Britton Rd. Wegmans Closing Soon

WHEC-TV reports: "Wegmans will be closing its Britton Road store located on Dewey Avenue at the end of July.

Spokesperson Jo Natale said, “Today, there is close to 1-million square feet of retail food and pharmacy space in the Town of Greece including our own. It’s more space than can be supported by the town, despite its size.”

The Britton Road store opened in December 1983. Since this store opened, Wegmans opened a 90,000-square foot store at Latta and Long Pond Roads in 1989, built a new and larger 107,000-square foot Ridgemont store in 1993 and in 2007, replaced the Mt. Read location with a new 100,000-square foot store.

Wegmans says the Mt. Read store has attracted many Britton Road shoppers since it opened and to meet the growing demand at that store, the company will invest $1.7-million to expand the pharmacy, increase product sections and expand seating.

The 348 employees (78 full-time and 270 part-time) will be offered positions at other are Wegmans locations. The majority of employees will likely be transferred to other Greece locations especially the Mt. Read Boulevard store with is just a mile from the Britton Road store.

The Britton Road store opening in December 1983, replacing a store Wegmans had operated since the 1950s at Northgate Plaza on Dewey Avenue.

To 3:23PM ~~ Yup and Wegmans usually flees neighborhoods before they turn from fringe to awful.

Getting out before WM drives Dewey Ave. into the ground. What's Augie thinking now?

If Wegmans wanted to keep a stake in the Dewey Ave area then they should have bought the Northgate Plaza years ago and turned it into great place to eat and shop! They could have put their store in there along with other anchor stores which would pay rent to Wegmans instead of the slum lord who owned the property. It would have been beautiful. Wegmans chose not to do this.

I welcome Walmart. I live in this area and can't wait for it to open. I shop at the Ridge Rd store on a regular basis for all my clothing and household needs. I can't afford to shop at Macy's, Penney's, Bon Ton or Kohl's even with coupons. Besides.....that plaza has been a slum for years.

Wegmans had the chance to make that neighborhhod shine again but passed. I don't think this store closing should come as a shock to anyone.

To 4:57PM ~~ I suspect Wegmans decided to avoid the politics involved in acquiring Northgate Plaza. Maybe that plaza didn't fit their model. Whatever the reason, I know my family hasn't been to Dewey Ave. since Big Lots closed. It's doubtful Walmart will draw us in more than for that once in awhile trip.

I predict the Dewey Ave WalMart will resemble Hudson Ave within just a few years.

To 5:25PM ~~ Given many of the backers of Walmart at Northgate, that's not a big stretch. When you have to move your police precinct closer, it just might be a clue ;)

People in Greece have been complaining about demolishing the Britton Rd School since it happened. Maybe we should rebuild there and have ALL our problems go away!

HEY,
Wegmans don't want Walmartians drifting into their store, and I don't blame them.

Just look at Walmart in Brockport and the one on Hudson.
If you owned a store would you want the people who shop in either of those in your place?

The bus still runs down Dewey, that means the same for Northgate as it meant for Irondequoit Mall.

Maybe price-rite will buy the space at Britton Rd.

The Walmart in Brockport is ok, Hudson Ave is the worst with Marketplace second.

To 3:12AM ~~ Sounds just like how the School-of-Choice group doesn't want their chicadees rubbing elbows with the kids who come out of Long Ridge ;)

SCATS why did I see you on the corner of Hager Road and Dewey Avenue just the other day?

To 1:47PM ~~ Obviously, whoever you think I am is an inaccurate assumption on your part.

Whatever SCATS. Your identity has been revealed. The question is, does your employer know what you do on company time????

To 2:46PM ~~ So someone seen near an intersection in Greece gets labeled as SCATS and immediately is thought to be inappropriately using "company time"? Seriously? LOL

I stopped counting (and caring) after hitting 50 different people that various folks thought SCATS was. You really need to get a better hobby.

I thought Scats lived in the Florida Ave hovel the town code enforcers should visit. You know, the one next to the Kwikfil that gets heldup every couple of weeks.

I thought SCATS was the guy dancing in front of Little Caesar's on Dewey and English.

To 11:49PM ~~ I knew it was only a matter of time before someone said that. Congrats lol

To 9:25AM ~~ Who might that be?
