Shame On Odyssey's PTSA!!

Odyssey PTSA Begins Fundraiser
(from GCSD website)
"Over the past few years the Odyssey Academy PTSA has run a deficit budget to spend-down an unnecessarily large treasury. This year we must return to a balanced, sustainable plan. We either have to increase revenues through fundraisers and membership dues or cut funding of programs and activities. Last year about $10,000 went to programs including: Natural Helpers ($2300), purchase of blank books ($1200), class and staff celebrations ($2500), music and arts and other course enrichment efforts ($3300)."

SCATS ~~  If you had an unnecessarily large treasury, then you ripped-off the many families that raised that money but exited the school BEFORE you spent it. This is not a new practice in GCSD. I saw it years ago when a PTA invested its "unnecessarily large treasury" in CDs from one year to the next. Odyssey parents: Demand accountability from your PTA Officers!

PTSAs have been playing shell games with funds for decades. There is no accountability. They ignore the group's bylaws in Greece and do as they please. No one complains. It's sacrilege to say anything. The parents will continue to act like robots, taking brochures to work and family gatherings, selling to anyone willing to open their wallet. Money is what its all about. They say its for the kids but its really for their own ego boost. What mom doesn't like knowing she was the top sales person for a fundraiser? And her kid gets the benefits.

To 9:57AM ~~ In my mind it's just plain WRONG to raise money using one group of parents and kids, but then "save" it and use it when the people who raised it get little or no benefit from their hard work.

I'm not holding my breath that anyone will take this errant group to task. They just had their annual indoctrination and dinner with the BOE last night. Everyone drank the Kool-aid.

National PTA discourages this carry over of funds but does not dictate what they do in individual units. The only organization that oversees is the ny state Bureau of charities which requires that they report to yearly. PTA units are not supposed to raise funds more than what is needed to do the PTA activities of the unit that year ...bring in speakers , have meetings, refreshments, attend conferences and conventions. . What is really happening is that the PTA's are using their tax exempt status and insurance to have fund raisers for the schools to buy items and services that should be provided by the school district budget. There is no way to stop this because that is how the school district wants it and the parents involved love the activity. It is their socialization.
Odyssey is no different from any of the suburban PTA's in Monroe county and the state.

There is also the expenses of any organization like office supplies, cards, stamps, etc. If the PTA would stick to their mission which is child and educational advocacy they wouldn't have the time to do the fundraising. But if they complained to the school administrators then there would be trouble. So they are just a funraising organization like the music and sports boosters.
Think about all the levels of fund raisers at the schools...sports, pta, scouts, music trips, grade level trips, music boosters, each graduating class at each high school has a separate fund and tax exempt number, national honor society, the foundation for the arts at Athena Middle, show choir at Atnena. Anymore? Are there any fund raisers for math clubs?

To 10:56AM ~~ I've never heard of fundraisers for any of the strictly academic clubs, like Math team. Also, I can't recall hearing about PTAs spending any significant amounts on office supplies. I am of the understanding that they have access to the school's copiers, etc.

With money like that why did not the PTSA purchase a box of kleenex for every child in attendence and then they all would get the 10 bonus points...oops that would work at ATMS maybe not OA.

To 12:40PM ~~ You make an excellent point! In fact, I think this shows the PTAs aren't really there "for the kids." They are their to toot their own horns and gain some political leverage to blackmail the BOE at budget time ... i.e. whining about anything that might get cut.

And any of that whining is orchestrated and choreographed. The top down method of concern and complaining. Word gets out that some program is in jeopardy usually through staff channels and it is funneled to the PTA council and then to the unit presidents. Then the outcry begins with speakers at board meetings and phone calls.
If a parent comes to the PTA at the school level with a problem it goes into the circular file. Also the parent is noted as a troublemaker. There are no concerns brought to the administration from the parent through PTA.
And heaven forbid that a parent goes directly to a board meeting and speaks. Whoa they are ushered out of that meeting and sequestered until a "solution" can be found which usually shuts up the parent through bribery or intimidation. Or in the case of board members on transportation committees that get elected and become mute rubberstamps with kiddies accepted at Pinebrook or Westridge.
