Flashbacks To The Recent Past & Tricky Math

Rahn vs. Baxter ... or how not to deceive the community

Under Merritt Rahn's regime, Greece was designated as a "Safe City." Following the 2 year scandal that tore apart the Greece Police Department under Rahn's leadership, that title was shelved. Chief Todd Baxter arrived. Crime was reported, often violent crime. People became aware that Greece had criminals and crime and that public safety was something we couldn't take for granted.

But that was weeks ago. Now, hints that maybe we are headed back to the less-than-honest & less-than-open procedures and PR used by a now jailed Rahn are starting to emerge once again. Case in point: the homicide on Old English Dr.

Shortly after police arrived on the scene, Chief Todd told us:  "We're quite sure it's not a random act."

Quite sure? Really? How do you know this?

The D&C reported: "He (Baxter) said while police are investigating to see what sparked the violence, there’s no reason to believe there is anything to fear in the community."

Two people are stabbed, but I have nothing to fear? Why is that? Do you have a suspect in custody? NO!

Today, the son of the murdered woman is labeled a "person of interest" but we're also told he's not a suspect. Baxter told the D&C : “There’s no danger to the neighborhood." What kind of double-speak is going on here? There is no suspect, no one has been arrested, BUT the community and neighborhood are safe? How can this be?

Initially, neighbors reported that police calls had been made to the home in the past for domestic disputes. That was last night. Tonight, GPD says one previous call was made sometime ago, but they won't say for what. Why the mystery? You want to reassure us, right? I'm not feeling comfy here ... nope, not at all.

Worse yet, Baxter apparently labeled last night's murder "the third homicide incident this year"  for the Town of Greece.

Third "incident?" Why are you watering down the body count? There were three men who were found shot to death at Holyoke Apts. in March. Hunter Resch was murdered by his father in February. Now it appears that a son may have murdered his mother on Old English Dr. last night. If I don't include suicide in the "incident count," I count five homicide victims!

On that note, I have one question for Chief Todd: How many "murder incidents" occured on Sept. 11, 2001? Three? Or approximately three thousand? Something tells me you wouldn't diminish the lives of the many men in blue who died that day by calling it three incidents.

Chief Todd, I'm disappointed with you! You're beginning to sound more political by the week. When I see you on the news, I don't want to be hearing Rahn-speak coming from your lips. I want the truth. I can handle it. The Greece community can handle it. You've shown us you can be open and honest. Don't sway away from the truth now, just as the community is trying to trust our cops again.

Please Chief Todd, don't diminish the deaths of any individuals in our town by playing politics with the procedures, the media and the numbers. We can't afford to repeat history so soon!

Auberger should be very proud. His tight fisted control and legacy of corruption marches on. There's only the false perception that GPD has been purged. Many longtime cops remain to do as has always been done. Baxter is merely learning the ropes as he's groomed to carry on Rahn's ways. It's time to move.

It does seems like Auberger is pu;;ing the strings.

Baxter disappointed me in his interview yesterday

Minimizing the impact of a violent death
upon a community within 12-24 hours of
it's occurrence is lunacy.

I get it that there is more crime in Greece, but I am not scared. The murders have not been random( in the past).

I am more afraid of texting drivers than I am of ou community members.

It's a good thing the commenter is NOT running the GPD. You don't profess that you know exactly what happened until you know exactly what happened. That's not just commonplace in Greece friend. It's SOP. Do you attack the police because you got in trouble for breaking the law at some point in your life? Or are you attacking Baxter for political motivation, which you accuse him of? Either way, stop embarrassing yourself with your lack of knowledge about things in life. ;)

And they keep saying they cannot talk to this man in the hospital because he is "under sedation". What does that mean?
And why is this investigation going to other "out of town" relatives? When there is a stabbing in the city do they contact out of towners for information when there is a family and neighbors right here? Either this was a family altercation and it was between the son and mother or there was someone else who attacked both of them. Surely they could allow the son to be roused from his sedatives long enough to see if there was an intruder or attacker. Sadly when this kind of violence strikes people lose their privacy so the crime can be solved. This family is being protected more so than others who do not have relatives in the police and fire department. Back to the Rahn protect the brother days.

To 7:48AM ~~ How do you know none were "random?" No one knows who killed Timothy Milgate. I never heard who killed the man that was found dead in Adeline Park. There was no follow up that I could find in the news (as of 2 days ago) about what caused the death of the man found in the parking lot on Mt. Read Blvd. Or the woman whose body was found in the snow along Ridge Rd. a few years back ... I'm pretty sure I'm missing a few of the unsolved body dumpings, but you should be able to get the point ;)

To 8:58AM ~~ And if you don't know exactly what happened, you don't run your mouth to the TV camera saying you're quite sure it wasn't a random act, unless you are also going to say you are sure of what it really was! If anyone should be embarassed here, it's Baxter for sounding ridiculously contradictory.

To 9:08AM ~~ I saw that about the out-of-town relatives too. Maybe they have "connections" ... I heard there is a cop in training in the family. Is that the brother?

9:08 I couldn't agree more. The point I
hear you making is regarding the impact
an event like this has on a community.
So often we see the yellow tape, the TV
crews and cameras (if it bleeds it leads)
the bodybag(s) being placed in the
ME's van, etc, etc. We become complacent
and accepting of the possibilty that the
killing may have been a" random" act.
And yet, sadly, that is where the story too often
ends. Violence is always symptomatic
of serious underlying causal factors that
have been unaddreseed, suppresed, or
ignored .

