"Greece" Fireworks Rip-Off

A full-page ad for the Spirit of America July 4th celebration at Grace & Truth Sports Park appeared in Thursday's Greece Post. Following a mysterious 1-year hiatus blamed on a lack of volunteers, things are definitely different from the celebration we came to know.

Shortened hours: Starts at 5PM, fireworks at 10PM
(What happened to the afternoon festivities for the kiddies?)

Admission: "Free"
(If you can walk or get someone to drop you off!)

Pay To Park: $10/car onsite!
(Why the sudden money grab? No other local fireworks charges to park, do they?)

Shuttle Bus from First Bible Baptist Church: $2/person!
(OK, I understand someone must cover the cost for shuttle service, but again, couldn't they find funding?)

Very oddly, the ad states: "We're asking everyone to do their part in keeping the fireworks in Greece."

This location is in HILTON, not Greece! As with most such things, there's obviously more to the story and my suspicion is it involves our local politicians.

WHY AREN'T WE HOLDING FIREWORKS
IN GREECE ON TOWN PROPERTY ?

I agree holding Greece's fireworks celebration in Hilton is a bit odd, but the costs aren't so unusual. $10/car is a bit steep tho. Even "Free" isn't free anymore Scats. BTW, we went to the display a few years ago when it actually was free and it took us 3 hours to get out of the damn parking lot afterwards. Never again!

SCATS said...

To 10:59AM~~ Can you tell me of any other nearby community that is charging people to park/attend such a celebration?? I'm not aware of any. Also, why the shortened hours/reduced activities? SOMETHING HAPPENED LAST YEAR ...

Anonymous said...

I don't have the time or the inclination to research who is and isn't charging a fee to park/attend an event. But hiring people to put on such a display isn't cheap. Shortened hours? Who knows why, maybe the kiddie stuff is cost prohibitive. Or maybe, just maybe, like they said last year- -'Not Enough Volunteers!'. I don't wear the 'Conspiracy Theory' badge like you do. You know Scats, you can park along the side of Manitou Rd and probably N Greece Rd for free. The view from those spots is perfectly fine.

Anonymous said...

They may be calling this Greece Fireworks but it really is not a town event. This is held and pay for by the church.

SCATS said...

To 11:26AM ~~ It's so easy to get your panties in a twist these days ;) I asked it as a rhetorical question because I can locateNO OTHER COMMUNITY IN MONROE COUNTY WHO IS CHARGING!!

To 12:16PM ~~ Don't tell Uncle Auggie that, 'cause his name is plastered all over the ads ;)

Anonymous said...

The First Bible Mega Hooray Complex running from Manitou Rd to N Greece Rd is NOT in Hilton. Hilton has enough to live down, PLEASE don't accuse Hilton of being the location of FBHComplex.

Those of us who pay taxes for streetlights in the rest of Greece and can't leave or return to our houses every time 1st Bible, or the YMCA decide to host an event know fully where 1st Bible is.

Greece Fireworks, well for those too young to remember, there was a time they were held at Town Hall Megaplex. That sort of crapped out when the Head Copper, El Chiefogrande damn near fell off the roof of the press booth where he directed disfunction from.

Hilton/Parma fireworks will occur later in the year.

Those attending the Fireworks at 1stBible Megaplex TAX EXEMPT even though they generate a boatload of money from sports complex are encouraged to park in Rainbow Rick Antelli's plaza or his old fire house, have a beer and walk.

Anonymous said...

It is a rip off. It's an attempt to raise funds for the mega church. I hope it back fires for them. Since the Town pays for the fireworks. The church is being greedy.

Anonymous said...

Hi Scats, My panties are just fine, thanks. Maybe you should check yours?

Anonymous said...

This is a municipal event that has been outsourced to the church. I think in the past the town might have given them some money for it. Auberger definitely treats it as a municipal event. In any case it is our holiday for national independence. Jesus has noting to so with it.
Isn't Braddock Bay a town park now that would seem to be an excellent place if Basil's park is too small.

Anonymous said...

Wrong again Scats. It's in the Town of Greece, across the street is Hilton. The permit to build the church was held at Greece

SCATS said...

