The Blackout At The Start of the BOE Meeting

Don't Try To Criticize Or Question The Greece School Board;
They'll Censor You For It

I thought I was confused when it suddenly seemed like the regular monthly meeting was well underway March 8th ... "in progress" by the time it began airing on WGMC Tuesday night. Resident's Forum, Student Leader remarks and some Union Reps had already had their chance to be heard, unless you were listening on WGMC, the district-owned radio station. Now we know the reason why ...

SCATS:

Yesterday, at the last minute, I signed up to speak at the public forum. I told Lynne Armstrong the subject of my discussion was going to be the School Reorganization Committee and that I planned to ask Oberg if the charge to the committee squared with my motion that created this committee. I was going to read my motion and ask a number of questions not addressed by the committee's report as well as who selected the committee members. I told her I would press Oberg for answers because under the new policy, board members may respond to a speaker. I was the only speaker to sign up last night and, as you know, there have been no speakers for the past several meetings.

Unfortunately, my back was acting up last night and I was prevented from going to the meeting. Now here's the kicker, several people who knew I was going to speak informed me that the first several minutes of the meeting were blacked out and that the meeting was well underway when the broadcasting started. It is my belief that they were afraid of any controversy at their sterile meeting and conveniently decided not to air the forum portion of the meeting so that those listening would not hear me. Sound familiar? Of course, they will probably say they had technical difficulties, but isn't it strange that this would occur at the one and only time in a long time that someone was scheduled to speak at the forum.

Frank is a big disappointment along with the rest of the gutless board.

The radio station was having technical issues connecting to Apollo at the time of the meeting. I called the station and asked. Notice how quickly it did come back up when issue was resolved. Not everything is a plot to hide things.

the same old censorship

To 9:38PM ~~ The only thing I can say to you is, are you usually that gullible? Clearly you've forgotten the blanked out videotape from a few years ago where our then board Prez. Ms. Julia illegally told everyone in radioland to get out to the polls to vote yes. I'll bet you thought that was just technical trouble too ;)

To 10:43PM ~~ Yup. Censorship, spying, lying, conniving, backroom deals and when nothing else works, cut 'em off at the knees and pull the plug on radio &/or TV.

Where is it a requirement that board meetings be broadcast over the radio and/or tv?

SCATS said...

To 11:15PM ~~ It's contained in another BOE policy ... you know ... that book full of things they like to ignore ;)

I agree the BOE can is shady but even this is a stretch for me to believe. Guess the radio station and workers are in cahoots with the BOE...sorry Joe think not.

Ok, If you look at the agenda, the order of speakers was Student Leaders, then Residents Forum, then Union Leaders. So if they were really trying to censor Mr. Moscato, they would have waited until after Residents Forum to start the broadcast. However the broadcast started with the second student leader. How is that a big controversy? Watch the video on Ch. 12 and then you can blame someone if that's censored too.. Just my opinion..

To 7:54AM ~~ The radio station does what it is told to do, and does it without detailed explanations. The truth is, the beginning of this meeting was so odd, I called someone to ask them if they heard (Or missed hearing) what I had heard. I thought I had improperly tuned in my radio. I hadn't ;)

To 8:33AM ~~ The tv version might include it all. They are not linked as we found out with the infamous Julia "Get out and vote for the budget" debacle. On Tuesday night, I had my radio on, tuned in and heard some sort of mardi gras style music playing. Suddenly, I hear Oberg calling out the names of union reps to speak to the BOE as they are listed on the agenda. I heard no Resident's Forum and no Student Leader remarks. I'm not sure I even heard a request for the GTA prez to speak.

The issue isn't whether or not they did it. I heard it. Others heard it the same way. It happened. The issue is why they did it and that's where I want this discussion to focus.

Joe's conspiracy theories are getting a little old.

Well 8:33 has drank the kool-aid. The delay in the radio broadcast was planned, carefully orchestrated to appear to be a technical issue and absolutely achieved the district's goal to prevent Moscato's remarks from being heard on the air.
And old saying.....Just because you are paranoid DOESN'T mean people AREN'T out to get you! They very well can be.

To 10:13AM ~~ As are Greece Central's games.

To 10:18AM ~~ Thank you for that reminder (as I look over my own shoulder) ;)

Come on now, how stupid do they think we are?

