BOE & District Goals ...

Next Tuesday, the Greece school board will be meeting to formulate goals for themselves and for the school district. With new leadership in place, this might be the time to make some thoughtful and creative suggestions and have your ideas heard. What goals should the Greece BOE have? What goals should Greece Central have? Should we dump "Student learning is the goal"?

Scats, great idea! How about to start the discussion we use the ones sent in on another thread?

1. Improve four-year graduation rates to 90% by 2014
2. Close two school buildings by 2013
3. Increase student performance on 8th grade standardized state tests for English and Math to XXXX, by 2012
4. Decrease the drop-out rate to XXXX by 2013.
5. Increase the percentage of students taking AP courses to YYYY by 2012
6. Increase the percentage of students getting grades of XXX or YYY on AP course final exams by 2012

More discussion is needed!

To 10:53AM ~~ It works for me! Personally, I'd like to see specific written and measurable objectives for each subject at each grade level. It would streamline teaching/learning so that parents would know where their child is in relation to others in the class and the district could focus resources to help students with just the specific areas where they may be falling behind.

Looks like you have some picture updating to do. Where are the pictures of Frank and Julia, as well as this new clown they have from Pittsford?

The annual report card from the state at

https://www.nystart.gov/publicweb-rc/2009/6c/AOR-2009-260501060000.pdf

shows performance in Math and English from grade 3 thru 8 and science in grade 4 and 8. It also shows se3condary level English and Math scores. Those test results could be used to monitor progress from year to year and to compare with other districts (to check on degree of difficulty of individual year's tests and to compare on our standing in county)
The numbers in a goal would need to be pulled out of the individual report cards for each district, and they are always a year late in publishing, but the data (or the raw numbers) could be used as metrics for goal setting.

10;53 great idea.
The new super will know up front what will be expected and the new super's contract can reflect the progress on these goals.
Wait a minute "a contract with educational goals" ?????

To 1:52PM ~~ I have been working on it. I was hoping there would be some new pics of the BOE officers to use. That is not the case so far, at least. As far as O'Rourke is concerned, I'm not feeling the need to post his mug ... yet ;)

By the way, why are you calling him names? He's not even landed in DO yet!

To 3:04PM ~~ Reading your comment reminds me of Martin Luther King Jr's. "Ive got a dream" speech!

The boards #1 goal is to build TRUST in the community.
Like it or not the majority of the board gave the finger to the vote of the community at budget time. Don't expect the community to forget that violation overnight.

If you are going to set meaningfull goals - mean it. No room for phony - mean it.

A true indicator will be upcoming contracts and wheather contracts show 'benefit to the district' as indicated in the Comptrollers report. So far that has not happened.

ps; 'student learning is our goal' - sure would like to hear from someone what that means and how that is measured.
THAT readers is as good a definition of 'phony' i can think of.

I have a feeling we will wish Steve didn't retire when O'Rourke comes. Just ask folks in his previous district.

To 6:43PM ~~ I think what he does will largely be up to what the BOE permits him to do. He's here temporarily, I hope.

Quality Education for Today and Tomorrow

To 6:37AM ~~ The only problem with your idea is in defining what constitutes "quality." Definition will be an issue in almost any short statement. I prefer something simple like "Graduation is the goal" but I realize the limitations of such a short statement. Maybe something more specific could be "Graduating in 13 years and prepared for a lifetime."
