Thanks to NY Workman's Comp Law, whoever the Town of Greece's Comp Carrier is pays.

NY Worker's Comp, generous to the bottom of your pocket.

I applaud Chief Baxter for his public participation in such events. This is a guy who "walks the walk" and is out there donating his personal time and making himself accessible to the public. In the past year, I've seen him in the dunk tank for Hunter Resch Foundation, cycling for the National Law Enforcement Memorial, phone dialing for Crimestoppers, and who knows what else. Tonight he will be the emcee at the Night Out Against Crime Dewey Family Festival. I suggest that SCATS readers seek him out, shake his hand, and thank him for his efforts.

To 12:24PM ~~ But that only covers a portion of the toll. Last time Greece's top cop was on leave for an injury (Rahn broke his wrist), it caused our Supervisor to lose his memory!

To Dave G. ~~ The dunk tank probably isn't as risky as the boxing ring! Seriously, he could get injured.

Why can't we just bury the past and move on. Dredging up past incidents is counter productive for the future of our town. I agree with 12:25. Baxter should be praised for his volunteer work . I'm sure he knows the risk, but seriously speaking this is an exhibition and not a grudge match so the likelyhood of being hurt is marginal at best. As far as who pays if you mean his salary, the town pays. He has a contract with a yearly salary and sick time is included if he gets hurt. As far as his health care, the town provides him with health care which would take care of the costs.
As taxpayers, it will not cost any more than we have already paid for this years town budget if the worst happens. Relax for God sake, let the guy have some fun while at same time putting forth a positive image of our town and police department.

I'm sure the very slight risk of injury (what could happen? a broken nose at the worse?? not likely) is worth his participation in this event or any similar event. He probably has a higher risk of injury just driving into work in the morning. If we always worried about 'injury' we would never do anything or go anywhere.

I wouldn't want to see him get hurt, but it might be amusing if this stunt backfired and he got knocked cold. Another great headline to boost Greece's image.

Well said, 12:58. We really do need some positive things said about our town and the people who lead it. I can imagine that there would be folks commenting negatively if the Chief never came out of his office, worked an 8-hour day and never appeared in public. I agree that when I have met him and neighborhood watch picnics, a church breakfast, he has been open, frank, and an excellent spokesman for the town and the police dept.

SCATS said...

To 3:33PM ~~ How do you know he was open & frank? How did you check that out??

Anonymous said...

Scats why is just the mention of Todd Baxter makes you nuts?

Anonymous said...

Scats- How do you know he wasn't? where you there and if you were, would you have 'checked it out'?

Anonymous said...

Oh, for heavens sake, SCATS, give it a rest, will ya?

Scats, I used the same judgement I would use when I am on a jury. When a person is being overly cautious about the answer, has long pauses in the answer, appears nervous and uneasy, one can suspect they are not being truthful. When a person answers questions in a comfortable manner and is not trying to change the subject, I get more comfortable with their response. What rules do you use, other than "if their lips are moving, they must be lying"?

SCATS said...

To 9:13PM ~~ I'm usually very skeptical until I am able to see a pattern that puts a person's words & actions onto the same page. If the words don't back the actions, there's usually a problem.

I've met the kind who "answers questions in a comfortable manner and is not trying to change the subject" ... I think they just might be very skilled and comfortable with lying.

Such predictable people on here. SCATS mentions Baxter and the badge bunny cheering squad runs to his defense. He isn't God, but you people act like he is. It's dangerous to be that trusting.

One sure way to tell if someone is truthful or not are eye movements when responding to a question.

To 6:55PM ~~ Why do your comments ALWAYS land in the SPAM folder??

To 7:28PM ~~ Another comment from SPAM ... do you even understand what you are asking?? I don't.

To 12:44AM ~~ Very true!

To 10:40AM ~~ I agree again, unless they are a skilled liar. In that case it might require a person skilled in reading such body language to know.

Baxter should arrest SCATS!

12:24 You don't whatyourtalking about. He would only be covered if he was injured on duty. This event is not sanctioned by the town and he is not considered on duty therefore W C does not cover him. His health care provider will pay.

SCATS said...

To 6:31PM ~~ I agree. My question about "who pays" though has more to do with what happens if the Chief were MIA for several weeks with an injury. Do we need to hire an extra person to make up for the loss? Can he do his job via webcam in a hospital bed? Do the three Capts take turns playing top cop??

To 5:36PM ~~ For BLOGGING over the speed limit???

Anonymous said...

No, for creating "pollution." {g}

To 9:59PM ~~ That's not his job. Call the DEC ... and lotsa luck ;)

In that case, the supervisor under town law, is considered to the Public Safety Commissioner. therefore, he has the authority to name an acting Chief. It Does not necessarily have to come from the rank of captain. The only additional cost would result in the acting chief would be entitled to being compensated at the chief's pay scale.
I know you don't want to hear this ,but it's in theirUNION CONTRACT!!!!!

This morning I ran into the chief at a local eatery. We chatted briefly and the subject of his upcoming pugilistic contest came up.He jokingly said There goes the nose!!
I gotta tell ya, I hadn't seen him for some time, but he has definately bulked up and it appeared he has been doing some lifting. He looked great!! I wouldn't be concerned so much about him but if I were the other cop, I would be a little concerned about my welfare.

SCATS said...

To 1:48PM ~~ Sorry, but I don't share your optimism regarding his prowess in the boxing ring. In a recent interview by 13WHAM, he stated: "I've been boxing for about 4 weeks now. It's going to be a fierce competition." His opponent stated: "My dad started me boxing back in 6th grade" and he said he has kept up with it his whole life. I'll be betting my money on Peters ;)

typical response from the Cat.meow , if I knew who you are I'd take that bet. Now you are an expert on boxing? Can you back that up.? is there no end to your being the absolute authority on everything. What an ego trip.

To 3:14PM ~~ Of course I can back up the quotes, which are the basis for my opinion. The link is:

Once AGAIN, it was much ado about nothing on here!

SCATS said...

To 9:08AM ~~ Really? How do you know? From what I can tell, Baxter must have lost. None of the media sites tell us who won.

Anonymous said...

Well, I *DO* know that he was not seriously injured as was first suggested on here, so from an insurance standpoint we escaped unscathed, I guess, huh? To repeat what I posted earlier once again it was "much ado about nothing."

(Awaiting your snarky reply....)

Anonymous said...

I'll tell you who "won".... the CHARITIES!

SCATS said...

To 2:53PM ~~ Just because you say so, doesn't make it so ;) Avoiding telling us who won shows how in the dark you really are.

Anonymous said...

Why are you so hung up on "who won"?

SCATS said...

To 10:21PM ~~ Hung up? Hardly. But after 2 full weeks of media HYPE, you'd think someone would tell us the outcome. As I said, I'm assuming he lost or we would have heard otherwise by now ;)

Baxter is a warrior. He was doing very well when Scott Peters injured his shoulder and the fight was halted. Win by default - that's why it hasn't been publicized I guess.

SCATS said...

To 11:27AM ~~ Ahhh ... so the possibility of an injury wasn't so far off-base after all. Thanks for the info :)
