Bullying Continues on Greece Bus

D & C Editorial:

"Last week, my 13-year-old grandson got on his bus for his first day of high school in Greece and had trouble finding a seat because the bus was so crowded. He didn’t know anyone on the bus and sat beside a girl who was sitting alone, and she yelled at him, “This is my seat!” and shoved him off the seat and into the seat opposite.

Of course everyone laughed, and now he doesn’t want to get on the bus again. The bus driver did nothing about the situation.

Last year, my grandson walked almost two miles back and forth to school because of the obnoxious behavior of kids on the bus, and things don’t seem to have changed in spite of all the publicity and the new “no tolerance for bullying” policy. How disappointing."

GREECE

SCATS ~~ This is the same story that WHEC-TV (Ch. 10) pulled (without explanation) from their website yesterday afternoon. Oddly, the story was hyped via Twitter by their reporter telling everyone to look for it at 5 & 6PM on their newscasts ... then BAM ... story pulled.

I was told by another person that news trucks were spotted at Greece's Transportation Bldg. yesterday. Unless or until I hear otherwise, I'll assume that Greece Central managed to say the right verbiage to get the media to not air this story, once again. The shame continues, only now we've spent loads of $$ "training" busdrivers who still do NOTHING!

Just an FYI ~~ My private message to the Ch 10 reporter was ignored!

this child may have been bullied before and is thus terrified, but I do not think the incident reported, of one girl pushing him for sitting down constitutes bullying, It is just bad behavior

Scats, I suspect I have a different operational definition of bullying that you. I would say the student refusing to allow the other student to share the seat is guilty of selfishness, "poor playing in the sandbox", loud behavior, but for me, bullying is verbally or physically abusing someone to diminish them and their self esteem in front of others. Telling someone that you won;t share a seat is mean, and it needs to be addressed by those in positions of authority, but not sure it's bullying. This might fit the fringe of my definition, but is your definition that different?

SCATS said...

To 12:51PM ~~ So "bad behavior" is tolerable by the driver? The kid should just put up with it?

To 12:53PM ~~ What is your point?? I'm not the one who used the word "bullying" in this. That was the grandparent's word choice & the newspaper's headline.

If you want my definition then I will tell you that KAREN KLEIN WAS NOT BULLIED!!!!! Taunted? YES! Jeered? Absolutely! Poked at? Indeed! But she was NOT "bullied." To be bullied, you must be the "weaker" person. As an employee, she was supposed to be in charge, but chose to defer her authority by doing nothing!

Obviously, that girl feels ENTITLED to decide who sits with her. The driver seems uninterested which pretty much communicates that the KIDS ARE STILL IN CHARGE ON THE BUSES!
DESPITE TRAINING< BULLYING IN GCSD CONTINUES!

How do you know the driver even saw anything, if a girl just said that he couldn't sit there and wasn't screaming? I agree it is just a girl being rude and displaying bad behavior. I don't think it warrants a 14 year old boy's grandmother to write an editorial. I am sure that particular girl as well as many others here in Greece and other districts have this same mean girl attitude. It doesn't just happen on teh bus, I am sure she acts like that at home as well. To blame the driver for not intervening is rather a stretch, considering he probally did not here here tell him not to sit there. He is a 14 year old boy... he could have said something to teh girl if he was that upset by it. I don't think granny has to contact the media that a teenage girl wouldn't share her seat. Is she going to fight all his issues for him? She didn't hit him, shout vulgarities at him, taunt him, that is bullying. Now that his grandma went and wrote this letter he probally will get picked on and get bullied. Sad but she didn't help the situation.

To 3:16PM ~~ I know MUCH more than this editorial summarized because I had the FULL STORY (and still do) from Ch 10's website yesterday. Based upon that report, the driver knew. You need to pay attention to details before you go spouting your opinion.

The driver of the bus is IN CHARGE of what happens on that bus! It is THAT simple. The kid was already singled out, touched inappropriately, laughed at & humiliated. Except for a video, he was every bit as bullied as Klein was.

That girl had NO RIGHT to not share her seat. SHE was out of line & needs to be dealt with. Otherwise, the message becomes that the kids are still in charge.

I DID see the original story on Channel 10 website. The only way YOU would know the real story was if you were on the bus. The grandmother or the boy never reported the incident to anyone. You have no idea of knowing what can be heard on a bus with all those kids unless you were on the bus. I hardly think telling a boy he can't sit in the seat next to a girl is even remotely close to what Karen endured. Did you ever think there was a reason that the story didn't air? Maybe the grand,a realized they didn't follow the proper procedure if he felt he was truly being bullied, like reporting it to transportation or the school? You just assume it was because someone got to them....you give them way too much power

To 4:21PM ~~ If you really did see it, then please share with us what the reported verbal exchange was between the boy & the driver :)

SCATS said...