To 1:12PM ~~ Both properties have Hilton addresses and they posted that the ads. I do recall the fireworks at Town Hall location years ago. Then it was morphed into an End of Summer Celebration and eventually moved to Basil Marrella Park if memory serves me correctly.

To 1:54PM ~~ An attempt to raise some tax free funds in Uncle Auggie's Name? I thought we only did things in Jesus' name, hmmm?

To 2:34PM ~~ I think you better check again ;) My boxers are fine.

To 3:06PM ~~ You make TOO MUCH sense! I think the Town used to help fund the fireworks too. Maybe Auggie is cleaning things up before he leaves ... ?

Anonymous said...

I think this is good value and those who don't like it can and should just stay home. Thanks to the church for organizing it!!!

SCATS said...

To 3:09PM ~~ As I said the ads post the addresses and both addresses given say HILTON :)

To 3:22PM ~~ If you think paying $10 "is a good value' when EVERY OTHER COMMUNITY AROUND HERE IS DOING IT FOR FREE, then I guess the old adage is correct after all ... there IS a sucker born every minute :)

Aside from the fact that BILL GRACEneeds the money to pay for his new Lexus, ever since the Monica Nuezats scandle uncle auggie is no longer on First Bibles XMAS card list.. Last years fireworks did not take place because Bill Grace refused to give the usual $5,000 to the town to pay for the fire works at his park, By the way nothing is free at that place. Just ask the soccer teams who must pay a fee to play their games there. This is an obvious attempt to embarrass Auburger by upstaging his event that usually takes place in August 4th. That is Auberger's independence day because he says so.

SCATS said...

To 4:29PM ~~ What event happens August 4th??

Anonymous said...

Scats I was just mocking out Auberger. The only event I know of that takes place on August 4 th is soon rise and sunset. I used that date as an example of the fact that for the past several years, the fireworks always took place sometime in August at the Town hall. The only place I aware of a fireworks display that takes place in my neighborhood every year that would rival any professional display inspite of the fact that it's illegal. But what the hell thiis is Greece and any thing goes in this town especially if it's against the law. So where's the Cops? Fogetabotit!!!

Anonymous said...

3:22 Are you implying that it is a good value at $10 because it keeps lots of people away? I might agree. I also agree with the person that suggested that we just watch from a different viewing point. We can enjoy them on our own without the ooohs and aaahhs of fellow watchers.
BTW the address of the church is indeed in Hilton. 990 Manitou Rd Hilton NY 14468. It is located in Hilton and the Hilton School district as well.

373 North Greece Rd Hilton NY 14468 for the Grace and Truth Park. So they are both in Hilton not Greece. So 3:09 you are wrong. It was so easy to get those locations.

Anonymous said...

SCATS there's a large number of Greece properties in the northwest part of Town that have a Hilton mailing address. Check your map, and you'll see that your wrong and that FBB is in Greece

Anonymous said...

Well SCATS, just to deconfugle your purrbox; Like most of the surrounding properties, THE ONES THAT PAY TAXES, 1st Bible Megawhoopie Center with coffee bar is in the Town of Greece. It's also in the Hilton Central School District, and Zip Code 14468, Hilton Post Office.

The woopiecenter is in the North Greece Fire District, and GVA Ambulance district.

The woopiecenter also hosts voting machines for a couple districts in the forgotten corner of Town where there are NO DAMN STREETLIGHTS, with the ecxeption of the Town provided and funded light on Frisbee Hill at Hirise which was installed, removed and replaced with a more cute light, because the people on Hirise (a private street) feel their children are special and need light to find the school bus stop. Rainbow Ricky was the Town Counclman who helped get the street light.

Water is provided to the Woopiecenter by Monroe County Water Authority.

Oddly, unlike Barnard Exempt, Grace & Truth Sports Park is tax exempt.
WHY? It's a profit making venture.

SCATS said...

Well, well, well ... it seems to be a split decision about which town the megachurch & sports park are in. At any rate, I was reading about a few other celebrations tonight & NONE of them are charging to park or view. I guess Greece is truly "special" ... in a short bus sort of way.

Anonymous said...

I don't even know what to think about this "split decision" over an easily verifiable fact. No wonder America is in the crapper.

I'll type this slowly for the hard of understanding... Grace and Truth park is in Greece, but has a Hilton mailing address.

