BOE REMOVES SOC ITEM FROM AGENDA

ALL NINE BOARD MEMBERS VOTED IN FAVOR OF REMOVING THE SCHOOL CHOICE ITEM FROM THE AGENDA!

Oberg commented that if the BOE acted, they could save GCSD:
  • $700,000+ on transportation costs
  • reduce new bus purchases by 24
SCATS ~~ An amazing, but not surprising, show of how predictably gutless all of them are!

Two of the three new principals in Pittsford served as an assist principal and elementary principal in Greece.
Any thoughts?

What is pathetic is the failure of the process to be constructed in a logical manner that could have resulted in a decision. For this I blame O'Rourke, Oberg and every board member who failed to recognize that the process that could have resulted in a sound decision was not in place. (They all failed). Senior staff also totally failed unless they were told to shut up and thus let the process fail by design.
There are so many competing forces that are defending various pieces of the status quo that an effective decision will simply not occur. The only way that grade reorganization eg, SOC, K-5, etc. will occur is for the new Supt. and a new board president (fat chance on that one) will have the skills and competency to agree that change will occur for the fall, 2012 school year. Or at least begin then. Then staff can become focused on some real data gathering and march to the beat of a determined drummer.
Ah but I am only dreaming. This is Greece. The BOE is a ship of fools. Can D-W turn it around. SCATS says no way. I say lets give it a chance and see where we are in 5 months. Is there another choice.....of course not. So put your knives away for awhile SCATS, and lets see if something good might (accidentally?) happen.

My sons and I were in the overflow room #1. The "thug" security guard kept coming in to keep the room in line. They actually tossed some poor wretched lady on the other side of the room out because she was sitting on the window sill. There were "No Standing in the Halls by Order of the Fire Marshall signs all over the place. I guess the students can't do that anymore between classes.

7:22 was that tonight? Do you think they postponed because of the crowd?

Either way fro the BOE to use the word" hasty" is laughable they have a months, even years to make a decision. Pathetic!

Looks like it will get passed on to the "new" BOE and SUper July 1st. The elephant continues to dominate the room.

what a bunch of gutless wonders. pathetic pathetic and more pathetic. I used to work for the GSD, now retired. I'm lucky I don't live there.

To 7:15PM ~~ What knives? The only way the status quo in Greece will change IS by accident, or possibly via alien takeover.

"The process" was doomed from the gitgo. No one on the BOE or in DO had any idea what O'Rourke meant by his three questions. If we actually had any meaningful guidelines to draw upon, starting with a Mission Statement (instead of the meaningless drivel constructed by some hired consultant with another committee of "stake holders") then MAYBE it would have gone someplace.

FIVE YEARS OF WASTED TIME & EFFORT.
ANOTHER WASTED COMMITTEE.
TWO WASTED HEARINGS.
SEVERAL WASTED STUDY SESSIONS.
O'ROURKE'S WASTED YEAR IN GREECE.

What do we have to show for it all? A call to "study it further!"

If they study it another 5 years, they still won't be able, or willing to take action.

Can Babs turn it around? She will have to study it herself before she can even get any idea of what we're doing. Let's go to Applebee's for a drink ;)

To 7:22PM ~~ Don't you know that if they want to, they'll have you arrested for whispering at a Greece BOE meeting. The whole Fire Marshall thing is beyond silly since our schools shape up for fire inspections then immediately go right back to blocking emergency escape windows & other violations as soon as the firetrucks leave the driveway. And to think a Greece Ridge fireman is on the BOE!

To quote Eeyore, "Pathetic, that's what it is, pathetic!"

I have zero tolerance for 'phony' by any elected official. What I heard tonight was just that and it sickens me.
When I heard board members say they needed more 'data' - when I heard board members say they still had questions - even though this has been on the table since March - then I heard two board members 'speak' against taking this off the table, then turn around and 'vote' in favor of doing just that - that was all I could handle and I had to shut it off.

I listened to this fiasco and am left wondering why Oberg changed his basic views so drastically in the past year? Was getting recognition from his peers on the boe more important than principles to this guy? Seems so.

And why is Moscato suddenly onboard too? Did someone kidnap these two and force the koolaid down their throats?
The only things to ever change in Greece are when our standings slip again.

I guess I should not be surprised.
This BOE has not yet ever demonstrated the ability to make a decision. Why should now be any different?

They wanted to table the vote so that they would not make a "hasty" decision?
What a giant, hot, smelly, pile of crap!!

The fun's just starting folks -- wait until the secondary option people who live in Olympia's home attendance area but whose kids are attending Athena or Arcadia find out that the recommendation is to get rid of secondary option and ship their kids back to Olympia.

A disgusing display of complete cowardice. Nine do-nothings in love with their own voices. What a waste!

Now who is whining, crying and wringing their hands?