By the way, it's NOT the Grandmother's or student's job to report the problem. It IS the bus driver's job!!!!

I too have a copy of the cached article. To be clear the grandmother says the boy has claimed that the driver told him to "find a seat". That does not mean that he said it...it is possible but again this is the version from a 3rd party not even on the bus.

I find it odd that a child that has been bullied in the past and has waled 2 miles to school because of if would now CHOOSE to get on a bus again. If my child had been truly bullied and the GCSD did nothing I would never put them on the bus PERIOD. I call a bit of BS on this story.

If this did happen as the boy has claimed THIS IS NOT BULLYING. Kid can be mean and cruel however not every occurrence rises to that of a bulling charge. When parents and student come to term with what the difference is then maybe we can have real effective reform and consequences.

SCATS said...

To 6:26PM ~~ Why are you working so hard to discredit this kid? Just because you "find it odd" does NOT make it odd! I call "a bit of BS on your story!" For the record:

WHAT HAPPENED TO KAREN KLEIN WAS NOT BULLYING! To be bullied, you MUST be in a position of weakness. She was an EMPLOYEE and she had OPTIONS. She CHOSE not to use them. She is more accurately called a doormat, than a victim of bullying.

If you really want to call BS on something, then let's go back to the beginning of Klein's story where she claimed she had written reports on these boys previously. Try FOILING that info. I'll bet you that no such document exists ;) This "employee" failed to report the incident that became world famous ... until ORDERED TO WRITE IT UP BY DO days later.

By the way, I'm fairly certain that the grandmother involved in this incident in the editorial is the SAME as one of the parents who threatened to sue GCSD back when Odyssey first opened ... because of discrimination against other secondary option kids who couldn't get bussing. THAT might very well have something to do with why GCSD got the story stifled ;)

SCATSm, you are correct. You did not use the term bullying, except in your headline title. We thought you had identified this as bullying, when others did that.

SCATS said...

To 7:16PM ~~ OMG!! In almost 7 yrs. this is the VERY FIRST TIME anyone told me I was "correct!" I'm soooo excited, I can barely take it!

FYI, the headline is a shortened version taken from the story, too ;)

Im OP at 6:26....I totally call BS on the KLIEN story. SHE FAILED to do her job. I have posted here before that she was rewarded fro doing nothing! She as the adult allowed it to happen.

Anonymous said...

i see no problem with the driver stopping the bus and telling the girl to let the boy sit. It is still not bullying. In contrast Klein seems bullied by a gang of kids, Despite her postion of authority she seems unable to use it effectively or to defend herself. That is why she was right to quit or it was right to force her to quit.

Don't be so hard on yourself, SCATS. This blog isn't known or its genteel nature. Even the blog master gets sarcastic responses

BIG PICTURE: the kid deserved a seat and was denied that.

The girl got away with shoving him out.

The onlookers humiliated the kid by laughing.

The driver failed to do his job just like Klein failed to do hers.

Greece Central failed to get employees trained and students made aware of policy.

Different year, same sh*t.

I'm so disgusted that adults would argue against this young man. What did he do that was so wrong? Siding against his guardian doesn't help him or any other kid faced with the same dilemma. He was put in a no-win situation. If he doesn't take the seat after the driver tells him to sit, he can be disciplined right? If he tries to sit, he gets shoved out and laughed at. No wonder Greece is ready to be flushed. You people make no sense.

SCATS said...

To 8:13PM ~~ What you are saying is that Greece Central employed someone who was UNFIT to perform the duties of her job. She was taunted, jeered & poked THAT is NOT "bullying." That's playing victim. It's part of Greece Central's dysfunction.

To 9:54PM ~~ Yup!!

To 10:37PM ~~ I agree. As you pointed out, he was put in a no win situation. The driver should be brought up to speed ASAP. The district should make that girl publicly apologize to this boy.

Anonymous said...

I'm 42 now and grew up in the district, and 30 years ago, I too made the choice not to take the bus while I was going to Junior High at Hoover and walked a few miles every day for a few years until I got to high school and things weren't so crazy.

If this crap is still going on 30 years later, they need to fix it. Put video cameras in place on the buses and have the Vice Principals at the school periodically review them. And kick the troublemakers off the bus.

This is fixable, but everyone has to do their part.

SCATS said...

To 12:31AM ~~ They have to WANT to end it. Apparently, they don't. In GCSD, they are more worried about inconveniencing the employees than with providing a safe learning environment.

