Fallout From Our International Fame

Now that the entire world ( over 80 countries!!) knows that we're the DYSFUNCTION JUNCTION ...
  • Will property values tumble?
  • Will Greece School enrollments nose-dive even further?

Question one YES REASON SCATS

Question two YES REASON,SCATS

To 4:27PM ~~ Can't be! Because if that were true, then you would have to give SCATS credit for being effective ;)

Anonymous said...

yes Scats you are DEFINATELY effective However there varying degrees of effectiveness two of which are positive and negative. I'm afraid you fall into the latter.

SCATS said...

To 5:59PM ~~ I have no idea what "negative effectiveness" means. I doubt that you do, either. As is typical in this DYSFUNCTIONAL Town, you'd rather blame the messenger than make the needed changes. More scandal is on its way, it's just a matter of time.

SCATS, since you harp so much on dysfunction, what changes do you think would bring about better functioning?

No fair trying to answer the question by claiming various forms of functioning as the needed change - that reduces to mere tautology (cure dysfunction by functioning better).

What structural changes, policy changes, legislative action, etc are in the power of leaders to effect that would produce function where today we have dysfunction?

To 9:12PM ~~ First, cut the politics, especially in the BOE meeting room. No more pandering to special interest groups like school-of-choice parents, hockey parents, etc. Second, start some honest, open TWO-WAY communication. Don't hold phony "forums" where the public talks to a nonresponsive panel of bored electeds. Third, make the processes truly open & transparent! In Greece, they do the MINIMUM (or less if they think they can get away with it) in abiding by rules, laws, policies, etc. Why can't they attempt to keep the spirit of the law in mind instead of playing games on getting caught misbehaving? These first steps would go a long way to start ;)

HEY, nobody got stabbed or shot in Greece today. Well, at least nobody we know about.
AND
No School Bus Monitors got assaulted on a GCSD bus today either.
AND
Only 2 people got cat scratch fever from SCATS going off on them.

3 good reasons I love living in Greece.

Scats let me try to explain negative effectiveness that even you might understand. You asked if you were an effective entity as blog master for this site. My answer was yes. However. When one truly has an effect on conditions .the effectiveness of your effect will be measured in two ways.the degree of one's effect on things and whether that degree is minimal or powerful .It will also be judged as to whether the effect has a positive or negative result
In your case your effect is minimal on issues of importance and most DEFINATELY NEGATIVE in ittone purpose There is no doubt in my opinion that the most effective accomplishment of you and your site is to continue to stir the pot of your personnal discontent with every thing about this town and project those sentiments thru this self generated venue.
I hope this helps you under the meaning of negative effectiveness as it applies to your blog site.

Please explain to me what you mean about politics in the board meeting room. Could you give me an example to help me understand what you mean?

Dysfunvction as you call it starts and ends with a functional school board. This we have not had since The so called HMO board in the last decade.
Aproactive responsive representative board is the first step in reorganizing this under performing district. A board who will hold the Superintendant and administrations feet to the fire and hold them accountable for failure to make changes necessary as well as consistent with all needs and wishes of all stakeholders.
Scats, until this takes place all the talk and comments and suggestions are just plain fruitless.
If e er a district was waiting for SUPERMAN, Greece is the prime example.
The question in my mind is are there nine people out there who are willing to get involved as reform minded board members and get them selves on the board

To 9:13AM ~~ Honestly, I have yet to EVER hear (until your dissertation) of anyone measuring effectiveness in "positive" or "negative" terms the way you describe. You are entitled to your opinion about the "minimal effect" of this BLOG. The fact remains that it would be a non-issue to you and a few others who protest so loudly, if that were truly the case ;)

To 9:27AM ~~ There are lots of examples, but due to time constraints, I'll point to some memorable historical ones.

1 - Roger Boily & his bunch announcing their candidacy for BOE by holding a press conference called in the BOE meeting room. It was ILLEGAL & political ;)

2 - The BOE Prez. ending a meeting by urging the community "to get out & vote "yes" on the budget."

3 - Permitting teachers and other employees to utilize "Residents Forum" time to b*tch about union-related business. Their union reps already have a spot on the agenda for attending to this.

4 - Suddenly not allowing a former administrator to speak at Residents Forum by using the excuse he wasn't a Greece resident, but allowing teachers who weren't district residents to complain during Residents Forum about budget cuts.

5 - The BOE showing up at West Ridge school to allow themselves to be subjected to a night of crying, moaning & wailing into the microphone AFTER THEY DIRECTED THEN SUPT. ACHRAMOVICH TO CUT THE BUDGET! HE DID HIS JOB!! They interferred, inappropriately!!!!

I could go on and on and on, but I won't.

To 9:47AM ~~ Yes, we certainly could use Superman in Greece Central. I'm not sure if he could even fix all that's broken.

Hey I remember that Boily incident. That violated State SED LAW as well as district policy
As I recall, the district employee from the Chamber of Commerce was terminated shortly after That took place. That was also the year the CofC collected 15,000 dollars in donation to get him on the board which he did.
Board politics was a factor after he was elected.
If memory serves me, He is gone from the board and his influence over weaker board members will no longer be a factor in that form of board dominated politics.

to 9:47 A simple and effective way to 'improve' the Greece school board is to reduce it's size from 9 to 5 members - simple to do.

School administration(s) 'want' the biggest board as possible to insure business is not done in a business like manner and micro-management is their focus.

It is also quite obvious that 'business' is being done in ex-session as there has been little to no dicussion at board meetings in open session on business items. This was one of the first items HMO put an end to but 'that' went array. I see the same conduct at town board meetings. IT'S WRONG.

Forget about our fallout from International fame.Wht not worry about the Towns already tarnished image.
This latest scandal is just another nail in the coffin of this town outrageous reputation in Monroe County alone right now I suspect our local realtors might have that image to over come. Maybe I'm wrong I don't know.
Incidently blog master, my wife and I moved to Greece from a small Southen tier town five years ago. We wanted a place on Lake Ontario which we now have. We are both retired and our kids are all married and not living with us
Now to my point.
Since we have lived here, we have had an opportunity to visit most of the smaller surrounding to towns. All seemed to have a theme or object or center piece that proudly proclaimed their existence as an independent town I have yet to locate the existence of such venue in Greece that is a point of community pride that sets Greece, the largest town, apart from the others . In short What is the one thing that that Greece residents can Identify with and distinguish us from the rest because we got something in Greece that is unique and no one else has,? Maybe I'm missing it and possibly some one on this site can tell me what it is and where to find it.
Blog master perhaps when the opportunity presents itself you can put this question to your readers in the form of a thread or something. I would be very interested in what some residents view as a resource or venue that exists in Greece that we can proudly identify with. Just a thought.

To 1:47PM ~~ You mean you haven't "Discovered the Promise?" yet? lol

We're known for scandals involving Town Hall, the police dept. & Greece Central, too. That's certainly unique to Greece ... and Maggie ... ;)

I'll consider the separate thread, thank you.

Charlie I have to disagree with you five person board. in any other school district in this area that concept would work. not so in Greece. Roberts rules would dictate that 3 members makes a quorum in order to business. Since 3 would constitute a majority it would be easy for special interest groups to control the board by voting as a block to further their agenda. Of course we've seen this before even with the present 9 member make up.
In my opinion given the way this board operates and for all the reasons you outlined, it would make more sence to me to just abolish the school board.
Under this scenario , the Superintendant would become theCEO and she could appoint her own board of directors. The change would hardly be noticeable as things would continue to be done as they are now. What do you think. Lol
