Has Auberger Given Baxter A Blank Check?

In the months since Chief Todd took the reins of the Greece PD, he's told various audiences how grateful he is that Supervisor Auberger has given him everything he's asked for. There have been a multitude of promotions, presumably accompanied by increases in pay, as Baxter builds a command structure. Quite a number of new hires have arrived and more are on their way. My understanding is that he is going beyond replacing those who fled the scene or were fired and expanding the number of cops Greece employs. OK, fine, I can accept that. However, the list of budget items appears to be growing.

New website? CHECK! New cars? CHECK! New equipment? CHECK! Increased patrols @ Barnard Carnival, Dewey/Stone/Northgate areas, etc? CHECK! Code enforcement work? CHECK! Boy Scout Explorer's group? CHECK! Participation in National Night Out Against Crime? CHECK! Police Athletic League picnic? CHECK! Citizen's Police Academy picnic? CHECK! Planning/participation in the extravaganza in Greece Canal Park Sept. 24th? CHECK! Plans for a future "Teen Citizen's Police Academy?" CHECK! The list goes on and on and on!

The question becomes, how much is all of this costing us (a bundle!) and where is this going to stop? Are all of these items necessary? NO!

These are supposed to be hard times economically and we just spent (wasted?) $1 million to save Auberger's backside from the likes of the "evil" Merritt Rahn and his bunch of Keystone Cop pals. To toss a bunch of social activity bills in our direction on top of rebuilding a PD we can rely upon only adds insult to severe injury!

I'm all for having a reliable, trustworthy PD but let's do it with a healthy dose of respect towards the taxpayers. Enough is enough already. IT'S TIME TO DRAW THE LINE SUPERVISOR AUBERGER! Create a PD budget and make Chief Todd live within it.

Couldn't some well formulated FOIL requests get to the heart of the matter

To 11:37PM ~~ GO FOR IT! Possibly it would tell us how much has already been spent. It won't give us anything valid to compare it to, since Rahn's regime was asleep at the wheel. I doubt that you'll get the cost for the picnics, Boy Scouts, PAL, etc. Surprise me ;)

The town is on pace to bring the police department "sworn personnel" numbers back to where they were in the late 80's, early 90's. For one reason or another, the PD has been operating far below their "authorized strength" since Merritt came aboard.

To 1:06PM ~~ My understanding is that Auberger budgeted for around 94 sworn personnel, but kept the number actually employed much lower. It provides for some room to "fiddle the figures" in the budget ;) I've heard but haven't confirmed that Baxter will be overseeing more than 100 employees soon. Where and what shifts will these cops be used?

Under Rahn Auberger used the safe city designation to justfy less staff. But Rahn was always saying Greece was a big town and we can't cover everything with our staff.

I guess they felt Tim Horton's needs more protection now.

To 3:49PM ~~ Just to be clear, justifying less staff while retaining the budget for more staff is nothing but a lie.

I agree with your 3:53 post just pointing out that in the past a differnt and deceptinve ratinale was used.

At least the money is benefiting the community and it is clear they are trying to bring the department up to speed. I look around and see the town looking like the city more and more every day. We should have had more cops 10 years ago, where we got burned is the investigation and some of these promotions.

To 10:28PM ~~ Some of these things benefit the community. Picnics, Explorer groups, etc. benefit the few, but still cost us money.

Would it "benefit the community" and therefore be OK by you to give the teachers 10% salary increases then?

I support the chief 100%.

I'll reevaluate after a year end and one year review.

To 4:10AM ~~ Once things become "routine" it's very hard to get them out of a budget around here. Enjoy your tax bill.

I would rather pay for some more cops on the street than to face the alternative of a less safe community. A good start would be bringing back the k-9 units. The riff-raff do not like the dogs.

To 9:51AM ~~ I've got no problem with having more cops on the street than we had before. The question becomes, how many are enough? Are they being spread throughout town?

I'm questioning things like all of these "social activities," the new car for the chief, etc. etc. They add up and Auberger hasn't even answered the question about how he will pay to finance Loszynski's recommendations in the future.

Baxter needs to be careful that he doesn't overextend himself or the pd. His gung-ho attitude will take a toll sooner or later with burnout. He can't be all things to all people. I give him credit for jumping into the fire and staying the course. But at some point, he's got to decide on which things are niceties vs which are community needs. Partys in the park cost money no one has these days. Scratch them and use the time and resources in ways that help the masses.

Clearly you people are not happy with some one who seams to have the best interest of the town in mind. Honestly, hot dogs and picnics won't be the demise of the town. If we are to critical over bs we should bring Merit and the gang back

To 10:27PM ~~ People like you help ensure our taxes will keep rising faster than we can earn the money to pay the bill.

It seams like people like you have all the answers, why don't you run for office. Better yet, I would like to know how you have contributed to our town to help clean up this mess. Not counting hiding behind the blog???????
