A Greece Central Forgotten Priority … Instruction!

On June 16, 2011 the D&C published an article with the 2010 suburban school district graduation rates. Sadly Greece Central has continued its slide to the bottom of the county rankings. For 2010, including summer school, Greece is ranked second from the bottom with an 85% graduation rate. Greece is ranked third from the bottom, without summer school, with an 82% graduation rate.

When Greece’s graduation rate (85%) is compared with “like” school districts, including summer school, Greece ranks in LAST place: Brockport 86%, Gates-Chili 85%, Hilton 89%, Rush-Henrietta 90%.

When Greece’s graduation rate (82%) is compared with “like” school districts, without summer school, Greece ranks second from the bottom: Brockport (81%), Gates-Chili (83%), Hilton (87%), Rush-Henrietta 88%.

Greece has ranked in last place in suburban Monroe Country, in such important instructional areas as math, reading and language arts. If the school district is in last place at the elementary and middle school level, it has to catch up in the high school level.

This graduation rate drop was so predicable. Approximately 10 years ago, Greece ranked 6th, 7th or 8th from the top of suburban Monroe County school districts. The blame goes directly to the very top leadership of Greece Central. Under the Greece Central Board of Education President Jerry Phelan and School Superintendent Steve Walts, Greece lost its way and forgot its primary function - Instruction. Under the reign of Phelan and Walts over 500 of 1100 experienced teachers resigned from Greece. To recover this valuable experience will take years.

Greece has lost its direction with many distractions including: implementing a failed new math program, teachers having to file EEOC complaints for protection, lifetime health and dental programs given away to Superintendent Walts, a flawed capital building project was implemented, a series of new superintendents, new Board of Education members with hidden agendas, the introduction and influence of the Greece Chamber of Commerce and the Greece Republican party under the leadership of Roger Boily. Add, in-fighting, on the Board of Education and you have the major factors in distracting educational leadership from their primary mission of successful instructional programs and thus student academic success.

The top three priorities for the new superintendent, Barbara Deane-Williams, have to be instruction, instruction and instruction. It is a crime for Greece Central students to have a substandard education. There has to be a focus on student education with measurable objectives, valid implementation plans, respected supervision, involved teachers, students and parents.

With the focused priority of all parties, for instruction, then maybe, just maybe, the next decade will return Greece Central to the prominent position it once held in Monroe County.

Sincerely,

Douglas G. Skeet, former Greece Central School Principal

Amen! I have been so disappointed with the instruction this year. The focus is no longer turning out well-rounded students, but rather passing the state exams. Basics like spelling and handwriting are forgotten. Student learning may be the goal, but it has sadly not been met.

Do us all a favor and go away Doug! You, like Joe Moscato come out when you're in need of attention. Lets all give the new superintendent a chance without all your expert knowledge.

I agree with your emphasis but teaching to test is one of the problems wrought be the over emphasis on testing in federal programs like no child left behind.

To 3:19PM ~~ Excuse me but your comment just screams for attention ;)

I'm pretty damned sure Mr. Skeet is much more of an expert about GCSD graduation rates given his many years on the job in GCSD. Babs would do herslf a huge favor by asking him to discuss the declines he's witnessed.

As usual. Mr Skeet has offered a well thought out analysis, based on experience he had in the GCSD and the ability to put our numbers in context. Those who do not want to hear his message will continue to protect the establishment that panders to special interests and everything but learning, graduation rates and educational achievement.
You can ignore the prophet, but the message will not go away.

500 resignations out of 1100 teachers. Are you for real, Skeet? C'mon -- site your source (oh wait, yeah, you don't have one). Once again, Doug Skeet opens his mouth without backing up anything and simply because he signs his posts "former GCSD principal" you all swallow what he says hook, line and sinker. Ask Mr. Skeet about the sweet retirement deal HE received as a result of an agreement with Steve Walts. Mr. Skeet wasn't so critical of the leadership then.....let's see how forthcoming ou are now, Mr. Skeet. The taxpayers of GCSD may be verrrry interested in how their tax dollars lined YOUR pockets. I'm pretty sure you weren't so concerned about "the instructional focus" for the students of Greece when you were negotiating your personal golden parachute.

There is a third grade teacher at Kirk road that only taught only 2 of the 7 things needed for the ELA's. This was several years ago.She still "works" there.Until Greece gets rid of "teachers"like her ,students are doomed .I'd be willing to bet she was one of the many wearing her GTA United shirts the last week of classes . SAD

Many public employees, not just skeet, receive pensions. Per year Skeet, retired '99- $86,900; Nigro, retired '01-$79,000;Boily retired '98from the town job $60,800; Vito,retire'93-$78,500; Kisha...it says he retired in 2005....but we know he went to VA after Pittsford...$106,200; Bennett(GTA)retired'09-$63,294

So what is the point? Are you saying that skeet took a "secret" pension that we don't know about? Who is talking about helicopters now?

To 11:28AM ~~ Thank you for looking up that info. I had planned to do that today & write a similar response. There's no "secret" deal, no "golden parachute." Just those damn black helicopters ;)

There WAS a deal....trust me. See if old Mr. Skeet will own up ( I wouldn't if I were him).

SCATS said...

To 12:36PM ~~ I don't trust you, sorry. Either put up, or shut up. You are making a claim that goes far outside the norm, show us.

Not my news to share details of...ask mr. Skeet. You don't ask him to put up or shut up...rather, you blindly accept what he says. Guess that only works when the opinion is one scats likes. No one sidedness here....

To 5:50PM ~~ Not your news? Then why bring it up at all? If you're not going to share it, taunting others with what you claim to know gets you some jollies? Very mature.

FYI ~~ As a matter of a fact, Mr. Skeet & I often share links for figures we both use. If NYSED data is one-sided, so be it.

It's not the figures that are in question. It's the comparison data. Oh, and by the way, as I've often seen quoted by...oh yeah, YOU...do your own research if you want to know the answer to a question....if you and skeet share links, I'd say you have an inside track to getting all your retirement deal questions answered.

SCATS said...

To 6:49AM ~~ This isn't a matter of doing research. It's a matter of YOU backing up your still unfounded assertions when 6/26/2011 11:28 AM already wrote in with info showing something counter to your supposition regarding the pension issue. Now you want to jump back to the "comparison data" when it's taken you several opportunities to even spit-out WHERE YOUR ISSUE LIES, let alone WHAT YOU TAKE ISSUE WITH?

Like I said earlier you are just taunting ... i.e. "bullying." It's obvious, you've got an ax to grind, but your time here is over.

Walts arrives in 98 and Skeets is gone in 99. It sounds like the southerners are watching this site. The only people that would know about a "deal" between Skeets and Walts would be the 2 of them. If it is true then the writer must be a close confidante of our departed super or the waltsman himself. Batman and Robin go south of the border. Mason-Dixon that is. LOL.
Otherwise who cares. Skeets is happy and retired and the other guy is working hard for little more than what Skeets makes in retirement. Except for the free healthcare for life.
