Lord, it's me Larry, you got a minute?

You pretty well know I live in Greee and all the kids go to them Greece Central Schools, but I'm beginning to be a bit concerned. Lord I need your wisdom here, you know my Senior Year was 6th grade, and I've labored long and hard to keep the family fed and clothed some years. Thing is just this month I heard what my school tax bill will be come September, and with things being what they are I don't know how I'm going to pay them.

I'd find another job if I could but really I do need a little sleep between jobs. Other thing is all last year I looked at all the kids report cards, and even took time off to go to them teacher meetings, and the fact is even though them teachers claim my kids are A students and learning a lot, I'm wondering.

Don't seem LeRoy should have an A in 4th grade math and still be pulling his shoes off to add up anything past 10, and well we really need to make the 23 year old boy in 11th grade a conversation all by itself. Enlighten me Lord, am I not seeing the grand plan, or is Greece Central a complete sham run by a bunch of crooks?

PS: I can't even promise an extra buck in the collection Sunday, still got a long list of school supplies to buy so my kids can get good grades.

Why do they have to vote on these items? Aren't they part of the budget?
Do they have to vote, for example, to pay first grade teachers or principals?

It may have already been discussed here, but I've heard recently that the ELA test results have taken so long to come back because they were THAT bad. Now they're doing something to adjust them on some sort of different scale. Btw, this came from a teacher. Ne1 know anything?

To 4:59AM ~~ They vote on all "staffing" as the year progresses. Stipends are mostly for staffing the extracurriculars and the coaching fees are for the sports end.

To 5:13AM ~~ You mean NY State ELA scores? Doug Skeet wrote something about them which I posted on Aug. 13th. titled "Sadly Predictable." I also BLOGGED about it after the scores were presented to the BOE when an administrator told them: "Despite (districtwide) efforts, the NY State test scores were disappointing." That BLOG with a link to the results was posted Aug. 11th if you want to look back for it.

To 4:59AM ~~ I want to also point out that as the year progresses, the BOE decides HOW TO EXPEND whatever budget plan is approved. Just because something may have been "in the budget" before the voters approve it does NOT mean they will fund that item during the school year. They can pretty much do as they please. The budget is merely a "plan" and plans can be changed.

Does that mean 16,000 times 10 and 205,000 times 10? That's over 2 million for sports in coaching fees alone.

To 8:53AM ~~ The only way your question can be fully answered is to track it month by month & add it all up.

This district has lost its way. This is just more proof. Add it to lousy test scores, low graduation rates and ridiculously high budgets and the Titanic has been relaunched.

I think I know what 5:13am was asking about. The individual test scores haven't come back to families yet. I've also heard they are being held up for some sort of spin to take place to keep parents from freaking out, hoping they think just "other people's kids" are falling behind.

To 10:46PM ~~ Perhaps so. I know that DO staffers already freaked out, because we supposedly have some really wonderful improvement plans in place, but they didn't work everywhere. Maybe something more is going on ... ?
