Some BOE Meeting Highlights

  • Greece Central School District Loses 150 Enrollments To Moves Out-Of-District from May To June
  • Babs Gets Two Additional Years Added To Contract
  • No "Residency Requirement" Placed On Supt. By BOE*
  • BOE Adopts New Math Text For Grades 6-8
  • BOE Ignored Policy 6431 Yet Again, But Julia Openly Lied About It**

* Babs' orig. contract required her to BUY A HOUSE IN GCSD, not to live in it after the purchase. So, is she off-the-hook for buying a home in Greece?

** Julia claims the BOE attended to that aspect of the Supt's contract changes, but THERE WAS NO DISCUSSION AS PER: "The Board will discuss and report the projected costs of such contracts in open session and the projected costs will be recorded in the official meeting minutes."

What a farce that was! Does Julia really believe that she is smart? How do you not ask the cost of implementing a new textbook series and vote on it onthe spot. That is unconscionable to the taxpayers. Here are the questions to ask:
How much?
What are the results from the other districts?
What other competing programs are available with similiar results? Nothing was asked other that "that was a great presentation"! WAKE up people! Itis your money out the door.

She blantantly threw the adminnistrators under the bus, as did Palas with the communication issue.

Palas can't divide 22 into 78. "that is 5 or 6 teachers"! No wonder no one wants her.

And the cherry on the cake is that the residency issue is not an issue. They went back on their own requirement on the residency issue. We know what pocket the board is in.

To 9:43PM ~~ Maybe we can take up a collection to buy a new math book for Ms. Pallas ;) lol

The Swami's predictions were a. Little off but not by much. I had predicted a one year contract extension. She got two instead. I predicted a 10 percent raise in salary. Here I was not off.By waving the residencing requirement that was worth more to her than any monetary raise.that would be taxable income. Not buying a house in Greece was priceless as she will not have to pay all costs related to such purchase and move, but more importantly she won't be subject to the tax burden associated with Geece residencing.
My crystal ball failed to take into consideration the fact that she is already wealthy and the rescinding of the residency requirement was worth much more.
I can only conclude that when negotiating the terms of her original contract, she reluctantly agreed to that provision and decided to deal with it later on which she successfully did last night . You got to give her credit. She knows her board and is much smarter than them collectively. They've been had and manipulated by a cunning individule who for the past year has managed to lull the entire bunch of them to sleep as well as subservient to her style of governance .

Looks like the predicted exodus has begun. there will be a lot more by September. Guess whose's replacing them?

SCATS said...

To 5:40AM ~~ I'm not convinced yet that this is her only perk given last night. I agree with how you define the value of it except that she was NEVER REQUIRED TO MOVE TO GREECE! She was only required to buy a house.

In the end, it is clear that our BOE chose yet another dishonest supt. not much different from her immediate predecessor, Steve Achramovitch. How can you know she's telling a whopper? Her mouth is moving ;)

Why is it that by law, the School Board is the "Boss" and the Supt is the only employee they have, yet for many, many years, the BOE has ended up working for the Supt?

SCATS said...

To 11:54AM ~~ It's a game they play to attempt to keep people from blaming them for what they do.

So strange to see all the principals of the elementary buildings today, covered with the same tread marks. Those marks looking quite like the tires of a bus. Not one teacher I spoke to was given any help looking elsewhere for a job. WHY are we letting CP tell these OUTRAGEOUS lies and get away with them????

SCATS said...

To 12:19PM ~~ Maybe because the Supt. & BOE are so skilled at it already? The Supt. apparently told us a whopper a year ago in an interview shortly after she was hired about how she & her hubby were actively looking to buy a house in Greece. Last night, BOE Prez. Julia told another whopper about how the BOE attended to policy details before approving Babs' new contract extension. Immediately after that, Julia ignored the fact the SAME policy applies to MOA's.

