Bullies on the Bus, Part II

< === NEW POLL

IF those four punks were picking on another student on the bus that day, HOW DO YOU THINK IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HANDLED?

Would Klein just sit there?
Would she see it over those tall seats?
Would she hear it?
Would she intervene?
Would she tell the driver?
Would she write it up?

The reality is, we don't know how many other Karen Kleins Greece Central employs to "keep order" on the buses so our kids stay safe!

Do you want to gamble with your child's safety?

We know the answer to that question. She was not aware of anything that was going on in the bus. Hardly aware of what was happening across the aisle from her. She says she didn't hear what was said in most cases until she saw it on the video.
Is there any way we can find out what is going on between the seats on the school bus? Is there any way we can know about the kids who are secretly harassed in school, teased, hurt, bullied, etc. These would not be covered under the new bully law because they are done in person not on internet. Maybe the kids don't report it because they are embarrassed or fearful of retaliation. Even after the kids get caught for bullying they return to school and probably instill fear in the classmates after they are returned to the classroom. Maybe some of the kids could write into this blog and be assured anonymity and please report what goes on and is tolerated on the buses, the classroom, the halls changing classes, the locker rooms, the cafeterias, etc. These things go on everyday and are not videotaped. They only live on in the heart of the hurt person. Let's invite the kids to write in. There may be some that do it to fool around but most will be honest. Tell us. Is it comfortable and secure in the Greece schools or are you afraid and vulnerable?    6/24/2012 10:35 PM

To 10:35PM ~~ Excellent suggestion! I'd also say that parents should be asking their kids about what is really happening on their buses. Ask them if there is a monitor. Ask if the monitor keeps order, writes-up referrals, intervenes, communicates with the driver, etc.

CHANGE IS DESPERATELY NEEDED.

Coming to GCSD this September, Sweet Tyler's Special Services.

Is your little darling being bullied on a Greece Central bus?
Are the driver and monitor ignoring your precious being bullied, taken off for his or her lunch money worse, slapped around perhaps?

Even worse is little Rnadolph or darling Richellanne being insulted leading to a loss of their self esteem?

Face it parents, kids are cruel evil little monsters when they group up on a weak link. We know your kid will never play a sport, because those glasses Randolph wears will drop him on his nose if he moves fast. Randolph will never catch a thrown ball or bat one because of those glasses either.

Are you going to sit back and make more excuses, perhaps permanently paralyzing your child with fear destroying the kid's future by 3rd grade because you have faith in GCSD employees doing their job?

You already know the teachers don't teach, and you have a shelf full of the For Dummies books beginning with Crayola for Dummies. You know GCSD is a big playground for Bullies, and the employees are more scared than your rugrat is. They have bills to pay and have to take crap to keep their job. Are you tired of no solutions from GCSD?

If you're tired call Sweet Tyler! I've put together the Solution Team for Bullying, something GCSD couldn't or wouldn't. One of the boys will ride the bus with your kid and get the crap straightened up. We have experience. We know how to intimidate, and we're willing to kick ass for cash.

Sorry, no checks or Pay Pal, we can't leave records. Cash is KING! Fortunately we work cheap. We have to, we're GCSD graduates and we can spend more than Welfare provides.

Email, Twitter, holler at my door, Sweet Tyler will solve your kid's problems.

PS: you got an ugly daughter looking for a Prom date, we can set that up too,for CASH. You can even have one of the Boyz ride along on the date for a few dollars more.

One call does it all with Sweet Tyler Services. Don't wait, don't debate, just pay me now!

It doesn't matter if the kids are being bullied and harassed. GCSD doesn't care. Even when you do report it, they do nothing about it. They are full of BS when they say they have a anti-bullying program. All lies.

And Karen has the right to spend and keep the money anyway she sits fit. She didn't ask to have someone start a fund for her.

SCATS said...

