Speakers Sought To Share Experiences of Racism In GCSD With BOE

From Ms. Myra Brown in an email sent to me earlier today. Posted with her consent.

Thank you. I am planning to meet with Megan Mcdermott next week regarding this story. We are still looking for parents who live in Greece who would be willing to sign up to speak at Tuesdays board meeting to ask about the perception and experience of racism in the district especially since the John Niles story has hit the papers. We are not wanting them to put themselves or their childrens education at risk. It has to be a Greece resident who speaks and our goal is simply to have it raised as a question in the room in the presence of those of us who will be present as supporters. Do you know of anyone who would sign up to give a simple line like the one I described above. I could help them frame it in a way that seems curious as opposed to confrontational if that's helpful.

I'm not accusing folks of being racist, but racial unease is another of the dirty little secrets here in Greece. We need to put the issue in the public and something we need to address.

Greece should be a place where everyone is welcome.

It will never get better until we get rid of the PC BS that rules the schools.

There may never be a greater time to voice displeasure about the "lottery" schools than now. The discrimination case written about recently in the paper has showed me that this organization will get the attention of those in power and control. Racism relating to "lottery" schools is an UGLY allegation, and our BOE would be foolish to brush this conversation off as they have every other time the "lottery" has been brought up.

From Ms. Myra Brown in an email sent to me earlier today 5/12/09. Gotta love that Greece Democracy!

"Hi, it sounds like they are giving different info to different people when they call. Our folks were told by the same person that they give preference to Greece residents and that in fact those who sign up who live outside of Greece can be bumped for a Greece resident who signs up later. I also learned that they went from only having 3 signed up to having 6 and not letting our folks sign up again.Sounds like they make a practice in moving the goal post at will."

To Myra ~~ District Office should NOT be prohibiting anyone from signing up to speak. If some of the others on the list are no-shows, your turn would come. I would raise holy hell about this. Sadly, our thin-skinned reporter isn't terribly interested in covering real news.