Heck, I bet SCATS and most of the rest of us live in Greece with a Rochester mailing address. That doesn't mean our homes are physically within Rochester.

Anonymous said...

The properties are in the Greece tax district so yes Greece. Even if they are tax exempt strangely they get tax bills and pay some taxes. It's called townwide drainage. About 9000 per year for the park and 5000 per year for the church. They don't have to pay any of the other taxes that we do. They pay no school tax.

It shows that the owner is the bible church for both of those properties. So just like the pope owned land it is tax exempt. The land for Mother of Sorrows is assessed at 9 million and the land at Bible Church is assessed at 7 million. But Mother of Sorrows pays townwide drainage tax of only 3000, Bible of 5000. . Maybe they have better drainage being on a hill and don't have to pay as much. But it's all the same. Churches pay no tax on land...except drainage? And we know they don't make any profit or promote any political candidates or causes.

SCATS said...

Whether the church and/or park are actually located in Greece or not doesn't detract from the fact that $10 per car or $2 per person is still a HUGE RIP-OFF for the people of Greece! Hold this event on TOWN PROPERTY enlisting volunteers and get rid of the money grab!

Anonymous said...

Maybe some people from Hilton and Parma and Gates can attend too so they will be ripped off. But they don't have a blog to complain on.

SCATS said...

To 1:47PM ~~ Gates has their own day-long family celebration and it's free. I think Brockport has free fireworks too ;)

As a former member of FBBC, I believe the "church" needs to get back to being a church and get out of the sports & fireworks business altogether. It's time they got back to preaching God's word. My husband and I left 3 years ago because of a lot of the shenanigans that go on there. In years past they never would have Josie Waverly perform either. Perhaps the best thing would be if the lack of rain continues,it would be canceled due to a fire hazard. Oh yeah, regarding the parking, I tried to leave the park a few years ago before the fireworks and they weren't going to let me. I told them they couldn't stop me, and I drove out. The director heard about it later! This 4th of July, I will spend with good friends and my husband. Maybe watch fireworks at another venue for FREE!!! Oh yes, the reason they have no shortage of volunteers this year is because Pastor Grace went on a 45 minute rant about it.

Anonymous said...

5:23 Please say more about these shenanigans Some of us are very concerned about the way FBBC opeates as well as its leadership

Anonymous said...

NOTICE-
MY neighbor and I have decided to rent pretend Popo uniforms and block off North Greece Road from Latta to Post Ave. We will only let you drive in either direction on North Greece Road for a fee of $8.00 per car. Vans and small buses slightly higher.

We figure since we get prohibited from coming from and going to our houses 5 or 6 times a year thanks to all the Grace crap and YMCA joy, we're entitled to compensation.

If Grace can charge, so can we.

Feel free to park on Hirise off Frisbee Hill, it's a private road and those people ain't organized to keep you out. You can walk directly into the park from there too.

I'll be off line for a day or two, gotta go build some spike strips.

Anonymous said...

If I were to tell you all the shenanigans that went on FBBC, I would be gossip but I will say that there is a lot of favoritism that goes on there as well as nepotism. We left for a number of reasons and the fact that the huge complex was built before the building was sold on North Greece Road speaks volumes. Also as far as the coffee bar goes, the church we attend now, has free coffee and pastries, fruit, and other tasty treats each Sunday and no ATM in the lobby!!

SCATS said...

To 7:27AM ~~ An ATM?! Good grief!

Anonymous said...

"An ATM?! Good grief!"

Maybe members need to grab a few bucks to take the family for something to munch after getting their pocket mined by FBBC.

The cultists who have invited me to come and hear the message assure me I will get free coffee and won't be expected to donate.

I think they're trying to recruit me because I have a CDL with for bus driving. Now that I see they are charging 2 bucks a head to ride their bus from FBBC to the fireworks show I'm calling my Union Rep. That job belongs to Regional Transit not some bunch of Church wannabe drivers.

Anonymous said...

Who is paying for North Greece Fire IAFF members to hang around this attempt to set the North End of town on fire?

North Greece's budget must already be stressed because they went to the Southern Tier to pump cellars and didn't get paid. Them IAFF guys ain't sitting on their ass in that park for free, it ain't air conditioned like their megadollar firehouses.