WHY WOULD A GREECE TEACHER NEED HELP FINDING A JOB ELSEWHERE? We've been led to believe that GTA members are amongst the best & brightest available. Seems to me they will be offered a plethora of jobs in other locations ;)

(Oops! Were we told ANOTHER whopper about our teachers, too?)

11:54 You are correct. She is the school boards only employee and is accountable to them. She also has a contract, there's that word again, that spells out the terms and conditions of employment. It also spells out the authority she has to govern the district given to her by the board and State Education Department rules. However at their discretion by majority vote of the board has the authority to direct her to take actions deemed necessary for the welfare of the district. But most of all, as their employee, they have the right to question decisions she makes by way of clarification and justification of decisions she makes so the district stakeholders are kept fully informed of the the implications of her acts. It's their job! Unfortunately, members of this board apparently consider it a mortal sin to raise questions in this regard.
They actually have convinced themselves that to question her actions is a form of Micro Management by the board when infact it really is one of their prime functions as a board. IT'S CALLED OVERSIGHT!! Have you noticed the fact that collectively and individually they never ask questions. Some of them appear to be mutes. The result is a quickie town board type meeting with each board member armed with rubber stamps and are adjourned in less than an hour
the 07' audit severely critcised boards prior to 05' for behavior that this board has embraced.I am sure the next upcoming audit will again react negatively to the last three boards for their failure to provide an effective means of over sight over district operations.
The last board that took it's oversight obligation serious was the HMO board . A board majority which by necessity at times crossed over the line of board - Superintendant duties and indulged in micro management as it was the only was to correct the enormous problems we were confronted with left by the inaction of previous Superintendant controlled boards.
I fear history is about to repeat itself unless this new board starts functioning in an effective responsible manner for the people who gave them their trust and that they would do the best to protect their interests in the school district.

Today Lonsberry hailed the superintedent and board for fighting the PILOT program for the Greece Mall. Hats for that one thing they did do right.

He also thanked the board for right-sizing the teaching staff and torched the teachers and their union for being out of step with reality.

Really this post and many others blaming teachers for all the short comings in education is so far off track. To compare a teacher to a mechanic or repair man is apples to oranges. The "item" being fixed is not black and white when it is children. While I agree that we should not have to volunteer to have good results there is nothing wrong with community involvement.

It is obvious that many people and perhaps older generations are not aware of the many problems that are in schools today. I do agree that if you where to volunteer in the schools you would see the various issues that present and perhaps the sole blame would not be mis-placed on teachers. Parents have to much power when it comes to discipline or the lack there of. To expect that teachers are miracle workers is not a solution. To hold ALL stakeholders accountable would be a start to better education. Translation that means STUDENTS PARENTS AND TEACHERS...and for the parents and students that choose not to buy in set up an alternative school...I predict the results would be there!

To Joe ~~ How are we to trust any of them when lies are being told by all?

To 3:22PM ~~ While I'd like nothing better than to take COMIDA to task, I suspect their stance against COMIDA is really just for show. They are doing nothing with teeth in it. In the end, it's just the legals who will benefit from their actions.

To 4:22PM ~~ It seems to me that if teachers, administrators, etc. really wanted parents and other community members to volunteer in the schools then MAYBE they should STOP BLAMING PARENTS FOR ALL OF THE PROBLEMS. I'm still waiting for a Greece teacher to tell us a couple of things that really are the fault of the teachers. The crickets are singing again ...

Anonymous said...

4:22 I will try to avoid your obvious "class" distinction and how you may compare apples to oranges but what you are really saying is that teachers are a more valuable class of workers. Back to the issue which is competency and efficiency. Let's say that the person we are talking about is a private counselor or private tutor or party planner so we stay away from repair people and mechanics which you think have such an easy day of work without stress of performing with results. The 3 examples all deal with areas that are not "black and white" as you so aptly categorize in your little world. What if they delivered an efficiency rate of 74% ??? I would not keep them around either. I would not recommend them to others. Stick that in your pipe and reply. Teachers are given a pass when they do not deliver the goods. It is always someone else's fault. The society, the parents, the building, the students stealing services from other areas of town. (Even if those kids do come from the city, you should still be able to teach them.) And don't get me going on about airline pilots. Is their world black and white? Apparently teachers and principals are the only ones that should be excused for graduating only 74% of the students from high school.