To 12:38PM ~~ If bus monitors & other district employees want their concerns about student discipline addressed then they MUST do their part to help resolve & solve the trouble. First, they must do the duties required in their job descriptions. Second, if they want situations like this bus video shows taken seriously, then they must respond seriously in kind. To me that means you press charges because it matters. If you won't press charges, YOU are part of the ongoing problem. If you are an enabler of the dysfunction, you don't deserve the dough. That's my view ;)

By the way, I think the masses have come to their senses about this in recent days. Donations have slowed to a bare trickle in the past 24 hrs. Her 15 minutes of fame is nearly over. Greece Central's notoriety shall live on for quite sometime to come.

Anonymous said...

If its not about the money Karen should ask people to stop giving beacause the point has been made.I really hope she enjoys all that has been given but by taking any more for herself it starts to show greed. Karen could ask people to donate to their favorite charity if they have so much extra money to give.

SCATS said...

To 2:28PM ~~ Of course it's about the money. At the end of her interview with Ryan Seacrest she said "Just keep the money coming." And then she chuckled.

Anonymous said...

I was a teacher aide for many years. You do not realize what low rank workers have to tolerate. I was told that I have no right to write a referral on a student, only teachers can do that and also was told I should think about what battles I want to fight. Then if you insist on the write up being submitted, you are the one who is harassed and bullied in your job for doing the right thing. Eventually you are the one without the job and because it is a thankless job they can find someone in a minute to replace you. Then who won??? Karen was smart, she did not make the situation worse by arguing with those boys and for god's sake give her the money so she can quit that awful job!!! Babs doesn't care about Karen, she will find a way to get rid of her, I am sure she already promised the parents in exchange of something else.

Anonymous said...

If Greece Central keeps her on as a bus monitor I hope they will be ready for the law suites that will come from having someone not able to do the job as descibed.

Anonymous said...

SCATS you are showing your jealousy. You wish someone would start a fund for you. You are like the wind. One day you support the women, and then because she goes against what you want her to do, you lambast it. Why?

Anonymous said...

2:54 Unfortunately you won't have to worry about it because she wouldbe foolish to continue working for this corrupt district with all theMONEY that you obviously covet You might consider applying for her job, Hey you never know. right?

SCATS said...

To 3:03PM ~~ You are TOO funny!!! lol

In case you never noticed before, I'm ALL ABOUT ACCOUNTABILITY. It's the "A" in the title of this BLOG site.

The kids need to be accountable for their behavior, but hey, they are KIDS!! Kids make mistakes, show poor judgement. The adults are supposed to be in charge to teach them how to make their way in this world.

As I said before, there was a RESPONSIBILITY on BOTH ends in this PR disaster. I know the truth hurts, but Klein was totally out-of-order here, too. Now that the dust is starting to settle and the money grab is slowing, more & more people are starting to see it, too ;)

Anonymous said...

What some of you people fail to understand that SEDlaw requires that drivers and aids or monitors must be physically able to perform certain tasks including being able to evacuate a student from a bus accident or fire. They are tested regularly in order to qualify and keep their positions. if she was physically unable to qualify, the district 's insurers would not allow this person to work in that capacity.I
I don't know if the functions required are the same, but when I was there, one of the required functions was the ability to drag an 80lb sand bag the length of the bus isle and remove it from the rear emergency door. Scats. I'd be willing to bet she would be able to remove even you if she had to in an emergency situation.

SCATS said...

To 3:26PM ~~ Tested by whom? Greece or NY State?

WHAT does that tidbit about pulling 80 lbs. have to do with anything anyway? My point is that she did NOT PERFORM THE STATED DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH HER JOB, as listed by GCSD.

Anonymous said...

Scats now that the dust settles more of us are realizing what YOU are all about. Don't look now but I think your credibility has taken a huge hit.

Scats we are looking forward to you being at the board meeting. Perhaps you might sign up for the public forum and if they show up you can ask them both that question.
I think both of them would be glad to satisfy your curiosity . It really doesn't matter if you ask, I think both of them will address your concerns by looking directly at you so you don't get it wrong.