Anonymous said...

Only one of the reasons we left there and the pastor saw nothing wrong with the ATM. But as I recall, Jesus threw the moneychangers out of the temple. Well, I could go on but I won't. I feel bad for the folks who live on North Greece Road unless there some folks who might want to use their lawns for parking space at 1/2 the price! And I have been caught in the soccer traffic trying to leave the plaza on North Greece Road.

Anonymous said...

I believe that the first time visitors at FBBC are given free coffee and a pastry to welcome them. And as far as the buses go, they maybe RTS although I can't confirm that. I still have family members that attend the church but I have only been back there once since we left and that was for a friend's memorial service. Very sad about how it has changed over the years. Spirit of America was a good thing when it first started out but I believe now it's time to pull the plug.

Anonymous said...

I read in the D and C that the town of greece is co sponsoring this. They have contributed $10,000 for fireworks Yert we still haveto pay to see it.

SCATS said...

To 5:34PM ~~ I think Greece has helped fund this most years. It's another example of Auberger comingling church & state business.

Anonymous said...

I'm a little late to this one but I sure hope that many of the posters here don't think that other towns actually have "free" fireworks. They are paid for my that town's taxpayers! These comments really scare me because it shows the lack of understanding about government finaces. There's no such think as a free lunch, anywhere!

Also, regarding the debate about whether the property is in Hilton or Greece... this should be a basic understanding of municipal boundaries. Come on people. You are obviously interseted in public policy or you wouldn't be leaving comments here... but you don't understand the locations of town vs. school district vs. zip code (mailing address) boundaries?!?!?

And on the drainage districts... That's how Maggie and Augie can make their claims about not raising your "taxes." They tack on fees instead! Many are levied by special districts. But nooooooo... it's not a tax increase.

The $10 has clearly been stated by FBBC as an "optional donation." No different than when they pass the plate on Sunday. Tithing is encouraged, but you give what your heart tells you to give - it's between you and God.

SCATS said...

To 12:56PM ~~ Of course other municipalities pay for the fireworks shows they put on! I think just about everyone realizes that. And in THIS CASE, the TOWN of GREECE COUGHED UP $10,000 too!

The ad in the Greece Post did NOT say the $10 per car fee was "optional" nor a "donation." It was stated as a given requirement.

Anonymous said...

SCATS - just looked at their website and I do see now that it does not say "optional." http://www.thespiritofamerica.info/event.html
It does say "donation" though, which I guess in my personal opinion means optional, but i undersatnd that it doesn't come across that way to everyone.

BTW - I'm going to "opt" to stay away and go to downtown or Irondequoit anyway ;) That way I guess that are "free" to me as a Greece taxpayer. I'll have a free lunch on them. ha!

SCATS said...

To 1:31PM ~~ I saw that on their website too. It was NOT included in the full page Greece Post ad, however. I'm opting as you, staying away. Sounds like we might get some T-storms anyway ;) Maybe divine interference?? lol

SCATS said...

I see that in the D&C's listing of community holiday celebrations, most are 100% free except for Genessee Country Museum where you must pay museum entry. Sadly, the ad for Greece's celebration FAILS TO MENTION the $10 "donation" or shuttle bus cost." Methinks there will be LOTS of angry attendees who find out this little "secret" after arriving with the car filled with kiddies. In fact, the website listed doesn't mention the parking costs on the home page either. Nice!

Anonymous said...

It doesn't talk about the $10 donation or the $2 bus ride on the home page but it does on the event information page. Today I was very proud of myself at Curves when a church member was talking it up there. I kept my mouth shut. She said they went door to door in the neighborhood of the Sports Park to explain to the residents what they were doing. She also said it was the Town's idea along with the church for the "donations". I know this woman and she can easily be confused. Also I know a lot of times what is mentioned from the pulpit can be easily twisted, or should I say things get twisted in the pulpit. God may intervene with a thunderstorm but I remember one year watching the fireworks in pouring rain- how dumb was that?!!

SCATS said...

To 11:22AM ~~ In my opinion, the fees should be included in their listing in the D&C! If you arrived with your family & then found out it cost $10 to park (I bet they don't say "We suggest you pay a $10 donation" at the gate ;), are you going to leave? Turn them down? Or pay up & fume about it?

