Budget Busters: Stipends & Coaching Fees

At the November 10th BOE meeting, the Board of Education approved the expenditure of $29,000+ for stipends for extracurricular activities and the expenditure of $54,000+ in coaching fees! These costs do NOT include expenses like transportation or equipment and supplies required to offer various sports and activities.

THE BOE APPROVES ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR THESE POSITIONS NEARLY EVERY MONTH!

Thats not a surprise in Greece. They spend the money on sports and paid conferences for the staff, and nothing on the education of the students. The rest of the money goes to raises for the administration. Same as it ever was.......

To 2:57PM ~~ I agree that it's not a surprise they are doing it. What might be surprising is the extent to which they are doing it. It's grown astronomically in dollar amounts the last 10 yrs. and continues to do so.

Complete arrogance in the face of our stagnant dismal economy. Why? Because they can. They will continue to spend on these luxuries in a way that our households cannot until they are stopped by voting them out...unlikely...or voting no on the budget until we are at the state level where there is a limit. Don't know what that is now but there is a limit beyond even the few restrictions we have in a contingency/austerity budget. It puts a ceiling on the spending if we have a no vote or 2 no votes. it is a substantial limit and holds them to the previous years spending. They don't want the public to know this because maybe we would vote no.
Recently in Irondequoit town (senior center) and the West Irondequoit schools (some silliness) there were 2 consecutive NO votes and the town and district had to live with it. Maybe the climate is changing.

I believe the stipends which include anything EXTRA our "professional" teachers do outside of their 6 hour day is a part of their UNION contract. They get paid addional "stipends" for helping little Johnny get on the bus and that gay club at Odyssey. This is a direct result of the school board.

To 6:30AM ~~ I agree they cover the "extras" but my point is that no one is monitoring what all of these extras include! In the past it was things like Chess Club and Yearbook. Now it's a MULTITUDE of new "positions" for school musicals (positions that did NOT exist for pay until recently!), "Recycling" or "Green" Clubs and activities with titles that don't tell me what they do. There needs to be a per building cap on these funds!

God forbid any type of sports cuts! It is always class size increase, busing disdance increase or curriculm that gets cut. Must be sports is mandated by the NYSED.