SCATS said...

To 5:57AM ~~ My best guess is that it will be the BOE who discover how hard it will be to get their propositions on buses/capital repairs approved UNLESS they deal with the cost of transporting kids all over East Bejesus for the sake of a few hundred helicopter parents ;)

Get ready for another 3 years of same old GCSD. The new Super will most likely want to take an in depth look into the situation and do her own research. And so the drama begins anew.

Why has no one asked the BOE what specific additional information or data that they need to collect before reaching a decision? Apparently a 5-year research project is not sufficient.

I see news reports with no "news".
I read newspaper articles that look like dumbed down press releases.

We are the 8th largest school district in NYS and we can't seem to get our heads out of....the sand.

To 9:11AM ~~ Apparently great minds think alike. I just posted a new BLOG suggesting that the BOE VP has no clue about when they will reach "there" on making a decision.

As far as I'm concerned, she said it was NOT postponed indefinitely ... SO I think we must push for them to resolve this issue BEFORE asking approval on busing/capiltal improvement props in the Fall. No more $$ spent until they REDUCE the transportation costs, period.

The Board listened to community members at the public hearing last week. Perhaps if YOU spoke at the public hearing in equal numbers as those in favor of schools of choice, they might have listened to you. So go ahead with this bashing blog instead of presenting your case in factual, respectful, dignified manner.

This board appears to want to imitate the city school board. The one the mayor wanted to eliminate.

Folks...what ever one's position on Schools of Choice is, it is not right to label all SOC parents (or hundreds of them at least) as Helicopter Parents. Not all SOC parents are Helicopter Parents and I am sure there are some Helicopter Parents in the other district schools as well. Your argument of SOC loses credibility when broad descriptors are used for an entire group of people. This is NOT Nazi Germany...

The bus prop should be voted down, we should only spend what we NEED not what a few WANT.

SCATS said...

To 10AM ~~ So according to you, the BOE should ONLY do/consider what is in the interests of those who speak at meetings and to hell with the other 10,000 students in Greece who no one speaks for? NICE!

SCATS said...

To 10:20AM ~~ The parents who bring their kids to bawl into mics at BOE meetings ARE helicopter parents. Both of us know it, too ;)

To 10:55AM ~~ I agree. Since Miz Julia said this isn't postponed indefinitely but then gave no timeline, dealing with it should be JOB 1 BEFORE asking for money on any other proposal, most especially one that involves buses.

I did not hear a lot of factual information put out by the parents and kids who spoke at the "meeting" the other night. A lot of feelings and opinions stated -not facts. SOC that perform better on tests are directly associated with the low % of kids from disadvantage families- nothing else. That is a fact that the BOE and school administrators know.

SCATS said...

To 11:53AM ~~ A lot of the SOC group's "facts" are wrong anyway. Example: the guy who talked to the BOE last night about how SOCs have been around for 25 years.

To 10:00 (anonymous)- If as you say the board listened to the community.

Would you like to explain the action of the board after last years budget vote - the VOTE of the community? I for one would love to hear it.

The crowd breaking into cheers of joy when Chump Change said he was leaving cracked me up...

SCATS said...

To 5:08PM ~~ What was even better was when he told them they were out of order. Too bad he didn't go to the phony hearing and keep order there. I just saw a news clip last night where it showed Miz Julia greeting & holding the door open for the Barney-shirt-wearing throngs from Odyssey. She looked very pleased.

The community elected board members that favor schools of choice. The Board held a forum to hear people thoughts on the issue - and those that came were in favor of schools of choice.

Now people whine, complain and act shocked when the board rules in favor of schools of choice?

I think the posters here should go back to school and do some studying on the workings of a democratic republic.

SCATS said...

To 7:19PM ~~ Sadly, you seem to believe that BOE members only represent the interests of certain children/families. I bet the NY State School Boards Assn & the NYSED would find your views extremely interesting!

THE BOE MUST SERVE THE INTERESTS OF ALL STUDENTS WITHOUT DISCRIMINATING IN ANY WAY.

It's really that simple ;)

I thought the "thug" was really cute.

SCATS said...

To 8:41PM ~~ Nevermind what 6/14/2011 7:22 PM said. We already know Odyssey folks believe the rules & policies don't apply to them. Their principal tells them so and then wonders why people view them as "elitist.";)

I am 6/14 7:22pm. I am not an Odyssey person. Please do not claim that I am so.

To 9:31PM ~~ While I do understand why you might feel that you've been called a name, it really doesn't rise to that level ... yet ;)

Tough making a decision when there is ALWAYS one more thing to look at. I bet the BOE members don't start a road trip to Buffalo until they know all the traffic lights are green. What would they do if they found a red one, or a detour????

To 8:13PM ~~ Funny, but oh so true!
