Where Things Stand With GCSD's Budget

Greece Teachers Assn. ~~ Their Give-A-Damn Is Broken! They steadfastly refuse to help out in the form of a wage/benefits freeze ... or in any other way for that matter.

Teamsters, GUSS, AGCEP ~~ They've stepped up and offered various concessions. HOORAY!

Supt. Steve Achramovitch ~~ He's floundering in shark infested waters pleading for the BOE to just give him "some direction." The problem is, the sharks in the water are the BOE! If the Supt. does anything meaningful, they immediately bully him back into passivity.

The BOE ~~ If you were to look up the definition of "Passive-Aggressive" in a psychology text, you'd see their photo, an
8 x 10 color glossy! They are "stuck" with their overwhelmingly sad feelings about causing any angst in various community sectors as they search for places to save money, but they still MUST get a $195 million budget brought under control. The Supt. can't help them because they won't let him cause any pain. If he tries, they smack him. They know that the cuts they MUST make will cause an outcry among teachers, other employees, parents, students ... so they do nothing for yet another week. They simply can't stand hearing about the negative impact of doing the job they were elected to do. On the other hand, if they try to raise taxes by 8-9%, they will be sitting in the midst of a community furor that they alone created. What to do? What to do? What to do? So ... the nail-biting continues.

Scats; you nailed it, trying to fix the problem that THEY THEMSELVES created.
If THEY put forth a budget increase without getting rid of the insane bussing costs associated with signature schools, open enrollment, and schools of choice by incresing my kids class size I hope the community drives their budget right down their throught.

The Supt is begging for direction from the BOE...Doesn't that speak to the quality of the goals the Board has set? Goals should be set that have clarity and quantitative measures that allow anyone to determine if the goals are met. When the goals are vague, they are open to interpretation. One member thinks they are fully met, another could be unimpressed. The BOE needs how to set meaningful goals for the Supt that reflect and support their own goals for the district- improved graduation rates, decreased drop-out rates, improved test scores on the standardized tests.
I hope the BOE learns from this plea before the interviews start for the next puppet, er I mean Superintendent.

To 12:05PM ~~ I agree 100%!!

To 12:57PM ~~ I don't think it ever occured to most on our BOE that they would EVER have to do anything that might cast them in any light short of that of a "HERO." Therein lies the troubles. Their underlying "goal" is to always be the nice guy. It's not possible and they hate it, now that they see what must be done and the uproar it will cause. Because they have rewarded groups like the sportsboosters and the West Ridge parents for going after the Supt. in the past, they are SCARED TO DEATH to face groups who want THEIR blood. Julia knows this. She as much as said it last night.

SCATS

Headlines in this am paper, the Press Journal, in Indian River County School District, in Florida, is as follows:

"SUPERINTENDENT RECOMMENDS CLOSING THOMPSON MAGENT SCHOOL"

Now isn't that a novel idea. A school supt. taking a leadership position.

Close a school to save money. Is there a Greece application? Of course: West Ridge and or Parkland could be CLOSED starting in Sept. 2010. Students would still get an equally good education in their neighborhood school and the school district gets a big savings.

Next topic, could Odyssey be closed in Sept. 2010? Of course it could. There is space in the remaining three middle schools and three high schools.

The elementary school-of-choice program could end in Sept. 2010. Big savings in transportation cost.

Will any of the above closings take place? Of course NOT. Programs will be cut. Teachers will be cut. Class sizes will be larger. Support staff will be cut.

School-of-choice will be saved for the few and again the majority will be put at a disadvantage.

Sincerely

Doug Skeet

Doug ~~ Your comments are completely on point. Don't forget that when our Supt. took the "baby step" of trying to discontinue K at WR he was smacked upside the head by our gutless school board.

The end result will be "it's the state's fault"
That's the bottom line it's always someone "elses" fault.
The Greece school board is rapidly handleing business just like the city school board = please PLEASE Mr. Govenor, PLEASE Mr. Roebach, PLEASE Mr. Reilich come bail us out.

To 5:40PM ~~ The school board's problem is they try to start with the budget we already have in place and backtrack. It doesn't work very well. Have you ever heard of a financial advisor telling people who are in debt to start where they are and build a monthly budget? No? I didn't think so. It's not the way out of a bad financial situation.

What they really need to do is BUILD A BUDGET from the ground up, starting with the basics ~ the MUST HAVES.

The school boards problem is that they all have personnel agendas, and could care less about the children of the district unless they are their own. I have never seen such a group of want to be(and one used to be) politicos in my life.

Anyone see the administrative cuts in the budget proposal (or the lack there of)?

The problem with our school board is they want to be "loved". They do not have the courage to make hard decisions like closing schools, eliminating the schools of the chosen, cutting transportation and laying off people. These are tough times and it calls for hard choices and decisions by the board and it just ain't gonna happen. Being a school board member requires hard work and these folks could care less. Just want the "love" to flow.

To 1:36AM ~~ There are some "administrative" cuts or proposed cuts. Since I missed the first half of the BOE meeting Tuesday night, I don't know if the BOE tossed them out, kept them revised them, etc. Keep in mind that there is no bigger group than GTA, so without some cuts coming from them, everything else pales in comparison.

To 6:24AM ~~ Your comments are exactly what I was trying to convey with this BLOG. They are such a bunch of wusses that I can't help but think that most of them fall into that bad parenting group we hear so much about. They probably let their children run their homes, marriages and finances because they don't have the guts to say "No!"

ALL Greece employees - especially teachers - need to take a 10-20% pay cut IMMEDIATELY - like so many of us have done in the last year.

The funding of pensions by the town MUST stop!!! People must fund their own retirement.

I guarantee these two moves would solve a myriad of budget woes.

But they don't live in the real world like the rest of us.

My vote... no to cutting school counselors! Really in light all that has happened in GCSD? We need our school counselors!!!!!

AGCEPT has not offered concessions. Where did your information come from?

The administrative cuts are 1 athletic director (we only need one for the district) How many are there? Also, 5-6 administrative assistants (ie secretaries and clerks)

To 5:39 ~~ I listened to the meeting Tuesday night from about 8PM until the end. They were putting pressure on GTA to do SOMETHING ... ANYTHING. As part of that, several unions were mentioned by name for having stepped forward already. If I misinterpreted the meaning of that, I apologize!

Does anyone have any idea how much cutting schools of choice and returning to neighborhood schools would actually save? I just wondered if there were numbers out there. Thanks...

SCATS said...

To 6:06PM ~~ That IS the $20 million question! I'm sure there are numbers, but I doubt they are "out here." :(

When I grow up I want to be a school board member. I hate to take responsibility!

5:39 - the acronym is AGCEP no "t" at the end. Must be you're a card carrying member.