Anonymous said...

its a 125 pound weight and at Greece it isn't required to drag it down the aisle of an actual bus. They have a floor tread that they keep in the trainers office that they unroll it and you do the drag there. This test is part of the Physical Performance Test and drivers and monitors have to pass it. The drivers test has had more elements to it than the monitors. This test needs to be passed every two years.

To 4:20PM ~~ I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there's no forum at Tuesday's meeting ;)

SCATS said...

By the way, being able to drag that weight has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TASKS THAT WERE IGNORED last Monday afternoon on the now infamous bus ride. For a list of those, please refer back to the GCSD link I posted :D

SCATS said...

To 4:48PM ~~ You haven't been reading if that's your belief! On my comment posted 6/25/2012 12:59 PM, there are suggestions. On the threads about GCSD's DYSFUNCTION, I spelled out a lot of things that MUST happen. We need policies that are specific, include specific consequences for specific actions & that are applied consistently. Look around. THINK. You might find others I posted ;)

Regarding the poll -So far the boy's parents are the only ones supporting Karen in her job! Such a huge surprise! Our district is doomed by its own ineptitude.

SCATS said...

To 4:59PM ~~ To quote Dave from Storage Wars: "Yuuuup!!!"

Add to that the fact that ALL of her "supporters" on here hide behind their own anonymity. Methinks they KNOW she was irresponsible, too.

Seems like people have forgotten this isn't the first bus monitor that wasn't performing their duties. Does the name KINNEY ring a bell? That was just over a year ago ;)

Anonymous said...

MY God, Scats you are no better than the rest of the reporters, School Officials, Board Members, ect.. that you have written about for years now.
Why don't you stop with this BS on Karen K. and just find out for yourself by applying to become a bus monitor.
Then you can see first hand how the angels are, how they will respect you, how easy it maybe just ignore because many years of reporting only got you on the hit list.
You and a few of your followers seem to have all the answers about the issues, so why don't you and these other pathetic dogooders go get these monitor jobs and do your best in keeping control.

A poll to see if you think Karen can keep these angels, (wolves) safe! Wow, that is a side of you that I thought I never see nor believe. Guess I was wrong!

Anonymous said...

Scats, Thought I never see the day that I was 100% against you and your opinions but I am!

You really sound like you are embrassing the comments that seem to stir up the more conflict over this entire bus monitor trashing. You want to hold a bus monitor responsible for the people at the top of the food chain in transportation and beyond that department.
You really thing trashing on Karen is going to make people look at you and say: Wow, I agree with Scats, I surely respect her opinion or do you think that someone might think that you are actually related to one of those thugs on the school bus!

Anonymous said...

Scats, your newest poll is disturbing and I am not going to lower my standards by voting.

SCATS said...

To 10:32PM ~~ I don't need to become a bus monitor to know. Quite a few have contacted me within the past week and AGREE WITH ME about how she wasn't doing her job and might not have been fit for her job. As far as I'm concerned, my stance has been validated by the drivers & monitors who have backed me on Facebook ;)

By the way, KEEPING ALL STUDENTS safe on the bus is the reason we have monitors on buses, isn't it?

To 10:54PM ~~ I don't really care if you agree with her or not. The FACT remains that her "supporters" on here are not putting their names out there. I wonder why? Defending the indefensible is my best guess ;)

To 11PM ~~ Disturbing? Why? Because you know it's NOT SAFE to put your kid on her bus!!

PLEASE NOTE ~ Not a single one of you, Karen's "supporters," has written to say that you are comfortable letting your children ride Karen's bus. THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES!!!!

Scats let's move on. this subject is a mess and is becoming embarrass ing as the more talk generated by this is only proving to people living outside of Greece believe that this town, the school district and the residents of Greece are all DYSFUNCTIONAL as they read the comments on this site.
It's your site therefore your responsibility. This subject goes away if you stop defending your position against those who disagree or are critical of your position. Let it go.
Instead, let's learn from this and discuss some ways to pressure the board and administration to make necessary changes in their approach to effectively deal with the ever worsening problem of student discipline before we are faced with the worst case scenario involving students not only on buses but in the classroom and hallways of our schools.

