Board Member Brown-Noses Boss

Why Is Doing The "Right Thing"
So Hard For This Group?

For the first time in recent memory, a single Greece schoolboard member voted "no" on a motion tonight. Usually, I'd be pleased to report that someone finally got a spine and did something for a greater cause. Not in this case though.

Sean McCabe decided to vote against the motion to rename several schools impacted by the School Consolidation plan. His stated reason: because his boss, Bud Phillips from the Greece Ridge Fire Dept. opposes the changes, fearing confusion on the part of public safety personnel.

This reasoning makes NO SENSE AT ALL. In reading through the documentation attached on BoardDocs, we learn that everyone else from the other three Greece fire districts to the Chief of Greece police to the 911 dispatchers concur that such changes can be made without causing any lapse in public safety for the school buildings, children or employees.

Instead of brown-nosing your boss, Sean McCabe, you should have shown some slight measure of class and abstained based upon a conflict of interest! That would have been the "right thing" to do.

I see the vote on the budget was 7-0
Where were the other 2 board members? Perhaps they don't find the budget to be important.
I also saw 3 times the dicussion on these name changes than on the budget. I belive i saw a total of 3 questions on the budget and no questions or dicussion on the purchase of new busses.

I don't get it... Apollo kids are losing their school's name and that's OK but somehow it would be bad if WestRidge and OA lost their names????
There are numerous conflicts of interests with the BOE and I have never heard any of them abstain from a vote...

To 7:22AM ~~ They've failed to discuss almost anything in the last year under Julia's watch. No discussion means no criticism in their small world ;)

To 8:33AM ~~ And don't forget Kirk Rd. and Parkland kids too. On top of that, Odyssey will get to have a fancy new LED school sign, because they're so special ;)

Considering the person in question, this comes as no surprise. There are no upstanding people on the current board, not a single one.

It does seem that a totally new name might have been more appropriate. Guess the BOE has run the gamut of their knowledge of Greek gods, goddesses, locations, etc.

The problem with our present bunch on the school board are two fold. Two board members who never did any thing during thing or contribute anything of consequence were simply riding the last year of their terms. Steinglien was over her head as a board member. She had no clue as to what she was supposed to do as such without checking Roger about how to vote on issues. The one thing she excelled.at was missing a ton of meetings and complain about the number of meetings. Totally useless in her role for. 3 yrs. Roger lost interest when he lost the majority and failed to save ACHROMOVITCH' job. His major contributions during 6 yrs was the engineering of the hiring of that looser in the first place. The other was to reverse the changes and progress of the. HMO board. That was his mandate to begin with by those who raised 15,000 dollars to get him elected.

As for the rest of them one had future polical plans which has since evaporated. As. For the rest two had no idea of what was going on in the first place. As for the leadership they knew what needed to be done but put in place stalemate policy of " Get a long to get along" in effective tenor adopted by all. The obvious result hour long meeting with little or no input on the issues before them.

In my opinion until we find and put people on the board with the same degree of commitment as those HMO guys things will never change.

McCabe is a walking conflict of interest. Everything from voting on teacher contracts, to open enrollment/school of choice, ect. Ask around, off the record of course, and this latest issue should come as no surprise.

To 5:11PM ~~ On the open enrollment/SOC issue, just about all of our BOE are in it for their families and personal interest.

Scats, this is off the topic but I wanted to know if I heard it correctly. Channel 10 reported that the new GCSD budget will raise taxes 2.63%. I thought the NY tax cap was 2.00% or inflation, whichever is lower. Can someone in the know help me understand?

7;57 I hope you and others go to the budget presentation tonight at Apollo 7pm and ask that same question.

I would give McCabe benefit of the doubt that he's not brown-nosing, but possibly listening to plausible arguments made by his boss. McCabe's job is to evaluate the validity of the arguments and vote according to his judgement. That is what I would expect of an elected official. That you disagree with the argument doesn't necessarily follow that he's brown-nosing. I also think it's not surprising that the various fire chiefs would not all agree on the issue.

To 11:02AM ~~ The benefit of the doubt!? REALLY!?!? WHAT "DOUBT" do you have??

It is a FACT that he should have abstained from this vote simply BECAUSE IT INVOLVED HIS EMPLOYER! They call that A CONFLICT OF INTEREST!

By the way 11:02AM, try reading through the documentation. I did. Phillips was the only one to cause a fuss. But he was also the only one to miss the original meeting ;) (Maybe he doesn't want to be in the same room with law enforcement that are investigating a certain infamous arson case?)

GCSD has bent over backwards trying to satisfy him ever since, at expense too. Lawyers don't come cheap.

Folks, get a life. A guy votes against the majority and all you can do is criticize. As though you would have praised him for voting with the crowd. What we need is more representatives bringing diverging opinions to the discussion, not fewer, even if those opinions come from their vested interests. Kudos to Sean for naming the interest. Interests are always there, better to name them and follow them than hide them and pretend to be disinterested.

To 7:15PM ~~ Had he any modicum of common sense or class, he would have abstained from voting on this item for the reasons previously given.
