GCSD Poor Stewards Of Fundraiser $$'s

Report shows numerous oversights, sloppy accounting practices in handling fundraiser monies

Corrective Action Plan * - Extraclassroom Activity Fund Financial Report June 30, 2011

SCATS ~~ If they can't handle the small things properly, can we be confident they are handling the budget/taxpayer's funds correctly?

So they are asking for board approval to implement these corrections which will be completed by March and April this year. So they were supposedly correcting all of this without board knowledge or approval and are requesting that approval retroactively. And this only pertains to the years 2010 and 2011? So what are they doing at the schools and all the extra funds now?
Have they told any of the parent booster clubs about this? And where is the part about all the sports fund raising? The music and theater and ski clubs and elementary book stores are but a fraction of the funds raised by sports.

To 8:13AM ~~ I think we can assume that many of the same mistakes are made EVERY YEAR. It appears these kinds of infractions aren't taken all that seriously given that the report is dated so many months ago ;) But then you do know the school board's mantra, don't you?

"Just trust us!

This issue of mishandling of Extra Curricula Funds by parents and staff has been going on for at least 20 years. In every annual district audit you will find issues with each of the schools the auditors "sample" when in comes to these funds.

What this report DOES NOT tell us is HOW MUCH MONEY is in each of these "Extra Curricular" funds. This IS important because if you total all these funds up from all of the individial schools funds you will find it is in the MILLIONS of dollars each year. These monies come from US, Taxpayers who expect better oversight of our dontated dollars.

There have been numerous times over the years where individual parents and teachers have raided these funds for their own use. The AD at Olympia was canned years ago for using Ski Club money to fund his golf outings, new golf clubs for himself, golf shirts and chalet rental at a ski mountain. Thousands of dollars in just this one instance.

It appears from this report that even with training each year, the same mistakes keep happening. I stopped donating money to any of the kids in my neighborhood for their activities for this reason.

To 7:10AM ~~ I feel similarly. I agree, if we only knew how much $$ was in the coffers from fundraisers, or that parents coughed up out of pocket, etc. I do NOT support any GCSD fundraiser of any sort because I feel that if the activity is important enough to offer, then GCSD should fund it. Also, I do not believe that kids are attending school to hone their sales skills! They should be doing homewprk instead. Add to that the fact that GCSD just can't seem to get it right in handling these funds, I feel that everyone is better off avoiding handling money, period.

To 1:05PM ~~ yes, the district tries to pass WGMC off as being on its own, along with Continuing Ed, but they are still PART of GCSD! They should operate under GCSD rules, regs & policies too, but everyone knows they don't ;)