Anonymous said...

To ask whether or not she is able to perform her duties is not "blaming the victim". SHe has said she made the choice in her case not to report. She also said the boys have had behavior issues before...the question is in the OTHER cases was she the victim or was it other students. There is enough reason to believe based on her own statements that she may just be passive and ignore it all.
I feel that the money is a result of people in general being fed up with the generation of entitled and out of control children. I do not believe the money is validation that she was correct or acted in a manor to dissuade the children's.

For those that are implying to question her is attacking or jealousy over the money I ask you this...if she or other students had been hurt as a result of escalating banter who would have been responsible for diffusing the situation before it got out of hand? I dare say your perspective would be reversed and questioning how and why she was place on a bus and that question is for DO at GCSD.

SCATS said...

To 3:02AM ~~ OMG! That's hysterical!! Because I didn't always combined several responses into one comment box, it upsets you!! That's pretty silly ;) It seems like people are asking me to DEFEND myself, so I am. Unlike in GCSD-land, when I'm "attacked" I respond. It's the FUNCTIONAL thing to do.

To 6:46AM ~~ Yes, let's go back to burying our heads in the sand & pretend this never happened. Let's continue to ignore the EMPLOYEE ACCOUNTABILITY ISSUE. Let's HOPE the parents of those 4 kids don't SUE THE GCSD & grandma Klein for millions of $$s! OOPS, too late!? I've read remarks on other sites as early as last Sunday where people claim the parents of two boys are filing suit for what's happened to their kids. Imagine that, they are upset by hearing their 13 year olds vilified by the likes of the Matt Lauers around the world, when the ADULT IN CHARGE FAILED TO TAKE CHARGE. No don't come back to me with more hate, because it wasn't MY IDEA. I'm the "messenger" and I know it's VERY painful to get your head out into the daylight where you can SEE, HEAR & TAKE IN the WHOLE STORY.

In case you haven't already heard, GREECE NY IS DYSFUNCTIONAL!! We've been this way a long time. It brought us to this point. It has NOTHING to do with this BLOG, either. We're known around the world for three things, all of them VERY DYSFUNCTIONAL:
J-MAC (need I say more?)
KAREN KLEIN
GEO W. BUSH @A-PAC - a bldg. that was unsafe in a 20 MPH breeze!!

IT WON'T "JUST GO AWAY." It must be dealt with on all levels: employee accountability, policy-making & its application & enforcement (discipline), and administrative support.

To 9:47AM ~~ BLESS YOU! You "get" it :)

SCATS said...

OOPSIES!! Don't look now but the D&C has asked the accountability question in today's paper ;)

By the way, the "hater" comments that I'm NOT posting have quite a bit in common with the 4 boys on the bus. Calling me names, many of which are not printable, is awfully immature for a bunch of supposed adults.

I am a kid that was bullied at school and on the bus. At one point even my teacher got into it which allowed the kids to bully me MORE! I don't ride a bus anymore an I haven't since 3rd grade because of how horrible I was treated. One boy stood up in front of the bus and asked if anyone wanted to have sex with me. I was to young to know exactly what that was but I knew it was not a good thing he was saying. Another boy sneezed and wiped his snot on my face and backpack. That same kid stole my toy and claimed I stole it from him when he was confronted by the driver. I ALWAYS sat in the front seat closest to the bus driver because I thought it would be the safest. No place was safe. In kdg. I was punched in the stomach, MADE to sit with the "naughty kids" because the teacher hoped they could learn from my example and chocked by a jump rope until my Dad threatened the school with legal action. I was taunted so bad that I ate lunch alone most days in 4th & 5th grade. Silly bands were a nightmare for me. Kids used to snap them at me and they'd hit me in the face. I was threatened with electrocution and bashed in the head by a heavy book. My sports team was never good enough. I was always a loser no matter who or what I liked. Well, to all you nasty kids who told me I wouldn't last a day in my private school...I made high honor roll EVERY quarter, was given the honor of Student of the Month. I have friends who like things I like and will stick up for me. I am HAPPY! To the principal and teachers of that school, what went on was not "Boys Being Boys." It was WRONG! It's time for us Bullied to stand up to the Bullies! I am going to be SOMEONE despite your lack of support and the abuse. AND it was abuse, mental, emotional and at times physical. Thank you Mom and Dad for always having my back when no one else believed me.