Anonymous said...

They will waive the parking fee if you pledge to vote for one of their school board candidates who believe that the earth is 6000 years old and the dinosaurs went extinct because they couldn't fit on the ark.

Anonymous said...

Is it really that difficult to distinguish between the town the church and park reside in (Greece)and the mailing address (Hilton)?

Is that so hard to comprehend in a town where most of you have Rochester mailing addresses?

Anonymous said...

Scats- I agree, the parking "donation" should be up front as well as the cost to ride the buses. Even there own members can't keep it straight the reason behind this. Next they will charge for their Christmas extravaganza's!! oops, I hope I didn't give them any ideas!!

Anonymous said...

Did anyone attend this event and can report on the local pols there

SCATS said...

To 2:42PM ~~ Uncle Auggie was there. Saw his ugly mug getting interviewed on the news.

As an inmate of the North Greece Road taxpaying penal colony, one who can't get in or out of the driveway I pay for I can barely express my joy over the 2012 Bill Grace (bet that name was changed) Hill Creamora artificial celebration of July 4th.

We've had a little discussion in the hood today, and we have all decided the 2011 dog, pony, horsie, bring your own beer festival celebrating Bill Graces power over Town Hall was much better than the 2012 event.

Seriously Bill, WHY the hell do you have to have all this crap in North Greece? Because you can pressure politicians seems to be the only good reason.

How about you make some use of the giant complex you abandoned up by Ridge Rd? Plenty of space up there by my calculation, and I'm sure Sams Club and the other tenants in the soon to be abandoned plaza would love you running shuttle buses out of their parking lot.

Believe me, we understand you have a huge monthly nut to crack for the mega whoopie warehouse over there on Manitou side of the property, and we really don't mind you turning a few quick bucks on the paintball patriots and ball kickers, but dammit you're screwing at least 100 families out of the peaceful enjoyment of the property we pay for at least 5 times a year, not to mention 100 dogs going nuts and peeing all over the place.

It was nice of you to have members of your flock out at daylight picking up all the crap tossed out the windows of gridlocked cars, but if you weren't packing way too many people into too little road there wouldn't be gridlock.

On behalf of the taxpayers on North Greece Bill, take your fireworks and shove them where the sun don't shine.

Anonymous said...

SCATS ... Calling someone "ugly" is not "name-calling"?

SCATS said...

To 8:23AM ~~ It's descriptive and factual. Are you trying to get a date with him?

SCATS said...

To 2:48AM ~~ I received another email yesterday describing the gridlock and associated safety issues. In part, that person wrote:
" ... my suggestion for next year is the organization needs to
post NO PARKING signs on both sides of Manitou Rd from 1st Bible Baptist
Church and north to Burritt Rd. By 9:30PM there were cars lining BOTH
sides of the road and there is no shoulder to pull over on. It was
crazy. Cars could not get by. The busses got stuck. Finally several
Greece Police cars came by and with their microphones told people to
MOVE or get towed. It was becoming a safety hazard should any emergency
vehicles need to get by."

Anonymous said...

Sure would be a beach towel if NY DOT did their damn job on Manitou since it's a State Road instead of sluffing the issue off to Bill Graces Pretend Police.

The score so far- Bill Grace 942, Taxpayers -0-

Gotta keep them bucks coming in to FBBC, big nut to crack on that monthly mortgage, and the heated sidewalks ain't solar powered either.

What will Bill Grace and the GIANT MEGAchurch pull off next?

Will Bill put a MickyDs or a doughnut shop in? How about drycleaning?

Too bad somebody put the blocks to Bill's plan to log off the woods between the MEGAchurch and the BALLS FOR PROFIT sports zone.

Anonymous said...

SCATS: How come when YOU break the rules (no name calling), and someone calls you on it, your reply always has to include an insult aimed at the person that criticized you??

SCATS said...

To 9:27PM ~~ So unless you believe he's ugly, too, there was no insult ;) Ugly is descriptive, not a name.

Anonymous said...

2:56. Bill Grace already runs his own dry cleaning business on site as every year he takes his flock to the cleaners for meg bucks for the privilege of kissing his ring and other things.
