Re: Greece Central's Grades 3-8 2010 Test Results

MATH ~% Students NOT Meeting Standards:
Grade 3 Math 31.1%
Grade 4 Math 29.2%
Grade 5 Math 27.4%
Grade 6 Math 35.5%
Grade 7 Math 29.9%
Grade 8 Math 38.5%
Notes: NYS wants all school districts to have 90% of the students at Level 3 Math or higher.
I have no way to easily compare Greece Central's results to other school districts.
I have no way to easily compare Greece's new test adjusted results to the former test results.
Roughly one third of Greece Central's students in grades 3-8 are NOT meeting Level 3 standard.

ELA ~ % Students NOT Meeting Standards:

Grade 3 ELA 40.5%
Grade 4 ELA 40.5%
Grade 5 ELA 48.3%
Grade 6 ELA 42.4%
Grade 7 ELA 48.3%
Grade 8 ELA 46.7%

Notes:
NYS wants all school districts to have 90% of the students at Level 3 ELA or higher.
I have no way to easily compare Greece Central's results to other school districts.
I have no way to easily compare Greece's new test adjusted results to the former test results.
In grades 5, 7 and 8 roughly 50% of Greece Central's students are NOT meeting Level 3 standards.
In grades 3, 4 and 6 roughly 40% of Greece Central's students are NOT meeting Level 3 standards.

The surprise for me is the high percentage of Greece students not meeting NYS in ELA. Roughly 15% more students are NOT meeting standards in ELA over the Math results.

Summary:
Roughly 33% of Greece Central's students in grades 3-8 are NOT meeting Level 3 results.
Roughly 45% of Greece Central's students in grades 3-8 are NOT meeting Level 3 results.

The crime againist Greece Central's students continues.

What is ELA?

Doug.............and let us not forget that many school districts including ours have lowered the passing grade for high school Regents exams to 55%! When we were in school you had to have a 70% or higher to get credit for passing a Regents exam.

While the Commissioner has made testing standards more stringent, there is no way in hell with the money we spend in Greece to have 40% of our elementary students NOT meeting standards in ELA. Nor should we have roughly 35% of our elementary students NOT meeting standards in Math.

This is educational malpractice staring us right in the face.

Thanks to Doug for the stats as a whole. It seems to be social promotion and creative grading is not really in the best interest of the kids.

As I have posted before, my child gets A's in ELA and Math yet scores high 2's and once a 3 on the state tests. And when I question as a parent how the grades are possible I am net with resistance and in a few cases hostility.

To 4:47AM ~~ ELA is English Language Arts.

To 7:09AM ~~ As I've stated previously, grades have ALMOST NOTHING TO DO WITH what your child knows. They represent what they have done ... homework, class participation, projects, etc. If you want to nearly guarantee your child gets a higher grade next quarter, ask the teacher: "What does Susie need to do to raise her grade from a C to a B next time?" and listen closely. The answer will have little to do with learning curriculum ;)

And the administration and school boards reaction has been raises for everybody

To 7:46AM ~~ In all fairness, the BOE & Supt. also decided to raise everyone else's class size and to spend $$ on a Family Support Center over at least the next three years in order to "save" West Ridge from closing ;)

Did they get that extra Kindergarten filled yet? No? How predictable!

Anne

Based on this am D&C I can do a detailed comparison with other school districts, with the new scoring system.
A quick summary:

Greece is still SECOND from the bottom in ELA. This is again terrible!!!

Greece is SEVENTH from the bottom in Math. This is really a gain for Greece. This is the highest for Greece in years. For years Greece had that new math program, threw it out last year and implemented a different program this year.

It is amazing for Greece to go from bottom in math to seventh from the bottom.

Enjoy

Johnny: But Mr. Jones, I don't think I deserve this "F."

Mr. Jones: I know, Johnny, but unfortunately that's the lowest grade I'm allowed to give you."