SCATS said...

To 12:26PM ~~ Thank God your parents did what they could. Just an FYI, been there & done that both as the "victim" and as the parent of one. Stay strong.

Joe Moscato said...

Scats,, Recently said I won't be posting or reading this site anymore. A family member told me about the controversy about the bus monitor Karen Klien on your site. I did go to the site the other day and would later regret that I did.
I couldn't believe some of the trash talking that was taking place regarding this woman and her sudden unexpected reversal of fortune brought about the incident on the bus.She I'd not ask for this, but she has unfortunately attained celebrity status both locally and world and nationwide. When that happens, a persons life and her appearance and life style become fair game
For not only the media but local detractors of this new life changing happening. I believe based on what I have read her is exactly what is taking place on at least the local level as evidenced by comments on this site as well as yours. In my opinion this is indeed an unfortunate event for the Town of Greece. I hope this sentiment projected toward her is confined to the boundaries of Greece.
You asked for her supporters to put their names to their remarks. I support that as I have always believed that remaining anonymous about something you feel strongly about, has a tendency to deminish it's impact.that be said, it remains their option in this format
Having been employed by the district in both the capacity of a driver and monitor I can empathize with ms Kleins situation. Therefore I support her actions and demeanor exposed on that unfortunate video. In my opinion she acted appropriately at great personal indignation under the circumstances that confronted her.
Catch22 would the best way to describe the situation.
Time and space will prevent me from sharing with you and others my personal experience in this arena. So in a separate post, I will recount those experiences for consideration and the realities encountered when working in those positions and the policies of the district in regard to how to deal with disciplinary issues.

SCATS said...

To Joe Moscato ~~ I have repeatedly stated that those punks were way out of line. She did not deserve to be subjected to that. Sadly, she was. Her response of not responding at all, not even carrying out the tasks required of her AFTER THE KIDS WERE OFF THE BUS, is a HUGE ISSUE that GCSD needs to respond to now.

Here are MY ISSUES with what happened ON HER SIDE of this incident:

1 - During the video, she responds to the boys several times by saying things that do not attempt to stop the onslaught or deal with it as a bus monitor. Instead, she intermittantly reinforced their bad behavior helping to feed into the attack.

2 - She FAILED TO NOTIFY THE DRIVER, either during or afterwards.

3 - She FAILED to notify her supervisors at transportation afterwards.

4 - She FAILED to submit a written report of the incident.

5 - She FAILED to press charges!

If GCSD employees want to be taken seriously about discipline issues, then by God it's time they step up and treat it seriously themselves! This means they MUST DO WHAT THEY CAN AS EMPLOYEES (reporting it appropriately at the very least) and if that means filing criminal charges, then so be it.

How else will these kids, DO and the BOE ever get the message?

Anonymous said...

Joe:

I can see you point as to her handling of the immediate situation as many GCSD employees are trained not to react but hater RESPOND...see JOE when she chose not to file a report she failed to RESPOND as outlines in her job description. I can state for certain that these boys have had other problems on the bus as I have a relative that rides it. Since she has acknowledge she did not report her own incident and ALSO acknowledged they have behaved poorly previously the only conclusion is that she does not report incidents. There fore it is a logical to question her actions as a whole.

BTW I too have been there...lunch monitor here! I am only responsible for my actions , I write up and report students and what happens or doesn't is the responsibility of my supervisor. I follow what is expected of me per my job description. It is a dysfunctional system but that does not absolve employees from doing the basics!

