Should GCSD Outsource More To Save Money?

Which areas would result in the biggest cost savings?

Bussing
Print Shop
Payroll
Other areas?

The problem with the district doing their own study or comparison regarding outsourcing in house services is that the district NEVER finds it is more cost effective to outsource ANYTHING. I have seen this time and again for over 25 years. It is not about saving taxpayers money or delivering services mor effectivly. It is about job prservation. Period. We have not had any true job layoffs in 25 years. Likewise for the vast majority of other school districts in this state. Which is why we spend over $15,000 per kid in NYS and are the highest taxed residents in the nation. 8/01/2009 5:53 AM

The bussing, print shop and payroll should all be outsourced but the unions will never let it happen. The unions enjoy (on our dime by the way) great medical benefits with very low co-pays by the employees and great retirement benefits by the state (on our dime too) with automatic COLA increases yearly.

And of course OUR union bus drivers take better care of the kids than if we outsourced our bussing. That is according the the district and the PTA goody two shoes woman who whip the parents into a frenzy at the mere whispher of contracting out all our bussing

If they outsourced the bussing, a manager in the prite business that took over wouldn't know whether to laugh or to cry. "51 square miles, and they let the kids pick any school they want! Business is good, but these people are freakin' nuts!"

Hiring competent managers would solve the problem. Just like any other large organization there is alot of dead wood in the entire district that should be pruned out of the tree.As far as bussing, neighborhood schools would result in a savings of probably as much as 50% of the transportation budget.
Out sourcing will only result in more waste. The district just needs some experienced managers who are not afraid to clean house.

What about outsourcing the district's food service operations? It might even improve the quality (it would be hard for it to get any worse!).

You are absolutly right.
First and formost is the need for a "leader".
2nd keep the school board out of it - all they will do is appoint a committe which means "nothing" would get done.

I agree with 7:15, but I would also say that until you have someone at the top of the tree (the Supt.) who will support the competent managers recommendations, nothing will change. I used to work in Greece. I can tell you that there were many times that "line managers" would provide recommendations for reduction of services, personnel, etc. only to be rebuffed by "higher ups" because the moves were too politically risky. There is a problem in District Office; of that there is no doubt. AND, I agree that it is HEAVILY overstaffed. Until the Supt. changes, nothing else will change. Just my two cents.

Outsourcing is not the ideal solution to our problems. Look how great it has worked for the American economy. We are becoming a third world nation thanks to lowering wages and cutting of social programs that all the other Western nations see as vital.

Rather than jumping on the unions for getting benefits for workers we ought to pat them on the back for getting workers their fair share. Let's also ask why workers are asked to bear the brunt of our problems when the blame lies elsewhere Management skates scott free.
If everyone has low wages and no resources then the tax rate will go even higher and impose more burdens because the base is so low. To support a school system the way we want we need a social fabric (including public employees) who are making decent living wages. We are trending in the other direction

All people should have good health care decent retirement.etc.
What is wrong with some of you?

10:01 What is "wrong" with me is that the kind of people you say we need have milked MY WALLET dry! I have no health care. I have next to no vacation. I barely eke out a living. But hey, whatever I have left over certainly ought to go into YOUR POCKET!!!!

When was the last time you took a pay cut or no raise at all?

Please show me workers other than those paid by the taxpayers who are getting 90% of thier health care paid for.
And how about as one board member talked about how they don't even have to go to work and they get a raise.
This is crazy - where do people like you think the money is going to come from?

To 10:01AM........And just which UNION do YOU belong to??? Give me a freakin break. We are not talking about outsourcing services to CHINA. Just to local companies that don't live off of our DIME and actually CARE about their bottom line or they go out of business. This is something school districts and other municipalities are clueless about. Which is why we are the highest taxed people in the freakin NATION.