Obviously Sweet Tyler Protective Service wasn't employed by any of the weenie kids parental units. Had a STP thug been active that girl would have arrived at school being dangled out the bus window. STP agents don't care about gender. We don't hit women, we kick em. More distance for the same amount of energy expended.

Oh sure, you can save a few bucks not hiring STP, but when your kid grows up a sniveling woos will those savings be worth it?

STP because your kid didn't man up over the summer. Who knows, after little snivel sees a Protctor in action your kid might just realize his own potential and carry a brick in his lunch box.

The story was pulled because when questioned granny admitted she didn't report the incident because it never happened. But because this has happened in the past , she decided to write the letter to the editor. this per a channel ten reporter.

SCATS said...

To 2:48PM ~~ Sorry, but your story is not creditable given my interaction with Ch 10.

Anonymous said...

2:48 is accurate, SCATS..sorry. You can't always win. Why don't you call granny since you seem to think you have the inside scoop and ask her, she will tell you herself. You don't always have the latest and greatest info. But then again you wouold NEVER admit to being wrong, so we won't wait for that to happen, just the usual stab at a sarcastic remark trying to stand by your point. Call Channel 10 and ask yourself why it was pulled I am sure they will tell you. And if you already have as recent as today say why don't you post their response?

SCATS said...

To 3:23PM ~~ Why don't you admit that YOU are 2:48PM? lol

The fact that you FAILED to provide the name of the reporter that gave you this "scoop" says it all ;)

Anonymous said...

Wrong again Scats , I am :2:48 3:23 ihaveidea who that is but we have one thing in common THE TRUTH. The truth that obvious comes from employee's of channel 10 Besides you some times forget the contents of your numerous posts. on a posting by you that seems to have mysteriously disappeared from this thread, you stated that channel 10 refused to answer your request as to why they pulled the story, What lengths are you willing to go to prove your self infallible .

SCATS said...

To 4:44PM ~~ Re: "Besides you some times forget the contents of your numerous posts. on a posting by you that seems to have mysteriously disappeared from this thread..."

BS!! It's right where it has been since first posted! I'll be awaiting your heart-felt apology, but not holding my breath ;)

Anonymous said...

WOW ,!!! I WILL APOLOGIES WHEN YOU ADMIT YOU ARE WRONG. OK.?? C'MON PROVE TO THAT YOU REALLY MORTAL. THAT WOOSHING SOUND YOU HEAR IS THE SOUND OF YOUR CREDIBILITY HEADED SOUTH . YOU ARE DEFINATELY LOOSING IT IN A BIG WAY.

SCATS said...

To 6:37PM ~~ Even though YOU were wrong yet again, save your energy & learn to spell "apologize" instead, OK?

So far you have FAILED to show I'm wrong about anything. YOUR OPINION is different, but it does not make my posting "wrong." If you ever give me something with solid proof that I messed up, I will of course admit my mistake. But don't lose a lot of sleep over it because I'm very careful with what I post, the words I use, etc. Your ASSumptions keep getting the best of you ;)

You are like a ferral cat when backed into a corner scratching clawing and screeching . Case in point a cheap shot at a typo in my factual comment that you had no viable answer because I am holding the high cards because my informant is proof enough for everyone but you. You on the other hand have only rumors and speculation in your hand.

HONESTLY, I BELIEVE IF CHRIST HIMSELF CAME DOWN OFF THE CROSS AND TOLD YOU YOU WERE WRONG, HE'D GET AN ARGUMENT FROM YOU .

YOU DEFINATELY NEED PROFESSIONAL HELP AS YOU HAVE DEFINATELY ESCAPED FROM REALITY..
AND ARE WAY OUT THERE I'M SURE OTHERS WHO READ YOUR RANTS AND RAVES HAVE DRAWN THE SAME CONCLUSION AS I HAVE.HAVE A NICE DAY AND GIVE SOME THOUGHT TO MY SUGGESTION WHILE THERE IS STILL TIME. BY THE WAY, YOUR CLEVER WAY OF BY PASSING YOUR OWN EDICT REGARDING NAME CALLING ON THIS BLOG WAS AT BEST CHILDISH ON YOUR BEHALF AND A FURTHER INDICATION YOUR GROWING PROBLEM.

Whether or not you post this is of no consequence as I was only interested in responding to your remarks so that there would be no mistake by you that I understand your psychological profile completely as I have had some experience in that arena.

To 9:54AM ~~ Obviously, I've REALLY gotten under your skin. You are taking things very personally, not good for your already fragile health.

You can come down off your mountain & cash in your "high cards" because learning to read body language & learning to analyze someone's writing are TWO TOTALLY SEPARATE SKILL SETS. You are no mental health expert, period.

Here's my escape from reality:

"Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
A little high, little low
Anyway the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me, to me"