JOE said...

To Scats you seem to Beverly hung up over the fact that she choose not to press Harrasment charges. You are now getting into an area that I acquired considerable knowledge as a member of the GPD
Among the various assignments I had was that of a Youth Officer, a position commonly referred to in the PD is that of a "KIDDY COP" As such, I served for three years in the Youth Division. We dealt with minors under the age of 16 who got themselves into trouble with the law.
The division worked within the parameters of the NYS
Family Court judicial system. Believe me, if some of you out there have correctly stated that disruptive children are caudled by building administrators, you have to see how Family Court Judges handle similar and worse situations Many times I was taken to task by these Judges for bring this poor kid, a product of his environment before her.I was the guilty person in the court room in her opinion. More serious charges than Harrasment were dismissed with not even so much as a slap on the wrist for the perps.
Look, should she had followed district procedures , of course. Should she press charges in my opinion no.Why? My experience with the states juvenile justice system tells me that to do so with 13 yr olds would be a total waste of time, money and resources with an unsatisfactory response by the courts in dealing with these kids who will be sent home with parents with a warning from the judge to not let it happen again or else.
Trust me when I say this, the district is in a better position to take positive punishment for these these kids to really understand that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. By effectively dealing with the punishment in house, the district will be messaging others of the consequences of breaking the rules.

SCATS said...

To Joe @6:35PM ~~ To Beverly?? Where did that come from?

I don't know how to say it any more simply, clearly or plainly than I already have. If district employees want disciplinary matters taken seriously, then district employees MUST respond to them seriously themselves! That means DOING ALL THAT CAN BE DONE. If charges can be brought, I expect them to be brought.

Let's face it Joe. Your crystal ball is no clearer than mine. To suggest that the case won't be taken seriously by the courts based upon your experiences from a couple decades ago is a big stretch. At the very least, pressing charges will inconvenience mom & dad, maybe getting their attention when they have to make an appearance, hire an attorney, etc. District policy should require employees to press charges to the fullest extent under the law, period.

Not for nothing, but each day that goes by, more & more people are messaging me telling me they agree!

SCATS said...

Oh & one more thing. Besides the courts, the discipline should ALSO be addressed in the school district too.

The message needs to be that if you do the deed, you WILL pay the highest price.

Anonymous said...

Joe: It has been years since you were a part of the system. I say that it in fact would be beneficial to the community if there were charges. I say this as the students need to understand how they hurt not only Karen but the community. Like in Brighton with the kids that painted the Swastikas, this case could go to Family court with part of the "punishment" phase coming from a community justice approach ( I understand that there may be no way to charge and thus a non issue).

Joe-Your reasoning is like that of employees that choose to do nothing because of the perception that nothing happens...it is a waste of time....so simply don't do it.

Lets be real: a charge in family court is not the end for these boys, they are minors. It is however appropriate if NYS law allows it.

With the Dignity for All students act becoming law in a matter of days, the GCSD has yet to publish a plan as to how those that violate the boundaries set forth in the law with be managed. The law is clearly written yet with so many children with needs in tradition classroom I fail to see a plan that will provide "dignity" for the "victims". Our district is reluctant to move children from classrooms once placed no matter the issues they present. Unlike the work place when harassment and abuse happens the violator is fired. If there is not a clear plan to protect the "victims" when offending behavior continues then how is dignity protected? If teachers, para professionals and monitors do not report then the documentation needed for protection is lacking and it gets swept under the rug. So to all that say Karen did the right thing...She failed and documenting the pattern of behavior...it is what is needed and just! Our children are deserving of and counting on KARENS all over our district doing the job they are hired to do and now to uphold the law to protect them!

SCATS said...

To 7:59PM ~~ THANK YOU!!

Your statement in the middle needs repeating, loudly:
"Joe-Your reasoning is like that of employees that choose to do nothing because of the perception that nothing happens...it is a waste of time....so simply don't do it."

More than anything THAT is the crux of much of the district's DYSFUNCTION.
