SCATS Endorses Shannon O'Keefe For Ward 1

This was a very tough choice. In the end, Karen Lee-Byfield has been MIA on too many occasions during the campaign for my taste. She can't send stand-ins to meetings. Also, I do believe in the need for a two-party system with representation of both sides. For those reasons, and because I'm hopeful for the future, I'm endorsing Shannon O'Keefe.

O'Keefe's tenure on Town Board has been brief. During those few months since her appointment, she appears to be very comfortable sitting quietly until it is time to follow her script on that night's agenda ... and then she casts her "Aye" vote. She is a lawyer, so I'm convinced she does have a voice. I am praying she will begin to use it by asking questions, bringing discussion into the meetings and working to represent her constituents. If she doesn't, who will? At least she shows up for the job.

By the way, I'm well aware of her track record in prosecuting the infamous BOE meeting room "whisperer" ... I don't approve of it BUT I have seen no evidence to suggest she was doing anything but her job. Prosecutors (ADAs) prosecute. Just as Parrinello defends some clients we feel are undeserving, he is doing his job as a defense attorney.

Scats I guess you can no longer be pinned a Democaratic ONLY Blog :)...seems bi-partisan to me and as always good points to reflect on. Cheers to Change on November 3,2009!

Prosecutors usually bring a case to trial if they feel that a law has been broken. What was the charge against that citizen at the public meeting? Was he 'disturbing the peace" or was he accused of "trespassing"? It was up to the DA to bring this to trial or to say there was not a crime committed at all. The judge was highly dismayed that this case came to trial in the first place. She (the recent appointed 1st ward incumbent) was a stooge for the school district and Phelan who left her high and dry when he chickened out on testifying. I was there. She was incompetent. Vote for change.

To 12:02PM ~~ Doesn't the DA (and/or Grand Jury which wasn't a factor here) decide if a case is going to be prosecuted? Does an ADA have the ability to turn down a case assignment without jeopardizing their job?

Thank you for pointing out that I was remiss in not stating that the judge halted the silly charge ... sadly that was after much expense and stress to the victim, a resident/taxpayer who dared attend an open meeting.

Glad I don't live in the first ward because this is a tough call as to who to vote for.

Byfield has been m.i.a. a lot, hasn't she? How strong is her commitment? Taking a vacation right before election seems odd.

Would O'Keefe act differently without Auberger's influence (who ran his camp like the Gestapo)?

lee-Byfield may have a job that keeps her busy. She stopped by our house as she was walking the neighborhood with other candidates at the beginning of the campaign and introduced herself. I had never met her before but was impressed with her commitment. We will vote for her and I hope that she wins. The other candidate has not stopped by or left fliers at our house although she has sent out the big mailings so she must have the republican party funds behind her. We are voting for lee byfield for change and for a very good candidate in our ward.

No way SCATS was endorsing Byfield. She's on vacation right now and blew off two community events to do so. Byfield clearly doesn't want to win or doesn't care about the people.

Good pick for a candidate Dan!

To 3:26PM ~~ I'm not sure that your remarks are fair. How long has her vacation been planned? Maybe for a long time. Blaming Maloney is dysfunctional on your part. Byfield stepped forward to run. Any shortcomings on her part can't be pinned to anyone but HER.

My family is planning a rare vacation in summer 2010. We were just discussing the savings for this trip and that nearer to the end of this year the final plans. Maybe she had planned this trip way before the democrats were providing the usual sacrificial lambs to the nomination slaughter. You all have to agree that anyone who ran as a democrat in greece in the last 30 years has been a token candidate since they had as much chance of winning as a republican could win the mayoral race in Rochester. This year it is different and the democrats have more than a chance of winning. So there may be some surprised candidates that volunteered to run for the democrats and will win a seat. That is very good. But don't fault her on going on a planned vacation and not canceling it because the republicans were finally caught with their pants down and their hands in the cookie jar and their ties caught in the shredder.

To 5:37PM ~~ This really was a tough call for me. I have said all along that I do not support one party rule. Byfield has been absent from all appearances that were in my awareness, going back to the "Clean Sweep" video made in front of Town Hall. There was a stand-in used for that, too. Since the other candidates have been more visible (to me if not to others), I used her absence as the "tie-breaker" in making this specific endorsement.

IF this was a "long planned" vacation, she should have stepped up her game and made up for it with numerous other appearances before going on it!

4:10..I agree with that--should've been a more conscientious effort to make those appearances (there have been many). I sense a bit of lackluster there. I can understand the vacation plans being made well in advance, but her voice needed to be heard by more people to see her level of commitment.

But then again...politics is a crap shoot, isn't it? Whichever way it goes, let's hope it works out well for the 1st ward.