You're trying to tell me that the one and only time Joe signed up to speak in almost a year and after telling the clerk exactly what he was going to do, that suddenly for the first time that I'm aware of they have a problem with the early part of the broadcast. Yeah, I bet you have a bridge down near NYC you want to sell.

Let's face it sheeple, they don't want any controversy at their board meetings and when Joe speaks, there is controversy. They want their totally bland meetings with agenda items up, no discussion and unanimous votes and all over in about a half hour. Just like the Town Hall.

To 6:22PM ~~ Yup, the odds of such a thing happening are almost as great as the odds that certain people win spaces in schools-of-choice for their kids ;) Just the luck of the cosmic draw!

Then Joe should try and speak again, or have someone read his concerns when his back is bothering him, if the "issue" happens again, then you can cast blame. But right now, nobody knows what really happened except the guy at the radio station and the guy that sends the signal to the station/records the meetings. They are the direct people physically responsible for the broadcast...

To 8:35AM ~~ It's people like YOU who re-elect and continuously support the DYSFUNCTION in this town!
Have you "forgotten" about the hidden cameras in District Office used to spy on people? Have you "forgotten" about audience members being arrested (and found NOT GUILTY) for whispering in their seat? Have you "forgotten" how a former district administrator was prevented from addressing the school board when they suddenly didn't want to hear his message so they made Resident's Forum only for school district residents for a few weeks ... just long enough that the person would go to Florida for several weeks and no longer bother them? Have you "forgotten" this is a school board that makes policy and then ignores it? Have you "forgotten" that they will finangle to shut up any parent, employee, resident or board member who doesn't support their message? Have you "forgotten" how Julia's illegal "get out & support the vote" message magically disappeared from the videotape? Have you "forgotten" about an email sent by one board member to another explaining how they must silence another board member by chopping off at its knees any idea that person proposed?

I'll bet you have even "forgotten" how we ended up in the mess this town & district are in! PLEASE DO NOT VOTE EVER AGAIN

To the person who responded to my comment posted at 10:46AM ~~ Starting your well thought out remarks by name-calling the BLOG Administrator a nasty name was intended to accomplish ...?

The current BOE is about as dysfunctional of a group as we've seen. This incident was no accident.

To 11:26 aka SCATS... Way to censor your "open" blog. Just making you realize you were rehashing old stuff incessantly...Edit and repost it then. To your liking. Just a reminder, comment moderation is a form of censorship. :)

Come on, let's get real. Do you honestly think that if Joe signed up to speak again that they would pull off the same stunt. They are not the sharpest tacks in the box, but not that stupid to repeat it, especially now that everyone is on to their game.

The radio DJ only knows when the board room tech/clerk sends the feed to him to broadcast. They never started sending until they were sure there was no speaker that they were afraid of. Then the radio audience was allowed to hear. The board president alerts the clerk to begin the open section of the meeting after they are finished the private part. Then the audio portion is connected to the radio. He makes the announcement usually.
The board is afraid of what Joe might have said and didn't want it to go freely out on the airwaves since they have no delay. If they did have a 12 second delay, in case howard stern decides to speak, then they would freely broadcast until the material they wished to censor was presented. We must not have that technology. Barring that , they just gag the radio part of the meeting until they are sure they are in complete control.

To 11:38AM ~~ Of course I censor. I am not going to open myself to lawsuits. It's a long standing policy on here to not resort to name-calling, swearing and other such things.

To 3:24PM ~~ Thank you very much for that explanation! I want to point out that on Tuesday night, there was NO announcement by WGMC about them joining the school board meeting, something they usually do. But then by now, most of us realize this wasn't "usual" ;)

I find this interesting since as I read through the past few months of this blog most of what I see is bashing, by name, of members of the BOE. Either censor or don't, but don't pretend like you are taking the higher ground. You seem to censor what you disagree with, which is fine, it is your blog, but spare me the righteousness.

To 12:11PM ~~ There is no promise made to not bash an elected official by name. It's part of that little freedom we have in the good ole USA related to Freedom of Speech. What SCATS views as worthy of censoring are things like calling someone a drunkard, a prostitute, an idiot, etc. There is a HUGE difference between saying "I think the BOE Prez. is an idiot" and saying "Slashing the school day by 30 minutes is an idiotic action by the BOE." Focus on the behaviors, not the people ;)
