Despite Committees, Consultants & Studies ...

It's been 21 years since the creation of  schools-of-choice.

The original purpose for having them resolved itself when enrollment plummeted from about 15,000 students to a current  figure that hovers around 12,000.

NOT ONE IOTA OF DATA EXISTS

TO SUPPORT RETAINING CHOICE IN GCSD

They fail to reflect district demographics
They cost more to operate
They have divided the community
They provide NO benefit to the Greece Central School District

Article in D and C about the input session reminded us about "the Broad foundation" that was pulling the strings on the 5 committees. They manipulated the committees to "prioritize". The Broad group gave them the items to prioritize with the criteria to consider. So the committees did not start from scratch. They were the usual rubber stamp committees that miraculously come to the conclusion the board wants in the first place. Deja-vu from the days of Yagielski.

Some thoughts to consider about the Broad group:

8:52 you are absolutly right.

Several days ago I asked a very simple question - 'what is the purpose of schools of choice' - yet to get an answer.

Also we should not forget 'open enrollment' which comes about 'because' of schools of choice.

This division in our district is NOT good over all.

As for committees again 8:52 you are absolutely correct - phoney as a 3 dollar bill. A crutch for administration and the school board.

To 8:52AM ~~ Thanks for that link. I'm a bit surprised to see that someone so smart as Babs is supposed to be would resort to dependency on the same "reform" group that caused Brizard to flee the scene!

To Charlie ~~ The committees are phony. The charges made to them are phony. The results/"options" suggested by them are phony. In my opinion, the results are fraudulent. If Greece parents sit on their hindquarters and allow this to happen, education in Greece will be headed for total disaster in the coming years.

We all remember the East Irondequoit debacle, right?

So, pretty much, their minds are already made up and this is similar to some of the large companies that only hire from within but are still mandated by law to post job opportunities on their website... no matter what we present, they already know the outcome. It is all just a smokescreen to make it look like they are going through the motions when they are just sitting back and waiting?

Where exactly are the comments people are making listed on the board website? I am having trouble finding such a page as are many others I have spoken to. Can someone post the direct link please?

SCATS said...

To 3:48PM ~~ They didn't share a link where we could read the comments others are making, not as far as I'm aware. They posted a link to "survey monkey" so YOU can leave your comments. Here is the link to that:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/F62RLVR

I tend to think Tuesday night's forum is nothing but a set-up, a waste of time. They've already made up their minds BEFORE they even assembled the committees.

Have you people here done anything at all to change the way the GCSD operates? I thought people you supported won school board elections recently? What happened?

SCATS said...

To 8:25PM ~~ I'm not sure who you are directing that towards. This past election, SCATS supported NONE of the 3 running for BOE.

By the way, it takes at least FIVE (5) votes to get even the simplest thing done on the Greece BOE. Even if it gets passed, it doesn't mean it will be tended to. Example: the BOE adopts new policies then IGNORES them!

Elected officials, paid or not, should do what is morally and ethically right for their constituates- whether they voted for them or not. I know, i know pipe dream...

SCATS said...

To 6:08AM ~~ Please pass the pipe ... I believe that too, even though I "know" the reality. It's VERY sad to think that the well-being of a majority of Greece kids will be ignored by the BOE under these bogus "options." We will know who to blame for those ever-declining test scores in the future, won't we?

To achieve District rate of 38%(probably higher now):
OA entering class of 2012: 120 openings
60 filled with siblings
about 10 sibling slots would be disadvantaged kids (based on 2009/10 %)

The remaining 60 slots:
36 Disadvantaged kids
24 Non disadvantaged kids
How do people on the wait list "feel" about that!
Lets remember Apollo was at 57% (2009/10)

No matter what the "two" schools will be very demographically different even if OA matches the District demographics!
PineBrook at 11% will have an even harder time depending number is Sibs entering!

What a MESS!!!!!

SCATS said...

To 9:34AM ~~ "Mess" barely begins to describe it! It just occurred to me that I now know how we end up with poorly designed highways, like the old "Can of Worms." Must have been the work of a bunch of consultants, committees & administrative "pencil pusher" types who came together to hatch a plan.

Interesting viewpoint from Diane Ravitch on why charter schools (in Greece Central :Schools of Choice) are failing to serve the children they were originally designed to help.

The unmentioned option (except in here of course): Boundaries drawn, everyone back to their neighborhood school, period. “Sorry to all our school of choice families, but we’re going to do what we feel is right for the district, not just for today but for the future”. Deep down these school of choice families know they are on borrowed time and are only hoping to get their kids through before the collapse. They knew the risks when they put their kids into these “special” schools. The problem is until a foot is put down, it never ends…. Next year, when this same discussion is taking place, it will just be a new group of people crying that THEIR kids need their school of choice! This goes on and on… it never gets better until they are told no more. Guess what, they’d get over it in about a week!

To 10:16AM ~~ You might be forgetting the very personal stake many BOE members have in the continuation of SOCs. Isn't Boily's daughter principal @PB?

Anonymous said...

SCATS: So what if RB's daughter is principal at PB. Principals are not elected by the parents, nor do any of them have to fear performance evaluations. When it comes to the Greece BOE, everyone is above average.

SCATS said...

To 11:37AM ~~ Do you think he won't fight to keep her award winning school as untouched as possible? Not to mention, his grandkids benefit too!

RB is all done this year

cant go back to neighborhood, we need to maintain the equal percentage of minority kids per school

SCATS said...

To 6:17PM ~~ Pssst! There isn't and hasn't been an equal percentage per school. You can't "maintain" something that never happened.

Anonymous said...

I am just glad they are doing something. Too many years of ignoring the situation has left me with very low expectations!

It has become apparent to me, following last evenings events, that our savior Supt. is either stupid or on the SOC kool aid. Her statements, "So many times it comes down to schools-of-choice or neighborhood schools, or kindergarten through fifth-grade or k-2 and k-3, but maybe we can have schools-of-choice and neighborhood schools, or kindergarten through fifth and k-2, 3-5" are absurd. Newsflash Babs, the district that pays you all that money DOES have schools-of-choice and neighborhood schools! Greece has kindergarten through fifth and k-2, 3-5!

What the F*** is she being paid for?!?! What the hell did she think all this talk has been about?!?! Yes, we already have those things...and THE DISTRICT IS FAILING BOTH ACADEMICALLY AND FINANCIALLY! All the bs committees and studies and community forums... and she says that?!?! This chick’s solution STILL involves 5 buses coming down my road to take 5 kids (all the same age) to 5 different schools all over town! I have officially given up on her.

SCATS said...

To 9:12 AM ~~ Yup. I hate to say it to all of her supporters, but I told you so from the gitgo.

Charlie Hubbard said...

Unfortunately 9:12 it appears you are correct.

Bottom line - you cannot justify keeping schools of choice and or open enrollment without using some sort of bs. THAT is unfortunate.

I asked the question last night about 'what is the purpose of schools of choice' - all I got was to offer parents a choice!!!

Isn't that nice?

PS; readers might be interested to know the term 'taxpayers' was never used last night.