Carol Palas..... There are three types of lies, lies, damm lies and statistic! And you were able to tell all three of those lies yesterday. Congratulations.

To 5:50PM ~~ She deserves another raise ;)

If i were to tell the stories from GCSD to people they would think i am making this stuff up, but i am obviously not. Yesterday's dog and pony show as the teachers calll it was just that, a show. A comedy with very bad actors. The lead actor, Babs, plays the part perfect in that she says all the right words at all the right times with absolutly no regards to her actions, which speaks otherwise. Julia, the director, loves her star pupil, but has yet to truly challenge her talents. The remainding board members are really as clueless as Julia. As in a previous post in which their actions are being questioned, i agree. The hard questions are never asked and what happens in the same ole , same ole. Truly disgusting!

Joe, I agree that it Is up to the new members to reign in the current crop of incompetency. Maybe the kodak guy can see through their false bravado that is displayed on the board. The only one that asked a meaningful question to CP was McCabe but he didnt go further. He should have asked more questions on the total numbers that are closer to 40 rather than 29. Maybe he didnt want to embaress her with her incompentence but she does a good job herself. Simply by lieing when asked about the communication to the pricipals shows that she has no clue what is going on. All her answers are " go to the consolidation site" . You put the answers there, you should. know them when asked.

5:25 comparing a child's brain and make that 24 unique individuals to one teacher, to that of and air conditioner that has a manual and instructions for repair is what I was referencing when saying apples to oranges.

My children are successful in school yet they have peers that unfortunately are NOT...yet both students have the same teacher....so to say it is the teachers fault is clearly not accurate.

to 3:22. The BOE is ONLY challenging the PILOT program because they know that the drop in tax revenues from the Mall will require then to raise the required (loss in) taxes from the homeowners and that in limited to 2% by the tax cap. They are fighting for their financial life (like the rest of us!). If it were not for the tax cap, the BOE would fall in line behind the Chamber of Commerce and be good little soldiers, simply passing on the tax cuts to the Mall to the only ones who don't have a defense support system- the residents of Greece.

SCATS said...

To 6:42PM ~~ Your example really doesn't serve to exhonerate the teacher. Here's a real life situation from several yrs. back. In an intermediate school in Greece (grades 3-5), teachers at a certain grade level regrouped for math choosing to divide up students to teach them based upon their ability. The teacher with the average kids was known to have had the worst performance in the entire district that school year when it came to state tests, yet a few (very few) students did well. How does this happen? The parents of the few realized their kids were not getting what they needed in the classroom, so they provided outside resources (tutors, help at home, etc.) to ensure their kids learned the curriculum. Clearly that teacher FAILED to do her duty! Clearly, the few were capable of being taught and able to learn ;)

All I can say is that you need to make sure you keep this blog site going because the tricks of the trade she is famous for is to convince the BOE that the public does not have there facts right compared to her and she turns purple in the face when questioned. She is known to threaten people and always, always says when trying to prove she is right is "people have said " or "they have said". There are no people and there is no they, don't believe her she is a liar and is out for herself and she will destroy anyones career along the way. So did she fly the BOE to Reno in exchange for the house? SHE HAS USED THAT BRIBE IN THE PAST

6:42 Why did you bring up air conditioners? Airline pilots do not fix air conditioners. Would you like them to be able to land 74% of the time successfully? It sounds like you are saying it is ok for some of the children to not learn because they are not as high IQ as your darlings. So the 26% that do not graduate at Arcadia should just blame themselves. Would you think it is more fair for the teachers to have all children of the same IQ in each class to expect results that are exceptional? And anyway the 74% graduation rate was not for one classroom of 24 individual child's brains. It was across the board for the seniors at Arcadia. Many teachers and principals and counselors and a system (or lack of one) are to blame for that.