A respectful suggestion for Chief Baxter:

Chief Baxter, The next time you address the media regarding a homicide in Greece, try leading with:

"Our thoughts are with ________'s (victim's) family, friends. and co-workers during this very difficult time".

I think the job Chief Baxter is doing is extremely commendable. Although Rahn may have "hid" crime, the amount of serious crimes that occurred in Greece this year is statistically high, as compared to other years. Chief Baxter has been honest and forthright with the community on what has gone on.

In regards to the Mt. Read death, it was probably a normal unattended death, that just happened to be outside. Unattended deaths are common in Greece and other places and are usually never newsworthy. This was one was because it was outside, but I wouldn't look to far into it.

In regards to the Old English incident, I think police have a very good idea of what happened. It is not in their best interest to come out right away and tell people what happened, especially considering one of the key people is still hospitalized.

And to the last comment, it isn't the responsibility of GPD, let alone any police department to have "their thoughts with the victims." Sure it is sad and awful, but the best strategy for police is not to get too emotionally involved so they can solve the crime and find out exactly what happened. That is their job.

To 5:19PM ~~ I thought he was doing a good job too. Suddenly, he's sounding like a bad rerun of the Rahn-speak we heard for years. If there is no suspect, then I believe there IS cause for concern. If there is a violent crime that we attempt to make sound "too routine" then the community has been done a disservice and the pain and suffering of the victims has been diminished. If crime is on an upswing, then we MUST address it, not pretend it's just another sunny day in Mayberry.

SCATS your comments to 5:19 are accurate.
The day we accept "just another homicide"
will be the entire community's loss. I

Most accredited police departments
have victim assistance units. Does Greece
PD even have one?

to 5:19 Since when did a professional and
respectful expression of condolence become
being "too emotionally involved"

Anonymous said...

5:19 You are supposing a lot in your attempt to reduce the seriousness of what's been happening in this town. Why is that? What's your motivation?

It's clear you don't know any more than we do, but attempt to make yourself sound like some sort of pro. What's your payoff?

SCATS said...

To 6:31PM ~~ The Town's website ( http://greeceny.gov/police/victimsassistance ) claims we have a Victim Assistance Program, but I've never heard it referenced before. It says people can "contact the Greece Police Victim Assistance Coordinator at 585-720-0822." I see no reference as to what officer holds that position/title.

Anonymous said...

thanks SCATS it would be interesting to know
if/how often Victim Assistance services
are being utlilized.

In a town this size there should be an active
VA Unit or at least an officer assigned
to victims for follow up

11:31 ~ and I suppose you'd like the Chief to bring you a warm cup of cocoa and a Snuggie too so you'll feel all safe and secure the next time there's a violent domestic homicide? Group hug!

6:54 ~ It's such a travesty the police haven't made an arrest here. Cripes! Why don't they take that son right out of the OR and beat a confession out of him? A better idea: Let's label him a suspect in the media and all before interviewing him or collecting any evidence. Let's arrest him without any probable cause. That way, when we take this case to court it can all get thrown right straight in the crapper with our school district! Oh, wait...what? That wasn't how it happened at all and the homicide was self-defense? That's how the police knew there wasn't any danger to the neighbors? But...but...mothers never try to kill their children, do they? So there's no way in the world that could possibly be what happened.

And, it is three homicide incidents. Just like 9/11 was one singular coordinated attack at four locations (one unsuccessful in hitting its target). 9/11 was not 3,000+ attacks. This week's homicide in Greece was the fifth homicide resulting from three homicide incidents.

SCATS said...

To 7:48PM ~~ I don't believe for a minute that there is a cop overseeing that activity. There is NO mention of it under the duties for each of the new Captains.

To 7:58PM ~~ Since 11:31 made "a respectful suggestion" to the Chief, where do YOU get off attacking that person in this fashion? Sounds to me like you are desperate for this to quietly go away. Your comment about 9/11 couldn't be any more politically correct and morally corrupted if you dipped it in Auberger Kool-Aid. Don't you have a campaign to run?

Anonymous said...

Scats, I think 7:58 might be running for the school board!!

To 9PM ~~ BOE elections aren't until May. Either he/she is very early, or terribly late.

Everyone compares Baxter to Rahn it does not make any difference who the chief is. Nothing will change until you change town government, until then bend over and enjoy the ride.

To the folks who are wondering where the Victim's Assistance Program is and who is this person........I went to the GPD Citizens Academy a few yrs ago and some woman who had the personality of a flea is the head of this so called program. She is not a GPD officer. And this service is supposed to be run out of the Fetzner Rd office. She handed out some little brochure about the Victim's Assistance program but I was not impressed. Don't know how this woman got to be in charge of it but if I was victimized I certainly would not want her to come talk to me. And this program seems very unorganized too. A town the size of Greece should have a well run, well publicized Victim Assistance Program with people who actually care about what they do for a living.

SCATS said...

To 9:39AM ~~ I know there's a lot of truth in what you said.

To 10AM ~~ Thank you for that info! Just as I surmised, it sounds good on paper only. The write-up for the Victim's Assistance unit is very similar to the one for Greece's phony Neighborhood Watch Groups. I hear GPD had to do a LOT of DEEP digging to come up with the names of the old-timers who used to participate in our watch groups so Greece wouldn't look ridiculous compared to Ogden and Gates at that phony picnic in the park last week.

Anonymous said...

How can GPD have 'victim's assistance' when they had guys like Pignato making more victims?

Anonymous said...

A Victim Assistance Unit should be a priority
for Baxter. ROD has had a longstanding,
adequately equipped VA Unit that has been
functioning at least since the days of
Duffy being Chief.
