Beware The 5-Year Water Meter Read ...

Recently, a meter reader from the Monroe County Water Authority stopped by and asked to come in to read the water meter. Since his visit was unexpected and totally out-of-the norm (it's been many years, going back to when the Town of Greece turned things over to the County, since anyone has asked to come inside to read the water meter), I questioned the reason for it. He said, "I'm here to do the 5-year meter read." I pointed out it's been well over a decade since anyone else had done so and I asked why now. He pointed to a printout that shows the Monroe County Water Authority last came in our home to read the meter in 1999. I told him that it's 2012 now ... 13 years since the last visit, not 5. He said they are "working to catch up."

I can't help but wonder if this magical math might be related to Maggie Brooks and an attempt to "clean up" behind her administration in the event she wins against Slaughter ... very odd. Has anyone else been visited?

Yes they left a card in my door requesting that I call in a 5 year read. I read the meter called it in and I received a bill with a $20 credit.

The influence of Greece Central's math program has reached far and wide. There's nothing suspicious about doing a 5 year meter read every 13 years, is there? hehehee

To 10:47PM ~~ Your story doesn't wash. The "card option" I was given was to have them contact me to set up an appointment for when THEY could read the meter. THAT'S the PURPOSE ... for THEM TO SEE THE METER ... after 5 ... er, uhhh, I mean 13 years.

10:47. You haven't read your own meter before? We get the card through the mail every 3 months and read the meter and call it in. You can send it in too by mail. If you did that on a regular basis , why did you get a credit this time? Were you reading it incorrectly for the last decade every 3 months?
So you haven't done this in 5 years? Do you get an estimated bill and this is the reckoning of that? How many others were just getting billed with perpetual estimates? It is possible they were reading it because of that. Maybe some people ignore the card that comes every 3 months and just let the bill be estimated.

To 12:54PM ~~ The interesting thing is that MCWA has done ALL my reads (remotely) over the last 13 years, because my meter isn't easily accessed. The young man who came to my door CLAIMS that MCWA reads everyone's meter remotely (using that black box mounted outside your home) every 3 months. So then I asked that if that's true, why ring my doorbell now? He said they had to read the meter directly, that they are "catching up" on doing the 5-year actual reads.

I still think Maggie is cleaning up her messes in case she wins the election. We all know the Water Authority hasn't had such a squeeky clean record either, right? Just my impression of things ...

Yes I do call in my readings every 3 months. My meter is in the basement so I call in they read since we are never home when they come to read the meter. This card they left was different, it was an orange color and on teh top it said 5 year read. When I called and inquired what the 5 year read was, I was given the same answer they were catching up and trying to get accurate reads and usage for the overall population. I found it rather strange but I will take a credit form the county any day over a stiff bill. I was never told to call and make an appointment for someone to come read my meter, just the different looking card with the same instructions to call in as I do every 3 months. Seems they have different rules for different people. Shocking!

To 2:26PM ~~ The orange card was what he offered to me for making an arrangement to set up an appointment to have the meter read. I didn't really look at it, since I permitted him to read it the day he came to the door. Interesting ...

My house and my mothers house was visited. They told my mother that they have to check the serial numbers that they have on file for your actual meter matches their records to ensure no tampering has occurred. I know the numbers they recorded didnt mean anything because I received my email to submit my quartly meter reads as usual to them. If they actually took a "real" read why wouldnt they of just produced a bill with that meter read they recorded that day.

To 3:01PM ~~ Never try to mix efficiency with govt! ;)

I don't get a card. I have one of those little black boxes on the front of my house and someone just drives by and zaps it and then i get a bill in the mail. This has been going on for years.

I would not let anyone in my house unless they could PROVE they were from the MC Water Authority. Too many scams going on out there and i would be afraid i would be robbed or worse. Just saying.

To 4:54PM ~~ I agree about the need to be cautious. And that is exactly what I have, too, - they read from outdoors every month. The only reason I let this fellow in was a friend called me a day or two prior & related their experience with this to me. They called MCWA to verify they were in fact doing 5-year meter reads after 13 years. I was prepared, so to speak though I didn't think they would come to my house since we don't do any of the reads.

A meter reader comes to your house and it's Maggie Brooks' fault? I can't even begin to follow your attempt at logic.
Did he/she get dropped off by a silent black helicopter?

To 8:11PM ~~ Thank you for proving beyond ALL DOUBT why people keep re-electing the SAME SCANDAL-RIDDEN, CLOSED, CORRUPT, CLUBBY politicians time & time again around here. You couldn't be further out-of-the-loop (of news) if you tried.

So Maggie cleans up mess; Louise gets Washington to pay for it. Your choice!

Or much ado about nothing. Keep up the good work!

It's all about water theft folks!
That's right Mr & Mrs America people steal water!

People have become so damn accustomed to the Water Authority not walking in and inspecting the meter regularly that many people reverse their meter to water the lawn or fill the pool.

Confirming the meter read is just an accessory function of detecting broken or missing meter seals.

To 1:20PM ~~ I'd buy that idea IF they came in & read the meter at our house more than once in 13 years ;)

Stand by SCATS Sandy baby is part of the plan.

MCWA will compare actual reads with consumption by neighborhood, there are meters in underground bunkers that have been installed over the years. At this time the actual household reads are being done in areas where the neighborhood meters show large volumes of water are not accounted for by house consumption and can't be accounted for by leak detection equipment.

The thinking is by catching a hundred or so and prosecuting hell out of them in a high visibility environment the rest of the water stealers will reconnect their meters and become honest. MCWA will also prosecute civil cases against all water stealers detected. They are considered easy wins and very $$$$ rewarding to the Authority.

To 3:09PM ~~ Aha! Now that almost makes sense. Thank you.
