to go on camera.

Meanwhile, James Doyle, for his part, spoke with YNN back in August, and he expressly denied there was any arrangement for sex with Guastaferro. He says they were just in the car, they were tired, and so they stopped at that Pembroke Service Area to rest.

Guastaferro had no comment Tuesday. She's due back in Pembroke Town Court on December 11th.

Sam Ross & Brian Ball: The Connection

Of course there's NOTHING to see here folks ...

Just because Greece Police Dept's ill-fated former Sgt. Brian Ball happens to be Chief of the Union Hill Fire Dept ...

AND ... just because Chief Todd ran all over Greece when he was first hired as Greece Police Chief telling everyone that "Brian Ball will never work for Greece Police again" ...

AND just because current/suspended-with-pay Greece Police Officer Sam Ross used to be the Deputy Chief of the Union Hill FD where he is still listed as an EMS Volunteer ...

Doesn't mean Greece PD is still tainted by ghosts from Merritt Rahn's (and John Auberger's)past. Nope. Couldn't be ... ;)

I WONDER WHY NONE OF THE OTHER LOCAL MEDIA MADE THIS CONNECTION???

Mall Theater To Hold Video Church Services

WHEC reports:

"Northridge Church will be opening its second campus on Sunday October 7th at 10:00 AM at the Regal Theater in the Greece Ridge Mall.

The church currently meets in Irondequoit on the corner of Saint Paul St. and E. Ridge Rd. and will continue to hold services there, but has decided to expand its walls by opening a second campus at the Regal Theater in Greece.

"Instead of expecting people to come to us, we have decided to take the church to the people. In our culture today the movie theater is the postmodern well. It is where the community goes - what better place to have a church service." said Campus Pastor Nate Miller.

The service will be identical to the one held in Irondequoit except the sermon will be delivered via video. There will be live music and Campus Pastor Nate Miller will lead the service. The only thing different will be watching the sermon on the big screen.

"A lot of churches are slowing dying, ours is thriving - and we are excited about taking Northridge Church to Greece!" added Nate Miller."

DCN Candidate's Night

Voices From The Empty Chair

clint eastwood talke to rnc chair for 2016 president campaign

Unless you haven't been paying attention, you are probably aware that Clint Eastwood spoke to and questioned an empty chair at the Republican National Convention. That chair was supposed to represent our President, Barack Obama, who of course was not invited to the Republican's Convention.  The Democrats had a field day poking fun at this tactic after the fact.

Next week, YOU are invited to come out to see some potentially empty chairs "speak" at the Dewey Corridor Neighborhood Group's Candidate's Night.  While I credit this group with making the effort to try to get the candidate's to come and take unvetted questions from the community, I take issue with the opportunity they provide to allow "stand-ins" to do the talking for those who seek election.

Will you come out to see Slaughter & Brooks respond to your questions? How about Robach & Reilich (who told Republican candidates to boycott this event entirely last time around)? Would you still come out if you knew it would be Maggie's PR person, Reilich's office manager, Robach's secretary and/or Louise's "chief of staff"? A waste of time, right?

With more than a week before this event is held, I'm hoping the organizers come to their senses and INSIST that candidates must show up, or remain unheard. I'm not up for a night of empty chairs ... or suits ... or heads ... and I don't think most in the community are either.

DEWEY CORRIDOR NEIGHBORS PRESENT:
