Can We Afford To Keep School Resource Officers?

Can We Afford Not To Keep Them?

SCATS ~~ We must pay top dollar (overtime rates) for the few hours/week each cop spends in our secondary schools. That makes them a pricey line item to fund in tight budgetary times. Are they a "want" or a "need"?

I think they can play an important role, but I think it is a farce that we are forced to pay overtime rates to have them available.
Just another money grab.
There is no reason that the GPD could not figure out how to have an officer stationed at our schools for straight time.

To 12:01PM ~~ Actually, there is ONE reason. It's called a union ;)

So these officers come to the school after working their shift? They should be paid overtime. Any hour worked past their 8 hour work day is overtime.

To 7:17PM ~~ My understanding is they work the schools BEFORE their shift.

In the real world of the non-union worker, many professional people work 10 or even 12 hr. days with NO overtime pay.

That is called a salary. Professionals negotiate a salary and know the rules and expectations.

Anyone working past 40 hours for no overtime pay is being abused by their employer and should be reported to nys labor department

You dont have to be in a union to get overtime pay.

Just because they do, doesn't make it right! So these cops should donate their free time to the school district? GCSD should hire their own security team and not just a bunch of retired guys playing cop.

To 8:12PM ~~ LMAO @ the idea that professionals on salary are "abused" or that they "negotiate" their salary!! What planet are you from??

To 8:35PM ~~ I just love people who swing from one extreme to the other, pretending there is no middle ground. Congrats, you just did it ;)

Between overtime pay and a "donation" is something called regular pay ;)

Seems like Park Ridge operates a fleet of licensed security clown at a lower hourly cost who are just as effective as the GPD report takers.

Lets see, crime on school property is crime. Baxter's Beauties are paid by Greece Taxpayers to write reports, they damn sure don't prevent crime.
Why the hell should they be paid extra to walk around GCSD property?

Lets cut the crap send the sleepy cops home and hire appropriate security clowns. The result won't be any different.

The poor children at OA were exposed to loud and rude rap music the other day...poor babies..See thumbs down in D&C...lol
Does someone at D&C have kids at OA?

I agree. Hire a security company. When something happens that you need the police call them, after all it is what they are there for. If it saves money and you are able to maintain the same quality of service then the Supt. ought to be considering it, unless they have a special "relationship" going on.

To 11:07AM ~~ I think I am seeing that hiring a security company makes sense. I have to chuckle at the fact that not so long ago, GPD was NOT "welcome" on GCSD property. If a kid was beaten & the parents wanted to charge the attacker, it had to be done at the home of the kid, not on school property where everyone could see it.

To 8:50AM ~~ OMG! I bet it destroyed the IB portion of their brains! lol

Dear 8:50. The complaint came from neighbors, not the children

Hire Rent-a-Cops and have them have direct links to the real cops. Works other places.
