BOE To Have Options On Goal #2 By Mid-Dec.

BOE Goal #2 ~ ~ Take steps to understand the issues and options related to:

  • Streamlining school and transportation operations to reduce costs.
  •  Impact of closing a school building(s) by consolidating students/grade levels or programs.
  • Study methods to align schools of choice with district demographics.
By end of Sept. ~ Transportation Specialist review bus routes for cost savings
Early Oct. ~ School & program consolidation considerations made
End of Oct. ~ School & program consolidation considerations ~ to look at impact on transportation efficiencies
Two meetings between cabinet & School Attendance Committee members
Dec. 13th ~ Options provided to BOE for consideration

"These decisions will likely involve major, major changes in the district." ~~ Don Nadolinski

SCATS ~~ Well Don, it's about time!! The last few years of foot-dragging is costing us some big bucks!

What a goal! If they agree to talk about it or to consider ways to determine who they will hire to study it, they meet their goal.
That's like a teenager setting a goal to figure out when he will have the best method determined to ask the red-haired girl out for a date!

I think Greece Central finally has an outstanding Supt. I am fully aware we are in the first two months of her contract but she is tackling major issues for Greece Central in a very detailed organized, involved manner. I will openly say I am very impressed with the details of her involment and planning with the stake holders.

Lets make a deal. This could be a fresh start for Greece. The deal would be to focus and comment on
Greece from starting on 7/1/11. The past is the past. We can learn from it but we can not change the past. We have an opportunity to provide positive input and help with the necessary changes coming for this year.

Look at the new Greece Central website. You will find some of plans. The plans, the concepts, the strategies for improving academics, graduation rates, the closing of at least one school, school attendance paterns are being planned with community involment. All of these issues were put under the carpet or "kicked down the road" by previous Supt. This Supt., Barbara, is taking them all on right away.

New York State has new requirements for teacher and adminstrator's evaluations. Plans will be submitted to the state on time 9/1/11. New York State has put a 2% cap on school districts for 2012. The Greece budget will be completed on an aggresive time table and completed early. Currently the budget is projected to be short by 8 million dollars.

I think we are able to see a positve change in Greece Central. She will be the captain turning the ship around and I predict we will see standardize test scores and graduation rates start to climb.

Sincerely,

Doug Skeet

Doug, you found it easy to state two near goals succinctly. All they need is an amount and a date and the BOE has them ready to work on and evaluate themselves against.
I hope you are correct in your assessment on the new Supt. Greece needs to focus on two or three things and make the improvements that will mean our students are learning.

Keep moving forward folks. The past is a has been.
I like her fresh start!

Once again whe have the fox guarding the hen house. I can't tell you how many times the Transportation Dept has done "studies" regarding the costs of running their department. The data that comes out is usually there is very little cost savings to "it will cost us more" if we CHANGE anything. Just like the GTA, it is all about job preservation.

Heaven forbid if we change anything and reduce bussing runs. We just might have to eliminate some jobs or something.

To Doug @9:42PM ~~ I realize you like her and understand your reasons, but I must disagree. She sounds good, but actions are what will matter in the end. What makes me very skeptical is that she has said several times recently that GCSD already has WONDERFUL, TOPNOTCH school improvement teams in place. Well guess what? Stevie A. put them there! If they are so wonderful, so topnotch, why didn't we get better results? Something's not right in this equation.

To 6:10AM ~~ I agree with you 100%! There has been NO CHANGE IN TONE from DO about actually instituting any major changes. The old "can do" viewpoint is MIA, just as it has been the last 15 yrs.

6:10 you are right. That is absurd. It would be like letting your kid figure out how he can save on his allowance needs. No saving here. Just keep it the same. ( For those of you that give your kids an allowance).
There should be an oversight entity that looks into that. Maybe Loszynski has some free time.

To 8:49AM ~~ By chance, do you know WHY Loszynski is back?

SCATS:
Action....Have you read her 100 day plan? That is action!! Never did Steve W. or Steve A. get out into the community like that. She has met hundreds of community people. Roger Boiley will not be taking her golfing, joining the Chamber of Commerce and the Republican party.

Action....Guess who was absent from the BOE study session last night Boiley, McCabe and Hockey Mom got up and walked out. There is a message there. Roger is all done if he can't have control.

Action... she has committed to having a report done by the end of Nov. early Dec on feeder paterns for school organization. My guess is at least one if not two schools will be closed.

Action....She has read, in her first two weeks, every ninth graders report card. That would be over 1,000. She was looking for trends, patterns in academics and schools.

Action....At the first Focus group meeting she indicated that the refreshments where purchased by her out of her money. No big deal in terms of dollars but it shows a sensitivity about purchases and we all know what other Supt. have purchased.

Action....Her school improvement teams have new people on them. Anne Mitchell is gone. There is a new either finance or facility person hired last night. My guess we are going to see many individuals decided to leave work some where else.

Action...The community asked for a Supt. that can do short and long term planning. Her 100 plan is in place and her five year plan will be done this school year.

Action...We asked for a Supt to have everyone on the same page working together. She has the BOE, Cabinet and other administration reading "The Speed of Trust" by Covey.

Action....We asked for an Instructional Supt. Read her 100 day plan for her views on instruction, academics and graduation rates.

This will be an interesting year in Greece Central. My guess is that the Greece Central starting 7/1/12 will look nothing like 7/1/11.

SCATS down load her 100 plan and please read it. I know it is early. I have we are on a honeymoon but this is the best start ever for a new Supt.

Enjoy

I've had a former GCSD bus driver tell me that the number of routes has doubled in the last 20 years, yet the enrollment is way down. Of course so are the academic results, LOL!

To Doug ~~

Yes, I've scanned through her "entry plan."

Did you attend the study session? It started very late (about 27 minutes late) for the radio audience. Are you saying that Boily, McCabe & Stenglein deliberately left because they oppose the Supt's plans?? I heard Julia say that Stenglein had another committment & had stayed as long as possible ... but making up excuses for a compadre is certainly not beyond her.

Here is the link to the 100 day plan, Doug. Good idea to have it here.

I wish her God-speed and hope she keeps pluging away. I am in her corner until she proves (Proves) otherwise. Mistakes will be made because she will try things.

Keep it up girl!
I do think she is wearing her big girl undies!

SCATS said...

To 2:46PM ~~ If she's causing Boily to walk out of BOE meetings, MAYBE there is hope!

Anonymous said...

boily and mccabe did not attend the meeting.

SCATS said...

To 4:31PM ~~ That was my belief prior to reading Doug's comment. Upon reading it again, perhaps I misunderstood what he meant to say. Possibly he was saying McCabe & Boily refused to attend the meeting and then Stenglein "walked out." I know she left based upon Julia's remark.

Anonymous said...

I heard Boily wasn't in town.

Anonymous said...

Boily has missed a lot of meetings. If he hasn't got the time, he should resign.

I call scats commenters and fans flash mob. Orien's cafe at 2:30 Friday.
Hey if no one else shows up still good coffee. And no dancing unless some of you are also fans of the macarena.

SCATS said...

To 9:33AM ~~ Sorry, I can't make it. I'll be here writing ALL of the comments by myself (as some of you contend that I do). lol
