"Racism At Olympia High School"

A Student Produced Video by Davné McCleary

Notes: My video is about identifying and dealing with the racism in Olympia High, as well as everywhere else. My name is Davné McCleary. I am 14 years old and am a freshman at Greece Olympia High School. I've been doing YEPP for 2 years and I've completed 3 video pieces so far and I hope to continue in the video production field. I would like to give thanks to Mrs. Daun Nicholas, my YEPP instructor, all those who volunteered to be in my piece, and a special thanks to Ann Marie White and Shelley Figueroa for allowing my group to do this project.

SCATS ~~ Thank you to the bloggers who brought this item to our attention.

How many Black, Hispanic, Asian teachers have applied for jobs? I have a problem saying that there is discrimination because of this one person when he may have been a low quality candidate.

Anyone who believes racism isn't an issue in Greece needs to watch this video again. It should be required viewing for the boe, supt and all other district office staff.

7:44_ How could he be "a low quality candidate" for a teaching position when he seemed to be just fine while subbing? That makes no sense!

If all substitutes were high quality, they would be automatically hired. They are not all high quality. They are certified but that's all we can be sure of. That's why we interview candidates.

8:31 Are you suggesting we don't interview subs before entrusting them with our children???

Subs don't go through the same scrutiny that permanent teacher do. For subs, we know they are certified and they are fingerprinted so we know they don't have a criminal background. They are not necessarily the people we can trust to teach our kids what they need to know.

So then any students stuck with a longterm sub are probably just SOL in that subject? Nice!!! No wonder our test scores and grad rates are in the crapper.

Nice try 7:44. Obviously things aren't quite so cut and dried with the racism case. Otherwise NY State wouldn't have paved the way for the next step heading towards a lawsuit.

Good. And when they get done there, have them head down Long Pond and take a left past the intersection of Maiden Lane.

May as well clean up everything while they are here.

Praise be to Anon!

Subs do not have to be certified, they just need at least 2 years of college credit. Strange but true.

Whatever the merits of the currnet case, and the state seems to think it has some merit, race has been an issue for a longer time at Olympia and it appears several other schools. Why has our school board -- and our local media-- walked around with their heads in the sand.

Greece has been changing for some time, leaders still want to give us that ole' time religion literally and figuratively.

Are you going to pick up on the story about Christa spinning off a bunch of their crooks to start a new scam? This is done so that they can bid on multiple contracts from a single client that would otherwise be required to be placed with two separate vendors. Now Christa IS TWO separate vendors and can rip us off with the open hand and turn around and belt us with the back of their hand! Nice arrangement, huh? Where is the outrage over that, sleepyheads?

To 8:53PM ~~ Yup, I "picked up" on it :) I work MY hours, not yours ;)

I find this interesting as I was in Olympia for a few days in a row and I noticed that in the hall leading to the auditorium it is lined with ONLY African American's photos and their "quotes". The school is perpetuating the racial divide by allowing this. It is both walls and span the entire hall way.

And when a group no matter the color chooses to stand out., good or bad, it creates a separation. It is unfortunate the schools continue to support the ghetto culture as legit, it only serves to hurt those that want equallity.

Chris Sloane should be removed from Olympia HS sooner than later. She is more concerned with her flings with other admins that she fails to properly govern that building. Time to move on Chris.