Why should she buy a house in Greece when her dream home is already built in Lyndonville. She loves it there so much she donated a new flag pole and score board recently to the school. Not exactly sure why she left Lyndonville if that is where she is settling?? Very confused on what her main goal is in life.I think she is too!!

I was in Waterport last night. They're still celebrating Babs going to Greece.

To 8:56PM ~~ Now, now. I'm sure there's been no bribes. Our BOE are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure THEY aren't held accountable.

Joe Moscato said...

Scats: Idon't exactly know who are you are including when you make such a broad statement as they all lie.If you are referring to the administrators, then that narrows it down. Then I would be inclined to agree with that statement in some instances. However if you are including the members of the board as well ,then I must take issue with that part of your claim. Why, because in order to tell a lie one must say something he or she knows to be untrue. Since members of this board with one exception the president, never say anything they are incapable of telling a lie, at least at meetings.
There are lies and ther are lies. Lies intended to deceive and with hold the truth and there are of of omission in which the truth is with held unless some asks a specific question of the presenter in regard to the subject matter In this case, the presenter is counting on no one asking the right question. Now pressed a truthful response is given. The point here of course is the question if asked, relevant topic information will be purposely with held and full disclosure is avoided.
One thing I quickly recognized when elected to the board was the district had it's own version of the DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL policy. The only info they would give us was what thet wanted us to hear. In order to get the whole picture you would have lean on them a little, sometimes with a knife lol.So we developed a I'm from Missouri SHOW ME attitude . I t worked well as they knew they were not going to be let off the hook by giving us " the short version. Unfortunately, our present board members are content with the district's " short version". Therin lies the problem and the intended lies never get exposed and the truth remain elusive.
Once the Superintendant recognizes this complacent attitude by his or her board it becomes very easy to with hold relavant info and slip items thru with relative ease.
Remember this fact.Job one for every Superintendant is to read the board members strengths and weakness and used them to her advantage. Inorder for any Superintendant to be successful she must have control of the board or at least the majority. Absent this, nothing she wants will never happen. Unfortunately it's the way the game is played.

Joe ~~ In reference to Julia's claim that policy 6431 was followed, THEY ALL LIED: The BOE Prez., the BOE VP, the rest of the BOE, the Supt., the district clerk and anyone else in that room who SHOULD KNOW what GCSD policies are. Julia told a whopper. The others sat silent, but I'm sure they knew she wasn't being honest. To claim otherwise would be admitting they don't know their own policies!

This situation is a lot like those who held their tongues when Merritt Rahn, Nick Joseph et al were running & ruining GPD. They knew what was wrong, but no one had the guts to speak up.

Joe said...

Scats I disagree. I would bet the farm that all the current board members just at one time or another glanced at the policy book during their tenure. They depend on the board clerk to interpret policies during meeting s Unless she points out policy discrepancies or some asks it is not likely to happen.

SCATS said...

Joe ~~ While that may be the case, then it is their own fault! It's not like this policy hasn't been made an issue on here & even in the BOE meeting room numerous times in the past year. If a BOE member hears discussion about a policy and doesn't know what's being discussed, then they are being negligent & should be removed from office. Julia ought to resign for telling this whopper Tuesday night, too.

What law firm notiated babs contract? Achramovitch got his extended in hamburg and Harris beach was the firm. Achramo is terrified of new hamburg boe member, Sally stephenson, so he has Harris beach come up with a new contract which was voted on by the outgoing boe on June 12. One member voted no.

SCATS said...

To Concerned Hamburger ~~ I have no idea. The district has failed to post her contract online. The only reason we know anything about it because the media posted what her original contract was 1 yr. ago.

To hamburglar...the contracts have to be revoted if at all by the end of June in Greece as well as your area. This is how it is done in this state. "terrified" gives a very vivid image.
