Good for Joe
Why did they not endorse Jo Meleca Voight?
What about Dan Maloney?

Are we suppost to be impressed with an endorcement from someone who lives in another town (east side).
Why would Joe want the endorsement from such a self centered group.

10:37 is Just another union basher.Ho Hum

I see Auberger is taking that tact too. Shame on him.

Personally I'd be proud to have the teacher's union endorse me.

Does the fact that Joe got a letter neccesarily mean that Meleca Voight and Maloney didn't? Where is the snub?

To 12:54PM ~~ If you look at each of the Democrat candidate's web pages, you will see that each person has a page for posting the endorsements they receive. Joe posted a letter of endorsement he received that was signed by the head of the Greece Teachers Assn.

In contrast, Jo's page shows quite a number of endorsements, but none from HER OWN UNION. I didn't realize at the time I wrote the BLOG, but they also failed to endorse a second Greece teacher, Karl Nielson.

I don't know why you are bringing Maloney up in this discussion since the point is that GTA has chosen NOT TO ENDORSE two candidates that are part of their own rank & file. I find that to be very odd.

Really?! Being a good teacher is equal to being a good political candidate?

SCATS said...

To 2:17PM ~~ GTA expects its members to be loyal to the union. It's not a two-way street?

Anonymous said...

SCATS, please be advised that teachers are much smarter than that. Loyalty is earned, not automatic.

SCATS said...

To 5:01PM ~~ If you pay your dues monthly, I think you've demonstrated loyalty ;)

It's a closed-shop. Dues are not a choice! It's the law.
The only portion of dues you don't have to pay are those earmarked for political action.

To 7:49PM ~~ Anyone who belongs to GTA has a voice for changing the way they do business. Please don't play victim.

The letter was a letter from Don. It is not an endorsement by GTA. Don took it upon himself to use the letterhead to write his personal letter. GTA has not met Don cannot endorse a candidate without the reps voting on it. As usual Don has overstepped. Most teachers would not endorse Joe.

Who does Don Polozzi think he is and as an earlier posting said he doesn't even live here which makes his credibility questionable as to his knowledge of whats going on in Greece.
I find this endorsement confussing.

Scats, please look up the law regarding "agency shop fees."

SCATS said...

To 9:27PM ~~ Here's what I found:

"THE AGENCY shop fee is a device used by many American labor unions to ensure that they receive appropriate financial support from the workers they represent. As
collective negotiating representatives, unions
win benefits that by their very nature ordinarily cannot be withheld from any particu
lar worker in the group represented ( Olson
1965 :66-67). Moreover, most labor laws impose duties of fair representation that pro
hibit unions from discriminating among workers; thus, unions are unable to limit the benefits they obtain for a bargaining unit to
union supporters... "

To 9:10PM ~~ What I find confusing is the fact that the union head Palozzi endorsed one candidate (Joe) while overlooking endorsing two other candidates from his own union. And FYI, MANY Greece teachers don't live in Greece, but that has never kept their union from being politically active in Greece.

Agency shop is for appointees who do not have to take a civil service exam, but because of their employment in the public sector, pay "agency shop fees" to the union for the benefits that they are provided, including retirement, dental, vision, prescription, etc.

Again, I thought the word union and anything about unions was not allowed to be mentioned on this site.

As an aside, I didn't see anything in 10:37's comment that warranted 12:02 attacking him/her and labeling the person as a union basher.

Is 12:02 an overly sensitive member of a union? Possibly.

SCATS said...

To 11:08PM ~~ Once again, you thought wrong. Bringing up the word "union" out of left field merely because you like the way it sounds or looks in print isn't advisable. This particular BLOG is about a specific union ~~ The Greece Teacher's Assn. and their endorsement of one candidate but their failure to endorse two others who are part of their membership.

This may be a good time to remind taxpayers that it is 'they' who paid for this endorcement letter for it is 'they' the taxpayers who are forking out over $100,000 per year via the 'contract' for people like the union leaders to do this type of 'work' while being paid by the taxpayers.

Is it possible that contracts at the town level (police union ect.) have similar clauses?

SCATS said...

To Charlie ~~ That's a good question. I assume that the PD union's contract is also available via FOIL, correct?

GTA is planning picketing before the superintendents opening day address.

SCATS said...

To 8:31PM ~~ I'm NOT surprised.

Anonymous said...

8;31

BOTH of them?

Anonymous said...

8:31 What is it the GTA is going to picket about?
This is the first I have heard of this.

SCATS said...

To 7:35AM ~~ My best guess is it's about the fact they haven't gotten a new contract yet.
